Inclement Weather and School Closings
Should it become necessary to close school by reason of weather or other emergencies, all events at St. Charles Borromeo Parish, including the 9:00 a.m. Mass and evening events, are also cancelled. Please do not call the school or parish office to inquire about closings.  You may learn about school closing the following ways:

1)    We use an automated telephone broadcasting system to communicate School Closings to you. For snow days, the call will be launched between 5:30 - 6:30 a.m., or the night before if we know ahead of time. The Caller ID will display 816-436-1009, which is the main number for St. Charles. To receive the automated message, a phone must either be answered by a human voice or by a greeting on the receiving phone made by a human voice.  The automated system will not deliver a message to an electronic voice.

2)    An email will be sent to all email addresses on file

3)    School closing will also be announced on all major T.V. stations as St. Charles Catholic School.  The school will not close after the school day has begun; but, parents/guardians are welcome to pick up their children early if the weather is a concern.

4)    Check the school website for closing information, or twitter:

Parenting Tipsfather-child-beach.jpg
A New Year's Resolution is a desired behavior change. People make resolutions, and they quickly fail! Unsuccessful resolutions may look like:
  • I will cut out sugar from my diet.
  • I won't text and drive.
  • I will not use my credit cards.
We keep these resolutions for the first few weeks of January and then we revert to our old, unsuccessful behavior patterns. WHY?

We often try to change behaviors by focusing on what we do not want to do. That is why you can't resist stepping on the grass when you see the "Keep off grass" sign. Focusing on what you don't want actually pits your brain-body chemistry against your willpower. This undermines any chance for success. "Walk on sidewalk," is a more helpful sign.

Here are some Conscious DisciplineŽ tips for New Year's Resolution success:

1.    Pay attention to your focus. What you focus on you get more of so choose to focus on what you want to have happen or what you want TO DO. Consciously shift, "I don't want to drink soda anymore," to, "I'm going to drink a glass of water!"

2.    Replace disempowering words with words that empower you! These words give your power away and create a mindset that you are a victim of circumstances and lack choice:

a.    I need to _____.

b.    I have to _____.

c.    I should _____.

3.    Take back your power and choices by using the phrase, "I'm going to ___!" with a "Just Do It!" attitude:

a.    I'm going to save $50.00 from each paycheck!

b.    I'm going to eat an apple!

c.    I'm going to walk around the block three times!

4.    Write it down. Research suggests writing down resolutions, commitments and goals increases your chances of following through.

5.    Check in with yourself daily. Reflect on your choice to keep your resolution. When you keep your resolution, you give yourself a dose of serotonin! Serotonin is a natural joy juice that will make you want to repeat your success! Celebrate yourself with kind words and pat yourself on the back. If you made an oops, affirm, "I am safe. I am calm. Keep breathing. I can handle this." Then recommit to your resolution. If you continue to oops more than celebrate, take time to reflect. Breaking down your resolution into smaller more attainable goals may be helpful.
