President's Letter

Happy Spring! If we say that enough it will be true-right?!  If you're like me you are more than ready to say goodbye to the winter of 2014. I believe the kids are too!  One way I know spring is around the corner is things are hopping at school! From Parade of Readers to the Reading Fair school is bustling with activity.

The PTA is busy behind the scenes, as well.  Please mark your calendar for Tuesday, April 8. This will be our final PTA meeting of the year. It will be an Arts Night for the students.  We look forward to hearing from the choir, as well as seeing a presentation from the Theater Club. Our HCES Art teacher, Ms. Branch is busy working with the kids on art projects, as well. Be looking for more information on this evening in the coming weeks!

At the April 8 PTA Meeting, our PTA membership will be electing officers for the Board of Directors' 2014-2015 school year. There are several members that will rotate off of the board. If you think you might be interested in offering your time and talents to the school in this capacity, we would love to hear from you!  April Chapman has graciously agreed to serve as the Nominating chairperson this year.  You can contact her at aprilchapman@mac.com or me at seanandcindi@bellsouth.net

Get your running shoes on and get ready for the "Boosterthon Fun Run."  The fundraiser is scheduled to get under way with a pep rally on Wednesday, April 1,and wrap up with a Fun Run on Thursday, April 10. Money raised from this year's Fun Run will help purchase more Promethian Boards (active boards) for the classrooms, to add to those purchased last school year. Please note that Boosterthon will work with the kids during PE classes, and this event occurs bi-yearly. More information regarding Boosterthon will come home in Wednesday folders.

Hard to believe we're heading toward the finish line for this school year!  Let's put on our running shoes and finish strong!

Thank you to everyone who is working hard to make HCES an incredible school!

Character Education

Every month Huntsville City Schools shares several character education words with our students, faculty and community in hopes that these words will be discussed in the classroom, at the dinner table, in business meetings, during after school activities, etc. We review the character education words throughout the month in the classroom and during school-wide activities and we also want our external communities to get involved. Wouldn't it be great to have our entire community talking about Courage and Creativity during the month of March! And - not just talking about these words but modeling the way, as well!

Character Education Calendar:

  • September - Courtesy, cooperation, honesty
  • October - Patience & self-control
  • November - Citizenship and patriotism
  • December - Generosity and compassion
  • January - Diligence and perseverance
  • February - Respect and tolerance
  • March - Creativity and courage
  • April - Cleanliness and respect for the environment
  • May - Cheerfulness, fairness, and kindness

Principal's Letter

I know that February is our shortest month, and it has certainly seemed like it this year. With all the delays and snow days, the month slipped by very quickly! Our teachers and students have been working hard to make up the lost instructional time, and we do appreciate your understanding as we have asked the students to do a little more at home to make sure we meet our academic goals for the year. One of the great things in putting February behind us is that spring is not too far away. We anxiously await its arrival!

The end of February means Parade of Readers for our first graders! Our kickoff celebration and parade took place on Friday, February 28. After my initial experience last year, I can honestly say that there are no words to describe this event. I want to thank our wonderful parents who have spent countless hours preparing for Parade of Readers. The decorations are beautiful and the first graders are keyed up and ready to go. A fun time will be had by all.

We continue to focus on reading at Hampton Cove Elementary. Reading is the key to our students' success in all academic disciplines. This week, we are in the midst of our first Reading Fair for our fourth and fifth graders. Think of it as a science fair but with the student's favorite book as the focus; students will use all of their TWIRL (talking, writing, investigating, reading, and listening) skills to visually display their selected book, while our younger students will be treated to the displays. We are also continuing our highly successful Book Camp. This innovative and much-copied program inspires our students to read across different genres and be exposed to a variety of authors and situations. Both the Reading Fair and Book Camp are the brainchild of our wonderful Reading Coach, Dr. Pam Barnes. I want to extend my heartfelt thanks to Dr. Barnes for inspiring our students to love reading.

