President's Letter

Happy New Year! Thank you to everyone for your assistance with PTA and school activities throughout the first semester and in December. It was a busy month! From the Committee Chairs who ran events, to all of the Room Parents who helped with Holiday Parties - we appreciate everything you do for Hampton Cove Elementary.

We are looking forward to a great 2015 at HCES! The PTA will ease back into activities in January, and then hit the ground running in February.  Expect another very busy month at school for PTA and our families. Please mark your calendars for our new Family Science Night on Thursday, February 12. Just following, our 5th graders will go to Space Camp from February 16-20. That week as well - Parade of Readers kicks off for 1st graders on the morning of Friday, February 20. All of our students will have a chance to cheer the 1st graders on, as they parade around the halls of HCES after the performance and pep rally. Soon after that, we will celebrate Dr. Seuss' birthday with a Reading Night on March 3. In April, 4th graders head to Nature's Classroom, and we'll also celebrate Teacher Appreciation Week. In May, it will be time to dive into testing for our 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders.

The HCES PTA Board will have several members rotating off and positions will be open for the 2015-2016 school year. These positions will be voted on at the April 21, 2015 PTA Meeting. Please consider if you are willing to serve in some capacity on the HCES PTA Board. It is a great way to learn more about what happens at school, and gives you a voice in all of our children's education.

Principal's Letter

Happy New Year! January comes in with excitement - resolutions, goals, and the beginning of a fresh start. I trust you enjoyed time with family and friends. The holiday season is always a special time I cherish with my family. Thank you to our PTA for organizing and assisting in our holiday parties. The class celebrations were a hit! We truly appreciate your continued support and generosity. As we begin 2015, I look forward to the activities and continued friendships HCES students will share in this year.

Just as December was a busy month, January follows accordingly. This month our new ETA (Entertainment Technology Academy) space will be up and running. The vibrant space will surely inspire creativity and provide a great learning environment for our students. Congratulations again to Ms. Bell for the recent $10,000 award for our ETA program. Additionally, January will kick off Project Lead the Way. PLTW is the nation's leading provider of K-12 STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, & Math) programs. Students will engage in hands-on projects while working collaboratively with their peers to develop problem solving and design skills. Each grade level will begin at different times, but all students K-5 will participate in PLTW by May. Check out www.pltw.org for additional information.

STAR testing will begin January 7th for all students. Grades first through fifth will complete both STAR math and reading. This assessment will provide us with Student Growth Percentiles (SGP) for the year. We are confident the SGP results will demonstrate the hard work of our students and amazing faculty. Pre-k and kindergarten will complete STAR Early Literacy only. Report cards for the second quarter will come home on January 14th in your child's Wednesday folder. We will also celebrate the 100th day of School on January 23rd. Students will participate in fun, learning activities with their class.

In closing, I would like to thank Exxon Mobil for awarding us with an educational grant for $500 toward math and science. This support will help us achieve our yearly goals in mathematics and science.

Upcoming Dates:

First Day for Students: January 6th

STAR Testing: January 7th - January 12th

Report Cards - January 14th

Martin Luther King, Jr. Holiday - January 19th

100th Day of School - January 23rd

½ Day for Students - February 6th

Thank you for an amazing 2014 school year! As always, please contact me at autumn.bray@hsv-k12.org or 256.428.7180 for any questions or concerns.

Sincerely,

Autumn H. Bray

Volunteer Opportunities

Family Science Night

HCES PTA will use the recently received $1K grant for a new Family Science Night on Thursday, February 12. This event will occur around the time of National PTA's Take Your Family to School Week (February 16-20, 2015). Along with HCES Faculty, our PTA Board and event Chair are beginning to plan this event, and we are fortunate to have the support of HCS' Whitesburg P-8 in this endeavor.

We need volunteers now to help with planning the Science Night, and additional volunteers on the evening of Thursday, February 12. Contact Chair Shannon Isbill or Debbie Tetrault for more information.

National PTA School of Excellence

National PTA recently provided us with a roadmap towards becoming a National PTA School of Excellence.  We are hoping to achieve this distinction within the next year. National PTA School of Excellence is "a recognition program that supports and celebrates partnerships between PTAs and schools to enrich the educational experience and overall well-being for all students."  The required report to be considered for a School of Excellence needs to be completed by June. The PTA needs volunteers now to assist with implementing some of the roadmap's recommendations, and preparing for the final report.  Please contact Debbie Tetrault to volunteer. For more information, visit http://www.pta.org/excellence.

HCES Clinic Volunteers

Needed throughout the month for 4-hour shifts. No medical background is needed. See the Clinic News article below for details, or contact Beth Bryant or Floyd Broussard.

Math Superstars

Math Super Stars wrapped up a great first semester!  We hope you all have enjoyed working with your children with new math skills and challenges.
We celebrated with all the students who participated during first semester on December 12 with a cookie party!  Everyone had a good time :).
This semester we will also have Kindergarten classes get involved too!

NOTE: Students are to return completed worksheets to the Red folder in their classroom only. If the Red folder is not in the classroom, we are grading papers and will return the Red folder on Wednesday. Please have the student hold their completed work until the Red folder is available. Please do not turn the worksheet into the HCES Front Office or the PTA box or folder. These areas are not checked regularly for Math Superstars worksheets.

