St. Charles Catholic School Weekly News
October 2, 2015
A big thank you to parents and staff as we had to adjust our Thursday schedule to accommodate the Cesena funeral. I appreciate parents understanding why we had to make this last minute change to the schedule. My thanks to my staff for being flexible and local law enforcement for assisting with dismissal. While it was a tough day for the a lot of people, we came together as a community, as a family and remembered Nicholas. He will forever remain in our hearts and minds as a true reflection of St. Charles Borromeo.

Weekly Parenting Skill - Have you ever felt, "I give my child plenty of attention, and it just never seems enough?" Then, it is time to NOTICE your child!
The brain needs feedback. Every parent knows this. Listen to children negotiate for feedback from adults:
"Look, Mom, I can stand on one foot! Look! Look!"
As soon as you notice them, it starts again, "Mom! Look!"
The child's need to be seen is usually far greater than the adult's patience.
The brain loves feedback because it needs it to survive. The most helpful feedback we can give is noticing. Noticing is simply saying what you see. It involves no value statement about what you observe. It simply describes. This is difficult for most of us to learn because most of us were raised on judgements, and we strive, to this day, to live up to those imaginary standards.
Examples of Judging Verses Noticing:
A child is standing on one foot shouting, "Look! Look!"
Judgement: Aren't you the best one-foot stander alive!
Noticing: Look at you standing on one foot!

A child dives into the swimming pool.
Judgement: What a great dive honey!
Noticing: You did it! You dove into the swimming pool with your arms just like this (demonstrate).
A child hits a home run.
Judgement: Wow! Great job! Fabulous hit!
Noticing: Wow! You kept your eye on the ball and followed through with your swing. You hit it right over the fence!
Practice noticing at home:
A child brings home an "A" on a test
Judgement: I am so proud of you.
Noticing: Look at that, you got an "A". You studied and took time to
prepare. Good for you! Doesn't that feel great?

As always, I wish you well!

Accreditation Survey

This year, the Catholic Diocese of Kansas City-St. Joseph and St. Charles Catholic School are engaged in an ongoing continuous improvement process.  The Diocese is using the Advanc-ED Parent Survey as a means to elicit your opinions.  You are an integral part and your feedback will help us target areas for improvement.  The five sections on the survey represent the five Advanc-ED Standards for Quality School Systems and provide a means for learning about parent expectations of a high-quality school system. The survey will be open until October 8, 2015.

Students may earn a "jeans day" if parents complete the survey; one per family only. In order to earn the "jeans day" coupon, students must present a copy of the last page of the survey that says "Thank you for taking time to complete the survey". Please print the last page, write your family's last name on the sheet, and turn in to your youngest child's teacher. One survey per family, please.
Please be assured that your responses to this survey will be anonymous and your honest opinions are appreciated. If you have any questions about this survey, please contact Mrs. Lachowitzer at alachowitzer@stcharleskc.org or by phone, at 816-436-1009.

Thank you in advance for your support of the Catholic Diocese of Kansas City-St. Joseph and St. Charles Catholic School.