Our next round of SchoolNet Benchmark Assessments takes place March 4-7. These assessments help measure and gauge how our learning goals are being met. These assessments will be given in reading and math, and we look forward to demonstrating our academic prowess once again.

Finally, I want to extend special congratulations to HCES 5th grade student Elena Tetrault. Elena is the Alabama State Champion for her first place finish in the Alabama Arbor Day Poster Contest! She was surprised with an award at an assembly at the school, spent an afternoon in Montgomery with Alabama First Lady Dianne Bentley, and was presented with a special resolution at the Huntsville City Board of Education meeting by Superintendent Casey Wardynski. She completed interviews locally on Channel 48 and Channel 19, on WLOX13 in Montgomery, AL, and was featured on the Huntsville City Schools website. It was quite a week for Elena, and we were so proud of her. She is a shining example of an exemplary Hampton Cove Elementary School student. Congratulations, Elena, on a job well done!

Please let me know if I can be of any service or help in any way.
You can reach me by email at ray.landers@hsv-k12.org or at 256-428-7180.  Take care and please keep in touch!

Traffic & Safety
The "No Loading Zone" sign has been removed from the HCES front overhang, and students may now exit their cars along the HCES 2nd/3rd Grade hallway sidewalk along theRed curb area, as it stretches from the school's entrance overhang to the side parking lot.

Please make one carline drop-off at HCES or HCMS if you have a combined carload of elementary and middle school students in the morning. HCMS students may exit vehicles at HCES along with their HCES student carpool riders and vice versa. This should help the length of our car lines!

Cars are advised not to turn left at Audubon and the Old Hwy. 431 access road from 7:30-8:00 am. We have requested more police presence at this intersection, so that our parents/guardians can efficiently get through the light at Old Hwy. 431 and turn right from Audubon to get into the school's car line.

Finally, please be considerate, slow down, and let drivers in who are trying to turn right from Audubon to the access road to get to HCMS and HCES.

A smile and a wave

into the car line

can make someone's day!

Book Camp

March Book Camp Club Meetings

Tuesday, March 18

Wednesday, March 19

Students share about a book they had read during the past month, using their Book Camp journals to remember facts about the story. Everyone who read three books or 300 pages in a chosen genre (adventure, fantasy, mystery, folklore, poetry, and science fiction--just to name a few) receives a genre tag (and chain, if they have not received one yet) to wear with pride.

Student participation in 2nd grade continued to be nearly 100%! Please encourage your children in 2nd-5th grades to think about genres when they choose books, and to write about the books they read in their Book Camp journal, so they can join the fun. We will have a shaved ice party in May for those who earn a total of 8 tags (including those earned during the first semester)

Please contact HCES PTA Board 1st V.P. Academic Support and Book Camp Chairperson Elena Barbre if you can help during the meeting on Tuesday, March 18 or Wednesday, March 19.

Also, check with your child's teacher on which day their class will attend Book Camp.  We'd like all of the kids to wear their chains and genre tags that day!

After School Enrichment

Forms for after school enrichment classes are loaded on the HCES website,  On the right side of the page (third icon down), click on the "After School Forms" tab. This will take you to the "PTA Club" page and you can review the club registration flyers. The dates for all clubs, fees and the club contact person will be found on each registration flyer.

Please download and complete the form, as well as a mandatory Release Form for each child and for EACH club. Staple the check with the appropriate payment amount to the top of the registration form. Send the registration form, release form, and payment in to your child's teacher or directly to the HCES Front Office. As usual, clubs will be filled on a first come, first serve basis.  The club chair will contact you when they receive the registration to confirm your child's place!

Classes include the following:

  • Art (Tuesday, beginning March 4 for all grades, 1 spot remaining)
  • Computer (Friday, 1st grade, beginning April 4)
  • Foreign Language: German (Tues./Thurs.), Mandarin (Thurs.)
  • Music - instruction for piano, violin, and guitar (Mon. & Tues. through Valley Conservatory)
  • Science (Classes are FULL for second semester; Wednesday, through Sci Quest)
  • Theater Arts (Monday, through Fantasy Playhouse, openings remain in the 3rd-5th grade section)
Please contact the HCES PTA Board 4th V.P., Afterschool Enrichment Programs Laura Hale with any questions.
Math Superstars

Extra sheets may be printed from the HCES websiteWe hope you are having a great time exploring and growing in math with your children!

