Weekly Parenting Skill - OUR FAST PACED SOCIETY HAS ROBBED CHILDREN FROM TRULY EXPERIENCING CONSEQUENCES
Consequences are about teaching, not punishing or rescuing. We recall how parents handled it "back in the day" when a child threw a ball through the neighbor's window. Our parents would march us over to the neighbor's house and have us tell them what we had done. Then we would have to pay for the window. We didn't have a job, so in order to pay for the window, we would take on additional chores, rake yards, etc. While we did these jobs, we were missing TV time, special events with the family and playtime. The core of the learning did not come from missing the activities or suffering (though, these things weren't particularly fun); the learning came from the uncomfortable feeling we had as we walked over to the neighbor's house. In our fast paced society, we have robbed children from truly experiencing consequences because we want them to be swift and effortless for us.
DELIVERY IS KEY!
The most beneficial consequence is a natural consequence. We must stop worrying about the consequence and start focusing on how we deliver the consequence. When we deliver a consequence while emotionally charged, we give the teen a free "pass." When we are yelling and threatening, they respond by saying we are picking on them, "It's not fair, I hate you!" The consequence essentially becomes about our upset, not their behavior.
When you are calm during your delivery of a consequence, it is very difficult for the child to be angry at the message because we are generating a state of calm in them as we explain what will happen. It is imperative that we state consequences in a voice that is clear, calm and assertive, as opposed to shouting it from the mountaintop.
RESPECTFUL/REASONABLE/RELATED - THE THREE R's OF CONSEQUENCES
What happens when you, the adult, bounce a check? You pay the extra fees-natural consequence. Please give your child the gift of learning, teach and deliver natural consequences.
As always, we wish you well.

Sincerely,
Ann Lachowitzer
Principal

New Saturday Vigil Mass Time
St. Charles Borromeo Parish
Please Note Time Change: Saturday Mass to move to 4pm beginning Saturday, Nov. 7th. Last year, we surveyed parishioners at all weekend Masses regarding the consolidation of our three Sunday morning Masses into two. Based on the feedback from that survey, we consolidated the 7:30am and 9am Masses into a single 8:30am Mass, leaving the later Mass at 11am. Some feedback also indicated interest in moving the 5pm Saturday evening vigil Mass to an earlier time at 4pm. So as not to make too many changes all at once, we decided to leave the vigil Mass at its regular time. Since then, I have heard many parishioners express a positive interest in moving the Saturday vigil Mass to a 4pm time slot. The primary reason cited is the number of elderly parishioners who attend that Mass and find it difficult to drive home after Mass, particularly during the winter months when dusk comes earlier. In light of these facts, we will be changing our Saturday evening vigil Mass to 4pm effective Saturday, November 7, 2015. Additionally, Saturday evening confessions will begin at 3pm rather than the previous time of 3:30pm. If you, or a friend or loved one, has occasion to attend the vigil Mass, please take note and share this information with others who will be affected by it. Thank you for your cooperation.

Got used crayons and markers?
RECYCLE them!
Here at St. Charles we want to do our part in keeping the Earth clean and COLORFUL, so bring us your unwanted, rejected, and broken crayons and we'll send them off to be recycled into NEW crayons. We are also accepting not only Crayola markers, but any brand of dry erase markers and highlighters. These can be re-purposed by converting them into clean energy. Sounds great, right? By getting involved with this program, you'll be teaching your kids to recycle something that belongs to them. So gather up all of your used markers and crayons and send them to school with your kids. Together we can make the future of Earth BRIGHT

St. Pius X
Dear St. Charles Families,

We had the pleasure of bringing some of our students to St. Charles for a Spirit Assembly today. The St. Charles Alums that we brought with us loved being back in their grade school and seeing some of their former teachers. We hope your students enjoyed our assembly and learned a little bit about St. Pius X as well.

Our nearly 60 year history in the Northland is rich with strong academic and athletic programs. St. Pius X is a place where students and faculty actively work to find solutions through excellent classroom instruction and interaction. In an environment that values academic excellence, students at St. Pius X are challenged to grow in their intellect and education.

We know that the decision about where your student will attend high school is one that takes much consideration. Attached is a copy of our Viewbook which highlights our mission of striving to instill in every student an attitude of lifelong learning in the development of their spiritual, intellectual, emotional and physical gifts. These key elements, along with our academic excellence, distinguish us from other high schools in the area.

If you would like more information, please contact Missy Petit at 816-453-3450 ext. 116 or mpetit@stpiusxhs-kc.com. You are also welcome to attend our Open House on November 8th from 11:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m.

Sincerely,

Joseph Monachino, Jr.
Principal
