St. Charles Catholic School Weekly News
January 15, 2016
St. Charles Catholic School has a long history of supporting students through religious, academic, and social emotional education. For the past 67 years parishioners have supported our school through weekly offerings and their time. Things haven't really changed. Even though the student population is less than it was in the 1970's, we continue to strive to educate the whole child and build a sense of community.

As we look ahead and begin planning for next year and the years following, we ask for your continued support of time, talent and treasure. We cannot educate your child alone. Even the smallest contribution of time or treasure keeps us viable. My most favorite saint, Saint Therese, is the originator of "The Little Way". This is the way of those who are not rich and famous, but want to serve God their loving Father through their littleness and simplicity and love.  In other words, St. Therese knew that she was not capable of great sacrifices, or of performing great and mighty works. It was little things she did to please God.

Together, if we all do one little thing, we can make a big impact. Thank you for supporting St. Charles today, and down the road.

Sincerely,
Ann Lachowitzer
Principal

Inclement Weather and School Closings
Should it become necessary to close school by reason of weather or other emergencies, all daytime events at St. Charles Borromeo Parish, including the 9:00 a.m. Mass and Eucharistic Adoration, are also cancelled. Please do not call the school or parish office to inquire about closings.  You may learn about school closing the following ways:

1)    We use an automated telephone broadcasting system to communicate School Closings to you. For snow days, the call will be launched between 5:30 - 6:30 a.m., or the night before if we know ahead of time. The Caller ID will display 816-436-1009, which is the main number for St. Charles. To receive the automated message, a phone must either be answered by a human voice or by a greeting on the receiving phone made by a human voice.  The automated system will not deliver a message to an electronic voice.

2)    An email will be sent to all email addresses on file

3)    School closing will also be announced on all major T.V. stations as St. Charles Catholic School.  The school will not close after the school day has begun; but, parents/guardians are welcome to pick up their children early if the weather is a concern.

4)    Please visit www.stcharleskcschool.weconnect.com  for the latest information about closings and cancellations.  Check back periodically for updates as more information becomes available.  You can also follow us on Facebook and Twitter for the latest.

Chargers' Care
6th, 7th and 8th grade students

St. Charles Catholic School and Youth Ministry are teaming up to bring you a
NEW after school Service Program!

First meeting:
February 1, 3:15 p.m. - 4:15 p.m., room 202
(1st & 3rd Mondays; exception in February)

What is Chargers' Care?
It is a student led club that is dedicated to providing assistance to local non-profit organizations, as they continue to feed, clothe, educate, shelter and provide aid to children and families in need.
Stewardship is an important characteristic to teach our students. This program will introduce 6th, 7th and 8th grade students to the business of philanthropy through hands on experiences and opportunities to meet the people that commit themselves to worthy causes on a daily basis. Those involved are also responsible for making intelligent decisions within the program.

Program Goals
1. Provide hands-on experience in the identification of an agency in need. Students will conduct an in-depth review of multiple organizations to understand the services provided, financial structure, staffing, facility needs, primary sources of funding, use of funds, etc.
2. Students will learn the proper balance between compassion and business savvy to provide the best possible outcome for the chosen agency.
3. Students will have the opportunities to sharpen their research and presentation skills through interactive exercises with their peers and special guests.
4. Students will develop confidence to take on a leadership role in future philanthropic endeavors and challenges.
5. Students will have the opportunity to meet people in our community who commit themselves to worthy causes on a regular basis.

How To Help With Homework

Alex and Jason come home with the same math homework.
Scenario # 1
Alex complains to his mom, "It's just not fair. Mr. Jenson gives us too much homework. I don't know how to do this. He never explains anything. You need to help me. It's going to take too long!"

"How did he explain this homework?" asks mom.

"I don't remember. You need to help me," says Alex.

Mom opens the book and points out the answers. She gets the task over quickly and then lectures, "You'd better start paying attention in class!"

Scenario # 2
Jason makes the same complaint to his mom.

"How did your teacher explain this homework?" asks mom.

"I don't remember. You need to help me," says Jason.

"How sad," answers Mom. "I'll be happy to help when you work harder on your schoolwork than me, and I know that you are listening in class." With that, she tells Jason to open his book and try to remember how the teacher told him to do the work. "You can watch your program when it's finished," she tells Jason.

Which mom did the best job of parenting?
Which kid is more likely to start listening better in class?

I bet you know the answer.
