President's Letter
Debbie Tetrault,
PTA President
Happy New Year! Thank you to everyone for your assistance with PTA and school activities throughout the first semester and in December. It was a busy month! From the Committee Chairs who ran events, to all of the Room Parents who helped with Holiday Parties - we appreciate everything you do for Hampton Cove Elementary.

I'd like to extend a special thank you to two individuals this month.  First, a huge Thank You to HCES Custodian Terry Osmer.  Terry is the quiet thunder that keeps our school organized and clean, and he is always willing to extend a hand to help our PTA.  He's also the faculty member that opens and closes our school gate most days, so that we can more quickly traverse the car line lanes on our way to after-school activities at HCES and HCMS. Second, I'd like to Thank Anita Beatty for all of her effort in the production piece of our School Directory, as well as Allied Photocopy for printing the Directory.  I hope you are as proud as I am of the final Directory product, and it's due in large part to the high level of professionalism that Anita and Allied have brought to this project over the past four years.

We are looking forward to a great 2016 at HCES! The PTA will ease back into activities in January. Expect another busy month at school for PTA and our families in February. Please mark your calendars for our new Family Science Night on Tuesday, February 9.  Soonafter, we will have Valentine's Day classroom parties on Thursday, February 11, due to the weather make-up holidays on February 12 and 15.  The end of February brings us our next Scholastic Book Fair, which is just prior to our Reading Fair and the start of the Parade of Readers during that first week of March.

The HCES PTA Board will have several members rotating off and positions will be open for the 2016-2017 school year. This includes the President, Treasurer, Financial Secretary, and Secretary positions. These positions will be voted on at the April 19, 2016 PTA Meeting. Please consider if you are willing to serve in some capacity on the HCES PTA Board. It is a great way to learn more about what happens at school, and gives you a voice in all of our children's education.

Sincerely,
HCES PTA President

Principal's Letter
Autumn Bray, Principal
Welcome back to another great year of learning at HCES! I trust you were able to enjoy time with your family and friends over the holiday. I know my family enjoyed warm weather and delicious food. However it is great to be back with your sweet children and our amazing staff.

As 2016 kicks off we move into our second semester at Hampton Cove Elementary. On January 5th, we welcomed several new families into our community. We also welcomed a new third grade teacher, Ms. Courtney Hoven. Ms. Hoven comes to us from The University of Alabama with a degree in Elementary Education. She has a love for math and science and comes highly recommended. Please take the opportunity to welcome Ms. Hoven and our newcomers. A big thank you goes out to Ms. Debbie McDaniel for filling in the month of December in third grade. What an impact she made in such a short period of time!

January also begins our mid-year assessments. Students will be assessed through STAR Reading & Math. STAR is an assessment of reading comprehension and math achievement for students through grade 12. It tracks development in a variety of domains to include word knowledge and skills, comprehension strategies, analyzing literary text, understanding author's craft, and analyzing argument and evaluating text. The math portion focuses on numbers and operations, algebra, geometry and measurement, and data analysis, statistics, and probability.   In addition, kindergarten through second grade will be given the DIBELS (Dynamic Indicators of Basic Early Literacy Skills) assessment. It is always surprising to see how quickly our students grow as learners. These assessments help us to determine next steps in our instructional planning for all students.

Report cards will come home on January 13th. Please note the grading information has been condensed to a one-page document to display overall course proficiency. Individual standards for reading and math continue to be available for viewing on the iNow Parent Portal. Directions will be attached to the report card as a reference.

Please take note of the HCS Annual Proof of Residence Campaign. All residents are REQUIRED to provide proof of residence annually. Information was sent home on January 6th in Wednesday folders and can be found below in a highlighted section of our newsletter. Please contact our office with any questions.

Our PTA and faculty have some exciting events planned for this semester to include a Math & Science Night in February, a reading event in March, and a celebration of the arts in April. Our annual career fair will also take place in April. Our committees have been working hard to plan these fun filled events. Please stay tuned for updates. Information will be forthcoming soon for our February event.

Please take a look at the following important dates:

January 13 - Report Cards
January 14 - Spirit Night at Five Guys (Jones Valley)
January 18 - Martin Luther King Jr. HOLIDAY
January 29 - ½ Day for Students - 11:30 Dismissal
January 29 - Deadline for Proof of Residency

I hope this year brings you great success, good health, and special memories. Happy New Year!

Math Super Stars
Math Super Stars
Second Semester Kickoff
Wednesday, January 13

Math Super Stars will kick off for the 2nd semester on Wednesday, January 13. All students will receive a worksheet the first 2 weeks. After that, only students who return a worksheet will receive one in their Wednesday folders. Missed worksheets can be printed from home from the HCES website. There's a Math Super Stars icon on the right hand side of the page.

Math Super Stars is intended to enhance and broaden our kids' math knowledge. Ignore prior information about not helping your kids! Parental help is definitely encouraged! Some concepts are especially challenging and require problem solving skills that our kids are still developing.

Worksheets are due on Fridays, but often aren't picked up by the graders until Monday. Your child will receive credit for completing a worksheet regardless of when it is turned in. 5 completed worksheets in this semester will qualify your child for attendance at the Math Super Stars Celebration in May.

If you have questions, please feel free to contact Jen Wade at jenbaileywade@gmail.com
Pennies For Patients
JANUARY 11-22, 2016
Leukemia & LYMPHOMA Society: STUDENT SERIES

Pennies for Patients

This is follow-up information to the December newsletter regarding our effort to join with other schools in Alabama to collect change for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS).  The parent letter made mention of an individual coin box, but we did not receive the boxes. We only received classroom boxes, so the students can bring their change in a zip lock bag and empty it in the classroom boxes. Please see the letter in the Wednesday folders.
This activity gives students the opportunity to make a difference in the lives of others. One penny by itself has little value, but if we put our pennies together we can change or improve lives.

HCES families and faculty are encouraged to attend to check out all of the great science projects and support HCMS.  All student projects will be set up in the cafeteria for the viewing, and many students will be on hand to ask questions to about their work.

Community Event - Liz Huntley Presentation
Huntsville Council of PTAs
Welcomes
Child Advocate Liz Huntley
Thursday, January 14, 6:00 pm
Lee High School Lecture Hall

This is a historic time for Huntsville City Schools. For the first time we have a blueprint to follow that would enable us to shed the decades-old desegregation order and achieve unitary status. Implementation of these changes began in the 2015 - 2016 school year, and they have resulted in many new initiatives that have had an impact on all those involved with Huntsville City Schools.

The PTA wants to ensure that our focus remains on the needs of the children. To give us insight into the process of desegregation from a child's perspective we have invited Liz Huntley to share her experiences as a child caught in the process of desegregation. Ms. Huntley was born in Huntsville's Butler Terrace public housing development and overcame a childhood of extreme hardship to become a committed child advocate and a passionate litigation attorney. Ms. Huntley currently is a member of the Auburn University Board of Trustees as well. She is the author of the moving memoir "More Than a Bird." To learn more about her story, you can visit her website or watch her powerful TED Talk.

Join the Huntsville Council of PTAs as we welcome Liz Huntley next Thursday, January 14th, at 6:30pm at the Lee High School Lecture Hall. The event is free and open to the public.
