Choir Festival - Experience of a Lifetime

On Sunday, April 13th, SCS hosted the 52nd Annual MSC Choir Festival, where seven high school choirs totaling 200 students, spanning from Oregon to Pennsylvania, performed together.

Students arrived at Sarasota Christian School, in the late afternoon on Friday, April 11, from all over the country.  Following a welcome dinner, students began rehearsing the seven songs they would perform on Sunday under the direction of guest conductor Dr. Todd W. Guy.

Students rehearsed non-stop throughout the weekend, with the exception of a visit to the famous Siesta Key Beach on Saturday evening.  Over 500 guests attended Sunday's concert, where each choir sang two songs individually and concluded with all the choirs singing seven songs together.  Hearing 200 student voices in unison literally moved some guests to tears.  And students considered the experience working under the direction of Dr. Guy a tremendous honor and great opportunity.

Odyssey Team Headed to Worlds For 6th Year In A Row
SCS sent four teams to the Odyssey of the Mind State Competition in Orlando on April 12th.  All four teams had outstanding performances and resulted in one team advancing to the World Competition, which will be held May 28-31 at Iowa State University.

SCS's veteran 11th grade team came in first in the state for the sixth year in a row and earned the Odyssey of the Mind's highest award, the Ranatra Fusca, for the third year in a row.  This award represents the essence of the Odyssey of the Mind program. The Ranatra Fusca Award is given to teams or individuals who display tremendous creativity at competitions. This award serves as an incentive for risk takers and creative thinkers among Odyssey of the Mind participants.

In their first year as a team and earning a trip to State Competition right off the bat, Sarasota Christian's 4th grade team turned in an impressive showing at the state level and is looking forward to returning next year.

The school's 6th grade team presented an entertaining and humorous solution and came in seventh in the state in their first year in the middle school division.

The school's 9th grade team presented their highly technical and creative solution and came in third in the state in their first year in the high school division.

Congratulation to all the students who participated!

New Swim Program Coach Brings Tremendous Experience

Newly appointed Head Swim Coach Julie Santiago begins her journey at Sarasota Christian with much enthusiasm and brings 30 plus years swimming experience both as a competitor and a coach.

A dual sport athlete in high school (softball and swimming), Julie knew that swimming was her ultimate calling. She was a High School All American swimming for York Suburban High School in York, Pennsylvania. She attended the University of Nevada , Las Vegas (UNLV), on a swimming scholarship. In 1992, she competed in the NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships. In 1994, she was named the Big West Conference's Scholar Athlete of the Year.

After earning a Masters Degree in Sport and Leisure Services from UNLV, Julie spent a few years in the sports marketing field.  In the year 2000, the sport of swimming pulled Julie back in when Team Rebel Aquatics hired her as the Head Age Group coach. Since then, Julie has held a variety of coaching positions including her current position as Head Age Group Coach for the Tsunami Swim Team here in Sarasota.

Coach Julie is passionate about the sport of swimming and looks forward to working with young student-athletes as they continue on their athletic and academic paths. Coach Julie has always felt her calling was to give back to a sport that gave her so much!
