Brent Morey Testifies at State Legislative Hearing


Brent Morey, Executive Director of Community Action Development Corporation in Frederick and Past President of OKACAA, testified before the Oklahoma House of Representatives Appropriations and Budget Committee on Oct. 21 about how state appropriated funds support the efforts of Oklahoma's Community Action Agencies to provide needed services to low-income people.

Grants Awarded to OKACAA Members 
The Corporation for National and Community Service has awarded grants to two Community Action Agencies.

Delta Communication Action Foundation, Inc. was awarded more than $619,000 over three years to develop the Delta Senior Companion Program. Senior Companions will serve in southern Oklahoma to provide independent living support services to homebound clients and provide respite services for family caregivers.
Little Dixie Community Action Agency has been awarded a $177,907 School Readiness grant. Twenty-eight AmeriCorps members will serve in Little Dixie's Head Start and Early Head Start programs to assist teacher and assistant teachers in making sure students are prepared to enter kindergarten.

The Community Action Agency of Oklahoma City and Oklahoma/Canadian Counties has been awarded $75,000 by Oklahoma's Inasmuch Foundation for the Individual Development Account (IDA) Matched Savings Program for working high school students and working parents. Money accumulated in the IDA savings accounts can be used for downpayment and/or closing costs on a first home, starting or expanding a viable small business, or higher education expenses.  

MyRide One-Click/One-Call
Clearinghouse for Public Transportation


MyRide One-Click/One-Call is a new website application providing information on transportation services through the internet or by phone. Links to Community Action transit programs are accessible through the website. Launched in November, the website is a project of the Governor's Oklahoma United We Ride Council.

Bellmon Scholarship Application Available

The Bellmon Community Action Scholarship awards up to $1,500 per academic year to provide opportunities for Community Action clients, children of clients, or children of employees of Community Action Agencies to attend Oklahoma State University. Submission deadline is Feb. 1, 2016.

One in six Oklahomans lived in poverty last year with an annual income below $23,850 for a family of four. The Oklahoma Policy Institute's 2014 Poverty Profile is based on Census Bureau data and breaks down what poverty looks like in our state.

Census Bureau Releases 2014 Statistics

The U.S. Census Bureau has released the income, poverty, and health insurance statistics compiled for 2014 through the Current Population Survey.

LIHEAP Energy Assistance Funds Released

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services' Administration for Children and Families announced that over $3 billion in block grant funds have been allocated for the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) in its 2016 Initial Continuing Resolution. Oklahoma's share is $29,060,185. Tribal set-asides for the state totaled $3,996,103. The Oklahoma Department of Human Services operates the program which pays utilities for heating and cooling for eligible individuals.
