President's Letter |
|
Debbie Tetrault,
PTA President
|
In the midst of all the weather stops and starts we had in early February, we were thrilled that our weather cooperated on February 9 for our first HCES Math & Science Night. What a wonderful example this was of several of National PTA's Family-School Partnership standards - Supporting Student Success, Welcoming All Families, and Collaborating with the Community. We've heard tons of great feedback on the event, and we estimate that over 200 families attended. A huge thanks goes to Ms. Debra Riser and Ms. Virginia Conerly for all of their help planning this successful event, along with many other HCES Faculty that planned and attended to the the Valentine's Day, Yummy Math, All Hands on Deck, and the Sports Math activities. Also, thanks to HHS students, Hudson Alpha, NASA, Huntsville Utilities for the volunteers and activities they brought to inspire our children. Another thanks goes to Michael Johnson for his Science Assembly performances that evening and during the school day. The performances were enjoyed by the students during the day, and by entire families that evening. A final thanks goes to to HCS Whitesburg P-8 PTA for allowing our PTA to borrow their "hair raising ball." This activity was a huge hit, along with so many other activities that evening!
Tonight, Tuesday, March 1, we have our third annual Reading Fair from 5:30-7:00 pm in the HCES Library. This is simply a night to be with your families - there is no PTA meeting component to tonight's event. Our annual 1st Grade Parade of Readers also kicks off this week on Thursday, March 3 at 9:00 am, with a 1st grade performance, pep rally, and parade. All are welcome to attend! The collaboration we make with our community during this pep rally/parade event and throughout the 5-week reading challenge is truly amazing! Finally, March wraps up with another pep rally and event kickoff on Wednesday, March 30 for our biennial Boosterthon race.
A new 2016-2017 PTA Board will be voted on during the Arts Night & PTA Meeting on Tuesday, April 19. We are seeking the below Board positions, and encourage everyone to consider these positions - even if you work during the day. The Board will find a convenient time to meet, or rotate the meetings to accommodate work and family schedules. It is a great way to learn more about what happens at school, and gives you a voice in all of our children's education. The 2016-2017 open PTA Board positions will include:
President
Treasurer
Secretary
Financial Secretary
1st VP Academic Support
4th VP After School Enrichment
5th VP Community Partners
|
Please contact a member of our Nomination Committee if you are interested in one of these positions: Julie Blauwkamp, Leslie Bradford, Jo Ann Grosnick, Leah Miller, Karen Woodington, or LeeAnn Wright.
Sincerely,
|

Principal's Letter

Hello Hampton Cove Families!
I hope you were able to get outside and enjoy the beautiful weather as much as I did! Vitamin D is good for the soul. March is always a great month. It brings fun-filled events, special celebrations and provides us with a little R&R during Spring Break. I look forward to sharing these special memories with you and your family.
We will kick off this month with several exciting events to include our PTA Reading Event and Parade of Readers. Please join us tonight, Tuesday, March 1st from 5:30 to 7:00 for our annual Reading Fair. Students have worked diligently to produce display boards of their favorite books. I had an opportunity to see many of them and they are outstanding. This event is come and go, so stop by whenever it is convenient for your family. Thursday is our first grade celebration for Parade of Readers. Parents, teachers, and students have come together to create a spectacular day. Thank you to everyone who has contributed monetarily or by volunteering your time and craft for this event. You are deeply appreciated.
Students will also complete their third quarter benchmark assessments this week. This assessment is focused around our quarterly standards in math and reading. All students, grades kindergarten through fifth, will take this assessment. This information guides our instruction for the final quarter as we prepare children for the transition to the next grade level.
Speaking of next year....Prek registration and our annual K for a Day have been scheduled district-wide. Prek registration will be on-line only on April 4th-8th. A "Frequently Asked Questions" (FAQ) document will be posted by the district on March 4th to help answer questions you may have. Our annual K for a Day has been scheduled for Friday, April 29th. This special day is for those incoming kindergartners and their parents who reside in the Hampton Cove School zone. During this event administration and faculty will meet with parents, while students interact with our kindergarten teachers. Additional information will be coming soon in regards to kindergarten registration and how to sign up for "K for a Day". Stay tuned and check our website for updates - www.hamptoncoveelementary.org.
As always, please feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns at autumn.bray@hsv-k12.org or 256.428.7180. Happy March!
Autumn Bray

Students Celebrate Read Across America
with Third Annual Reading Fair
Tuesday, March 1
5:30 - 7:00 pm
Students in kindergarten through 5th grade will celebrate Read Across America this month by participating in the third annual HCES Reading Fair.
Students in 2nd through 5th grades will select their favorite book from any genre and create a book project to be displayed in the library during our PTA reading event night on March 1. Details on the project requirements will come from your child's teacher.
- Students in kindergarten and 1st grade will dress up as their favorite storybook character for our reading event night.
- All families are welcome to join us on March 1 to celebrate reading and see the projects our students have created.
Library Needs Volunteers
The HCES library needs more volunteers! It is a great way to spend time with the kids & they are so much fun to interact with. It is only one 3 hour shift each month & you choose your day and whether its an AM or PM shift. Contact Wendy Wiggins, wendywiggins23@gmail.com if you or if you know someone is interested! Thanks!
Book Fair
The library would like to send a huge thank you to Dianna Cioppi and the book fair volunteers. Thank you for making the book fairs a success.
Thank you for supporting our book fairs. The funds raised from the book fairs are the main funds that fund our library. School libraries have not received funds from the state since 2008. This year we were fortunate to receive $694.42 in state funds. We could not have the collection of books in our library without your support.

PGA Junior League Golf
|
The PGA Junior Golf League at Hampton Cove kicks off soon. The price per player is $300 and covers all practices, instruction, matches, and PGA junior league gear. There will be 10-15 practices as well as 7-10 matches. The matches are a team/scramble format so it's a fun way to learn and grow in the game of golf for boys and girls ages 13 and under. For more information visit http://www.pgajlg.com/ or contact Shea Balch at sbalch@rtjgolf.com
The PGA Jr. League is in it's 3rd year at Hampton Cove and serves as our "Little League." Our HS girls team finished runner up in state last year and had our 4th state champion. Our boys qualified for sub-state for the 5th time in the last 6 years. Both teams have a great shot at state this year as Hampton Cove will be the host course for the state title. Our programs would not be this successful without the support of our feeder schools and programs like the PGA Jr. League. Thanks for including the announcement about the Jr. League season!
