President's Letter
Debbie Tetrault,
PTA President
February will be an exciting month for our Hampton Cove families!  We start out the month with our first Math & Science Night on Tuesday, February 9.  Valentine's Day classroom parties will then follow on Thursday, February 11, with overlapping times for K-2nd and 3-5th so that families may attend parties in two of their children's classrooms.  We finish the month with our annual 1st Grade Parade of Readers pep rally and parade and a Scholastic Book Fair starting on Friday, February 19.  The Book Fair will run through February 25. Finally, our third annual Reading Fair occurs just after that on Tuesday, March 1

Last Friday afternoon, the PTAs at GSES, HCES, and HCMS collaborated together to provide lunch for the teachers of all three schools, prior to a faculty Cultural Diversity inservice training. Thanks to Lawler's Bar-b-Que for allowing us to utilize our Community Partner food swap for this event.  Also thanks to the Anderton, Baxter, Neicamp, Utley, Whitaker families for providing drinks and desserts for HCES, and to HCMS President April Chapman and Kim Ivester for organizing the event.

A new 2016-2017 PTA Board will be voted on during the Arts Night & PTA Meeting on Tuesday, April 19.  Please email a member of our PTA Board by Monday, February 8, if you would like to be part of the nomination committee.  Also, we are seeking the below Board positions, and encourage everyone to consider these positions - even if you work during the day. The Board will find a convenient time to meet, or rotate the meetings to accommodate work and family schedules. It is a great way to learn more about what happens at school, and gives you a voice in all of our children's education. The 2016-2017 open 2- year PTA Board positions will include:
President
Treasurer
Secretary
Financial Secretary
1st VP Academic Support
4th VP After School Enrichment

The Huntsville Council of PTAs and Alabama PTA 2015-2016 PTA Award nominations are due on Sunday, March 1. If you would like to nominate a teacher for Teacher of the Year, please send the teacher's name and a paragraph with supporting information by Monday, February 8 to Debbie Tetrault.

Sincerely,
HCES PTA President

Principal's Letter
Autumn Bray, Principal
Hampton Cove Families,

Greetings! One of our core beliefs at HCES is that learning should be engaging. With that in mind, the teachers and faculty have been busy preparing for many exciting events sure to inspire new learning.

At Hampton Cove Elementary School, February brings a "LOVE" for learning. Over the past few months we have been working diligently to prepare for a night of exploration and fun at our upcoming Math & Science Night. This event will take place on Tuesday, February 9th from 5:15 to 7:15. Our teacher-led math and technology committees have put their heads together to bring you an event with hands-on activities and innovative science experiences. Thank you in advance to NASA, Huntsville Utilities, Hudson-Alpha, Huntsville High Chemistry Department, and partnering schools to help make this event a hit. If you are a family on the go like mine, place your order for Lawler's BBQ or Domino's pizza by February 5th. Pre-ordered food will be available in the elementary gym beginning at 5:15. In addition, we welcome Michael Johnson to HCES. Mr. Johnson, a science fanatic, will present two science "magic" shows sure to engage all families. The first presentation will be from 5:30-6:00 and the second presentation from 6:30-7:00. Each night show will be the same presentation. So, choose the time that works best for you and your family. We cannot wait to see you there!

The third quarter is nearing the half way mark. Progress reports will come home on Wednesday, February 10. Please review, sign, and return this document to your child's homeroom teacher. The following day, February 11, all classes will celebrate Valentine's Day. Celebrations for prek-second grade will be from 12:30-1:30 and third through fifth grade will be from 1:00-2:00. We welcome you to this event. Please make note that the school will be closed on Friday, February 12 and Monday, February 15. These dates were originally put on the calendar as weather make-up days.

Another annual event kicks off in February - our first grade Parade of Readers. The kick-off celebration will take place in the cafeteria on Friday, February 19. Local mascots and book characters will make their way to the stage to celebrate the reading event. All students will line the hallway, cheering on our first grade students and encouraging them to READ, READ, READ! If you are a first grade parent, family member, or friend, you don't want to miss this special day.

As we look ahead to March, we make plans for our annual Reading Fair to celebrate Read Across America week. Information regarding this event will come home soon, so mark your calendars for March 1st.

Pennies for Patients

Thank you very much for bringing in your change to help find cure so that children with blood cancer can get better. We gave out over 500 boxes and many have not returned yet - so please return as soon as possible.  If you return your box with at least one dollar, you will be helping scientists and medical doctors to make a difference for children who are sick.

Thank for helping and thanks for caring.

This activity gives students the opportunity to make a difference in the lives of others. One penny by itself has little value, but if we put our pennies together we can change or improve lives.

Girls' Lacrosse

The Huntsville Lacrosse Association's Girls Youth Team seeks NEW (no prior experience) and previous girls lacrosse players for Spring 2016.

Join "the fastest game on two feet," and the most rapidly growing high school and youth sport in America!  Enjoy the camaraderie and the competition!

Equipment requirements and cost are minimal for girls because, unlike boys' lacrosse, girls' lacrosse is not a contact sport:  cleats, colored mouth guard, girl's lacrosse player eye-guard, and a girl's lacrosse stick (loaner sticks available) are all that is required.

For aspiring goalies, HLA has goalie equipment that may be used.  Registration cost for first-time HLA girls is as follows:

Girls U9 & U11, ages 7-10,           $250.00

Girls U13, ages 11-12,                  $275.00

Girls U15, ages 13-14,                  $275.00

The fee includes uniform jersey and skirt.
Registration is open until  February 7th.

For more information on registration, please go to the Huntsville Lacrosse Association's web site at HUNTSVILLE LACROSSE WEBSITEor  contact the Girls Program Director, Mr. Will Daniels at WILL DANIELS EMAIL or Call Mrs. Jenny Daniels at 443-386-3529.
Practices will begin during February, two evenings per week, and some Saturdays before games begin (practices are at Redstone Arsenal's Goss Road athletic fields ¾ mile west of the gate at Patton Road and Drake Avenue/Goss Road - clearance for non-military family players' entry will be arranged by team officials).  More details will be published soon.

PGA Junior League Golf

The PGA Junior Golf League at Hampton Cove kicks off soon.  The price per player is $300 and  covers all practices, instruction, matches, and PGA junior league gear. There will be 10-15 practices as well as 7-10 matches. The matches are a team/scramble format so it's a fun way to learn and grow in the game of golf for boys and girls ages 13 and under.  For more information visit http://www.pgajlg.com/ or contact Shea Balch at sbalch@rtjgolf.com

The PGA Jr. League is in it's 3rd year at Hampton Cove and serves as our "Little League."  Our HS girls team finished runner up in state last year and had our 4th state champion.  Our boys qualified for sub-state for the 5th time in the last 6 years.  Both teams have a great shot at state this year as Hampton Cove will be the host course for the state title.  Our programs would not be this successful without the support of our feeder schools and programs like the PGA Jr. League.   Thanks for including the announcement about the Jr. League season!
