OKACAA  Honors Employees and Volunteers
at Annual Conference

The Oklahoma Association of Community Action Agencies honored volunteers and staff members during its annual conference. Beth Parker from Big Five Community Services received the Guy Davis Leadership Award. Little Dixie Community Action Agency Housing Director Ron Walker was presented the Fred Tucker Memorial Award. Jerri Sanders from INCA Community Services was recognized as Volunteer of the Year. The Ted Allen Memorial Award was presented to INCA Community Services Weatherization Director Dana Trent. Head Start awards were presented to Jessica Scott and Angela Vega, both from Big Five.

United Community Action Creates 'CityRide Circuit' Transit Pilot Project in Bartlesville

United Community Action Program launched a pilot program to provide a flexible, fixed transit route in Bartlesville with support from the Washington County Transportation Coalition. United's Cimarron Public Transit's CityRide Circuit makes hourly loops through the community.

  'Haunted Mortuary' Benefits Deep Fork Community Action Foundation

Deep Fork Community Action Foundation is raising money to purchase Christmas gifts for teens with the 'Haunted Mortuary' in October. The Halloween attraction features catacombs of gore and mayhem located beneath the sidewalks of Okmulgee.

Opportunities, Inc. Adds Multi-County Fire Corps, Inc.  as Agency Service

Opportunities, Inc. wants to expand resources in northwestern Oklahoma to aid families whose homes are destroyed by fire or other disasters. The agency has added the Multi-County Fire Corps, Inc. as a service.

Officers Selected

The Oklahoma Association of Community Action Agencies Board of Directors has elected new officers for a two-year term. The Oklahoma Weatherization and Housing Advisory Council and the Oklahoma Head Start Association also have elected officers to lead their groups.

Oklahoma Policy Institute Reports on Poverty

The Oklahoma Policy Institute reports the poverty in Oklahoma reached a six-year high in 2011. Citing U.S. Census Bureau, the data reveals more than one in six Oklahomans - and almost one in four children - now live in poverty.

Community Action Agencies are locally controlled non-profit organizations that work to improve the lives of low-income individuals by creating opportunities for increased self sufficiency and greater participation in the community. The Oklahoma Association of Community Action Agencies provides advocacy, information, education, and technical assistance for its members.
