St. Charles Catholic School Weekly News
October 9, 2015
We are family!
Yes, the family model is returning to St. Charles Catholic School this year. To celebrate the return of families, the 8th grade has planned a special assembly for Friday, October 16 at 8:15 a.m. We are very excited to bring this program back to the St. Charles school community and look forward to a great year of learning and growing together!

For those new to our school, a family is comprised of students from various grade levels; K-8. The 8th graders assume the role of head of the family. Families will do various activities throughout the year and will sit together at all school Masses. Parents are invited to join us as we kick off the year at our first assembly where we will celebrate families and our very special 8th graders.

Thanks to all the families that completed the accreditation survey. It will remain open today only. Our jeans day will be next Friday, October 16th. All students whose parents turned in the last page via paper or email will be receiving a coupon on Thursday.

Today, Friday, October 9th is a Teacher Professional Development Day. Teachers are working on diocesan accreditation materials. All of this work helps us learn more about our school. The data we collect will guide us as we make improvements in Catholicity, teacher instruction, supervision, and finance. Thank you for your continued support!

Sincerely,
Ann Lachowitzer
Principal

Prayer Envelopes
In an effort to bring families together in prayer, we are excited to share with you a new program coming to St. Charles, a prayer envelope. Beginning Tuesday, October 20th, each homeroom will receive a prayer envelope with a rosary, guide to praying the rosary, and a prayer log. Each Tuesday a student will be selected to take the prayer envelope home. The important part, in a world of fractured thoughts, hurried moments, and scattershot prayers, is to take the time to pray, to clarify in your own mind the things your family is asking for, the things your family is grateful for, and the things your family is troubled about. All we ask is that you pray as a family, comment on your experiences on the prayer log, and return the envelope the following Monday so it may be shared with other families in the class.  Thank you to Kathy Wille, for spearheading this project and caring deeply for our students. As a former teacher, Kathy realizes the importance of family prayer and has graciously donated the rosaries and pamphlets.

Fun Facts: Through fundraising and advocacy, FIRE lights the way for children with special needs to share in the opportunities that Catholic schools provide. Without funding from F.I.R.E., most students with special learning needs would not be able to attend Catholic schools. St. Charles Catholic School is proud to be among the 13 diocesan schools that are able to welcome students who need extra support to learn and thrive.

Weekly Parenting Skill
Children Must Say, "NO!"
Children will oppose you. Their ongoing development demands that they be negative at certain times and in certain situations. Children need to say no sometimes to test their limits and the social rules that prevail. At each stage of life, right through adulthood, people need to resist and oppose.
The nature of your response to your child's negative behavior is critical. Many parents unknowingly respond in a way that actually teaches children to be more oppositional. One way is by assuming your child's motives are negative or malicious. That alone unconsciously makes matters much worse. We must become aware of our intent when we address children. We must rely on the Power of Love which lets us see the best in our children. How we see our children defines both them and us.
When children say "no" simply reflect by saying " You don't want to right now. I hear you" if possible explain why it has to be done and if you can offer a settlement. "Since this does have to be done and you don't want to because __________ (child fills in) let's try this. Maybe offer a time frame that it has to be done. Offer to help if the child feels overwhelmed. If the child is simply distracted by a toy, TV, game... it's up to you to control the environment before placing a demand if this is an ongoing issue. If you give a heads up such as in 5 minutes that needs to be turned off or put away so we can get ready to go or talk about something. Giving a "heads up"  can be super helpful to improve cooperation and follow through.
