St. Charles Catholic School Weekly News
November 9, 2015
Please watch your mail for an important letter from the parish regarding 2016-17 school registration. In an effort to gather data and begin planning, we are asking you to inform us of your intentions for registering your children this spring.

Parenting Tip
You better show them who's boss!
We have all heard the advice, "get control of children and get it early." Adults fear that if they do not clearly, "show them who is boss," that children will take over. These fears create anxiety as how to handle certain situations. Then adults may act out with controlling, erratic behavior. This can lead to adults coercing children, spanking children, manipulating children and using other controlling techniques. This is not safe.

Our ultimate goal is to structure situations for children and to control ourselves.

To be in control means we are consciously aware of our thoughts and feelings. When we are unaware, we become out of control and then seek to gain control of our children. This is damaging to our children.

Structure is defined as the process whereby the adult gives the children the necessary information and skills to meet the adult's expectations and meet their own needs at the same time. Structuring is a way to provide our children with emotional safety.

To successfully structure children we must consistently:
 State goals and expectations clearly
 Anticipate potential problems
Forgive ourselves when we lose control; soothe ourselves to regain control
Look to the surrounding environment for solutions
Teach children the necessary skills to meet our expectations
Remember that you are in charge
 Plan ahead
Rehearse/practice what to say and do
Give children information about what may likely happen
 Communicate procedures clearly

As always, we wish you well!
Sincerely,
Ann Lachowitzer
Principal

Chargers Hold'Em
A huge thank you to all the volunteers who helped make the event successful. We specifically thank Staci Bevan for chairing the event and Joe & Gina Robertson for cooking all the food. Thank you to our third grade teachers for helping decorate and all the teachers who attended.  While the turnout was smaller than we hoped, and only a handful of school parents showed up, everyone there had a great time.
Did you know St. Charles has a food pantry in Borromeo Hall? Each week we will feature information regarding the pantry. The students will have an opportunity to visit the pantry and learn more about what the volunteers do in the pantry. To say thank you and help support those in need, the students will be given an opportunity to donate a food item. Our fist food drive will be on November 17th. Food may be brought in on Monday or Tuesday. We hope you will consider sending in the following items per grade level:
  • Preschool, PreK, K - Boxed meals like Hamburger Helper (can be an off brand).
  • 1st & 2nd - Bags of Rice or boxed rice, flavored rice of any kind.
  • 3rd - Pancake mix and pancake syrup.
  • 4th & 5th - Canned vegetables (any kind) or canned fruit (any kind).
  • 6th - spaghetti (pasta any kind) and sauce.
  • 7th - Canned meals: chili, ravioli, tuna, Spam, chicken.