Thanks,
Math Super Stars

Book Camp

Book Camp continues in January after a great start to the year. All students in grades 2-5 participate in this program that encourages reading across different genres. Students choose from 12 genres (fantasy, nonfiction, poetry, science fiction, adventure, realistic fiction, sports, mystery, historical fiction, graphic novel, biography and folklore) and write summaries in their Book Camp journals about the books they read. At the end of each month they can earn a dog tag for every three books or 300 pages they read in a genre--up to two tags per month.

Students who earned five or more tags between August and December enjoyed participating in our hot chocolate and cookies reading celebration. Those who earn five tags between January and May will be invited to join our Meaux's Sno-balls spring reading celebration.

Ask your children what genres they are reading in this month! Parents who are interested in helping with this program can contact Elena Barbre, Reading Committee chair, at ebarbre@comcast.net.

The next Book Camp meetings are Thursday, January 29 and Friday, January 30.

ALL KIDS HEALTH INSURANCE PROGRAM

Did you know that Alabama has an approved State Children's Health Insurance Program? The program, called All Kids, is administered by the Alabama Department of Public Health. Benefits are provided by contract with Blue Cross/Blue Shield using a preferred provider you choose from a pre-approved list.

With All Kids, parents can have peace of mind knowing their child has twelve months of continuous healthcare coverage, renewable on a yearly basis. Benefits include regular check-ups and immunizations, sick child physician visits, prescriptions, vision and dental care, hospitalizations, mental health and substance abuse, emergency services, and more.

If you have children under age 19 who are uninsured and live in Alabama, you can apply for this low cost coverage. Cost is based on family size and income. An application can be completed on-line (https://insurealabama.adph.state.al.us/), printed for completion at home (www.adph.org/allkids), or requested by phone (1-888-373-5437). Application and information packets are also available at any County Health Department, many doctor offices, hospitals, pharmacies and schools. Application and information packets are available in the clinic.

Please consider volunteering in the HCES Clinic.

The HCES/HCMS Clinic has a significant need for volunteers.  With over 1,200 students in attendance at both schools, volunteers become crucial in assisting Nurse Floyd Broussard with the demands of the Clinic, especially between the hours of 10AM and 2PM.  During this four-hour period, the Clinic sees approximately 65% of the current 40-50 daily visits. This number will likely increase as the cold weather sets in.  This time frame is also when Floyd is busiest taking care of the diabetic students (multiple times each), doing treatments on students with other known medical needs, and giving medication.

The four hour shift of 10AM-2PM can be split, if necessary, between two volunteers: 10AM-12PM and 12PM-2PM, although the full 4 hour shift is preferred.  Volunteers are more than welcome to come earlier or stay later than their shift, as long as the critical four hour time frame is met.

No medical background is required to volunteer, and the nurse will be with you in the Clinic at all times. Responsibilities of the volunteer primarily include helping the nurse assess the students who walk into the Clinic throughout the day.  Typical ailments include: scrapes, injuries, headaches, stomachaches, and symptoms of mild colds and illnesses.

Clinic volunteers must attend orientation to review school policies and student care guidelines.  The orientation will last approximately 1.5 hours.  One session of Clinic training occurred at the beginning of the school year, and another training session will be held in the near future.

We're now using VolunteerSpot to organize sign ups for HCES/HCMS Clinic volunteers.

Here's how it works in 3 easy steps:

1) Click this link to see our Sign-Up on VolunteerSpot: http://vols.pt/Gmoj49
2) Review the options listed and choose the spot(s) you like.
3) Sign up! It's Easy - you will NOT need to register an account or keep a password on VolunteerSpot.

Note: VolunteerSpot does not share your email address with anyone. If you prefer not to use your email address, please contact me and I can sign you up manually.

Thank you in advance for considering this opportunity, and for any help that you can provide for the HCES/HCMS Clinic.  Taking care of the kids of our friends, neighbors, and relatives during their times of minor illness or injury is a rewarding and emotionally uplifting experience.

Please feel free to contact me or Jennifer Applebaum (jennifer.applebaum@gmail.com) for any questions or concerns.

Community Partner Spotlight

Why choose a pediatric dentist? Because children are not small adults.

Like pediatricians, pediatric dentists are specifically trained to treat the specific needs of infants, children & teens. Children have different dental and behavioral needs than most adults and our pediatric dentists are dedicated to examining and treating children in ways that make them comfortable.  Children's developing mouths and oral habits make early dental care essential and we have the experience and qualifications to care for a child's teeth, gums, and mouth throughout the various stages of childhood. We develop trusting relationships and provide genuine care from the start, creating enjoyable, stress-free visits.

Here at Alabama Pediatric Dental Associates (APDA), the doctors and staff are excited about helping your child achieve a happy, healthy smile. As patients, their comfort, satisfaction and well-being are our major concerns. Our pediatric dental team takes great pride and enjoyment in the work we do. We pledge to provide you with the very best possible care and build content and open relationships with you and your family.

Even more good news? We are opening an office in Hampton Cove this Spring! Same great doctors, same exceptional service-just a little closer to home. We are scheduling appointments now, so call today to reserve your spot!
