Certified Renovator Training To Be Offered

Training CenterCertified Renovator training will be provided at the Weatherization Training Center in Edmond beginning in January. The Oklahoma Department of Environmental Quality requires companies that do renovations, repair or painting on homes and child occupied facilities built before 1978 be certified by the state and have trained Certified Renovators supervising jobs that will disturb lead based paint. Certifications are good for five years. Certified Renovators must take a 4-hour refresher course before their certification expires. For more information, contact Johnny Field at 405-949-1495.

 Poverty Simulation Brings Awareness to
Plight of Low-Income Families

Poverty SimulationAbout 50 Lawton residents including the Chief of Police and the City Manager participated in a Community Action Poverty Simulation hosted by Great Plains Improvement Foundation in collaboration with the Lawton Alumnae chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority. The interactive simulation gave participants a glimpse of the struggles, frustrations and hardships that can come about as a result of someone living in poverty.

  Delta Community Action and Opportunities, Inc. Participating in Head Start Mental Health Pilot Project

 Delta Community Foundation and Opportunities, Inc. are participating in a pilot project to implement early childhood mental health consultations into Early Head Start and three-year-old classrooms. The Oklahoma Head Start Collaboration Office, in partnership with the Oklahoma Association for Infant Mental Health, is supporting the project to help teachers understand the impact of stress and trauma on young children and their families.

The Oklahoma Weatherization and Housing Advisory Council is accepting applications until Jan. 17, 2014 for the $1,000 Ted Allen/David Walker Scholarship.

Retiring Opportunities, Inc. Head Start Director
Reflects On 43 Year Career

Carol RamerWhen Carol Ramer joined the Opportunities, Inc. staff as a part-time employee over four decades ago, Head Start was just an 8-week summer program. She has seen the program blossom to where it now serves 710 children in Head Start, 72 in Early Head Start and 30 in state-funded home-based programs with about 150 staff members.

Bellmon Scholarship Applications Available 

The Bellmon Community Action Scholarship awards up to $1,500 per academic year to provide opportunities for Community Action clients, childen of clients or children of employees of Community Action Agencies to attend Oklahoma State University. Submission deadline is Feb. 1, 2014.

Oklahoma Poverty Profile 2012

The Oklahoma Policy Institute issued its Oklahoma Poverty Profile 2012 which is based on U.S. Census Bureau state level poverty data from the America Community Survey. In 2012, one out of every six Oklahomans -- some 637,429 -- lived in poverty. The number increased by 4,131 over the 2011 data.
