The Art of Collecting

by Sarah M. Chaffee, gallery director at McGowan Fine Art.

New Hampshire is a state renowned for its natural attributes: lakes, mountains and a glorious eighteen miles of seacoast. But its better kept secret is the beauty that is produced by its artists and craftspeople. New Hampshire abounds with painters, sculptors, glass blowers, potters and more. My focus will be galleries throughout the state, varying from single artist showcases to multi-artist venues featuring a variety of styles and price ranges. Individual artists can sometimes be difficult to find as they are not in population centers nor do they keep retail hours.

My favorite reason to collect art is that I love it and I love how it looks in my home. It is an opportunity to express my tastes and make an individual statement. One of the best compliments someone ever paid me was "your home looks like you." My home offers me rest and relaxation - and the art is a big part of that feeling. While I have collected many pieces over the years I can remember distinctly the moment when I chose to buy each piece. I try to instill that spirit in others when they are purchasing art for their home. They should really love the piece and it should make them happy when they look at it.

This same rationale can be applied to corporations, both large and small. Read more...

Greetings!,

Mark your calendar for May 14's Business in the Arts Awards!

The NHBCA was formed to motivate, educate and recognize business support of and participation in the arts. The annual Business in the Arts Awards reflects the elements of this mission. Obviously it's easy to see the recognition part, especially if your business is listed as a nominee or you find your arts organization highlighted when your favorite business is being announced as the winner. But we also know that attendees at the event are surprised when they learn about the different types of support and the variety of arts available. People leave feeling eager to maintain and enhance the vitality of the arts.

The Business in the Arts Awards is a gala evening for business and arts leaders to celebrate together their partnerships and to encourage all of us to greater support and attendance of the cultural landscape that we are so fortunate to have in our lives.

So, make a nomination and be part of the celebration!

DID YOU KNOW?...

Measuring Up: New Hampshire Arts Education Data Project Report

Measuring Up is a statewide survey that documents the level of student access to-and participation in-arts education in the state's public schools, from kindergarten through grade 12. It provides an overview of the status and condition of education in music, visual arts, dance, theatre, and media arts.

The arts provide experience and practice in skills deemed essential by employers: creativity, collaboration, perseverance, flexibility, and problem-solving. The arts personalize learning, give voice to the individual, create community, highlight student success in a variety of ways, promote abilities needed in the workforce, and generate positive gains in academic achievement. Many research studies show that students who participate in the arts have higher self-esteem than those who do not, that studying the arts may improve academic gains in other areas and lower the drop-out rate, and that schools that value the arts have more positive school cultures and climates.
