President's Message
I hope that everyone is enjoying their summer!  My 4th grader said the other day that this was "the best summer ever."  How wonderful it was to hear that! The "best summer ever" simply includes a visit to South Carolina, HEL/HCMS Gym Rats program, tennis lessons, and daily visits to the Hampton House pool.  I'm sure many of you are enjoying a similar and simple summer routine, continuing spring sports seasons, or taking advantage of trying new activities through many of the summer camps offered in Huntsville and in other cities. Please see a short list below of camps offered through HCS, and in our community.

The HCES Office is now closed for summer vacation, and it will re-open on Thursday, July 9. Huntsville City Schools will be working on general maintenance and school improvements during the 4-week closure.

We would like to extend a fond farewell to TOSA Kitrise Torain.  Ms. Torain has accepted a TOSA position at Lee High School, under Principal Anne Jobe.  We will certainly miss Ms. Torain's smiling face and kind words this school year!  The HCES PTA thoroughly enjoyed working with Ms. Torain during the 2014-2015 school year, and I'm sure many of our HCES families will echo similar sentiments.

We have several 2015-2016 HCES PTA Committee Chair positions open with each of our PTA Board positions. We need Committee Chairs and members to help make our events and projects happen throughout the school year. Please consider helping HCES and our PTA next school year.  We also have a need for a larger number of volunteers in the following areas: contact Karen Woodington if you are interested in being a Room Parent, Beth Bryant for the HCES Clinic, or Wendy Wiggins for the HCES Library.

Also, Landscaping and School Directory Production have 2015-2016 Chairpersons, however, a Chair-elect is needed for each for succession planning for the 2016-2017 school year.  Please contact Melanie Clark (Landscaping) or Laura Hale (School Directory Production - Microsoft Publisher) if interested in either of these roles

If there are any questions about our PTA, please contact me or any member of our PTA Board.   You can also email our PTA Gmail account at hcespta01@gmail.com.  We will begin to use this email account regularly for the 2015-2016 school year.

MindGear Votes Needed
for Mini Mobile Fab Lab Grant
Votes Needed by Friday, June 19

Imagine the Mini Mobile Fab Lab pulling up at an event or HCES! To make this happen, MindGear needs 250 votes by Friday, June 19 at https://www.missionmainstreetgrants.com/vote/businesses.  Choose "MindGear" as the selected business, and cast your vote!  250 votes are needed to be considered for the $100K grant, and we'd like to give MindGear many more votes than 250.

MindGear has huge plans for this great vehicle. MindGear equipment, combined with this $100K grant, would create a mobile platform for kids to explore programming, graphic design, robotics, 3d printing, laser cutting and CNC Milling. MindGear expects within a year to be constructing these for school systems around the country!

MindGear will be teaching Robotics (FLL & Jr.) as an HCES A/S Enrichment Club, during the 2015-2016 school year.

HCES New After School Enrichment Clubs

HCES PTA After School Enrichment Clubs
2015-2016 School Year
Instructors Needed!

Exciting News!  The HCES PTA is proposing five new After School Enrichment Clubs at HCES for the 2015-2016 school year!  Photography and Young Author's Club will support the National PTA Reflections program, by encouraging students and giving them time to work on their projects during the sessions.  Additionally, we know many students are taking photos with electronic devices, and this club will help students improve on their photography through various devices.  The Running Club and Computer Club will return to HCES after several years absence from our club list. Learn to Play Chess is another new club to HCES.  This will support the development of current and future players on our HCES Chess Team, as well as being an introduction to the game for leisure play.

Instructors are needed for these clubs. Instructors may write the curriculum, select a convenient week day for the class, and determine which grade(s) will participate in the club.  Also, an instructor may choose to hold the club as few as four, and as many as 10 sessions during the first semester of the 2015-2016 school year.  Finally, there is no obligation to continue to serve as an Instructor during the second semester of the 2015-2016 school year.

Scholastic Summer Reading Program

Scholastic Summer Reading Challenge 2015

Overview

 Now in its 9th year, the Scholastic Summer Reading Challenge is a free online/mobile reading program dedicated to stopping the "Summer Slide" by encouraging kids to read throughout the summer months when school is out. In 2014, 1,376,264 kids from 7,334 schools in all 50 states and 29 countries set a new record for summer reading of 304,749,681 minutes!

 Starting May 4, 2015, kids can log their reading minutes as set a new world record for summer reading, enter sweepstakes to win fabulous prizes, and earn digital rewards when they complete weekly reading challenges. In addition to being featured in the 2016 Scholastic Book of World Records, the Top 20 schools (along with the top school in every state) will also receive a badge for their website and a "Reading Plaque" to display at school.

 This year's theme: "Power Up & Read," creating an innovative online reading experience where kids can get "powered up" and energized about new books, fun prizes, and writing their own short stories. The goal is to get kids super excited about finding great books and reading all summer long.

Key Features:

For Kids:

o As kids read and log their minutes throughout the summer, they will be able to unlock exclusive new short stories by some of their favorite authors, earn rewards and help set a new world record for summer reading.

For Parents:

o Parents and teachers can access activity sheets so kids can create their own stories.

o Parents and teachers can download book lists for kids from birth to young adult.