Advice for parent assistance:  Parents/guardians should simply guide the child though each question. Read it for them if they have difficulty with the words but don't give them the answer. These questions are meant to challenge the student, and as much as the parent may like to help, it is better for their learning if they work through it themselves. Encourage your children as they work on the problems and let them know the sheets will come back graded the next week, so you can review and practice anything missed or incorrect.

If you have any questions, please contact Math Superstars Co-Chairs Melissa Pressnell or Neila-Susan Thompson.

Financial Update

April money clip art

Did you know that a large part of the PTA budget goes directly to supporting the HCES teachers? The money that is raised through SOS and other fundraisers throughout the year provides $350 per classroom for supplies, plus money for our Computer Teacher's salary, library, art, music, reading programs, and much more!  PTA funds are also providing many of the new "apps" and subscriptions that students are using on their laptops and iPads. Approximately $13,000 was spent on school improvements and preparation for the Blue Ribbon Schools evaluation.  All together, these teaching support programs comprise 69% of the PTA budgeted expenses for the 2013-2014 school year.

For questions about PTA income and expenses or to offer budget suggestions for the future, please contact PTA Treasurer Stephanie Ortel.

Box Tops for Education

Box Tops

The Spring Box Tops Challenge took place from February 10-14.  Congratulations to HCES Grade 4!  This grade collected the most Box Tops and had the sweet reward of an ice cream party!  Through this Challenge, HCES PTA earned $842, with a total of 2,908 Box Tops collected for the 2013-2014 school year.

Please continue to save Box Tops over the summer for our Fall 2014 challenge. If you have any Box Tops that are expiring soon, you may send them into the HCES front office, and they will be tallied and mailed to Box Tops before they expire.

Please contact Box Tops Chairperson Barbara Ashcroft or HCES PTA 3rd V.P. Sales & Fundraising Toni Wessells if you have any questions.
Support Our Students (SOS)

The SOS fundraiser tax letters were sent home in the students' January 29 Wednesday folders. If you haven't received a letter, please check with your child's teacher. These tax letters are an acknowledgment of any donations that were received through December 2013. Thanks to all that have donated to SOS this school year!

Donations (first child $100, each additional child $50, payable to HCES PTA) are still being accepted. You may also make a donation directly to your child's classroom, or any other area in the school that you may feel needs "extra" money. You can specify where your donation is directed towards, and we will maintain these extra monetary donations in the PTA Budget, if you would like. Donations are Tax-Deductible!

If you have any questions, please contact your child's teacher for a missing letter, or HCES PTA 3rd V.P. Sales & Fundraising Toni Wessells

Bottle Cap Collection
Ends March 31
(last collection on Wednesday, April 1)
(Please turn in Friday, March 21 or by Tuesday, March 31)

We are still racking up the caps for this year's City of Huntsville Green Team Bottle Cap Contest. HCES has already collected 141,429 bottle caps. Terrific job HCES! We have exceeded last year's total by 30,000 with 3 weeks more to goWe'd love to get to 150,000, which is less than 9,000 more to go! Thanks for helping out our school and the environment by collecting bottle caps.

To help us: Please clean them, count them, and put the total number of caps plus name on the outside of the bag or inside on a slip of paper. Ensure they are counted so the student can be recognized for it.

1st Grade:

All first grade students and their parents are dedicated to reading during the month of March as our Parade of Readers revs into full swing!  We are challenging everyone to meet their first goal of 30 books, then to set their next goal for the number of books they want to read during the 5 week program. You are invited to walk through the first grade hall to watch our chains grow longer each week as we work toward our individual goals.  Thank you, parents, for your support. It's great to watch the love for reading bloom this spring.

2nd Grade:
Second graders are busy this month reading great books and writing summaries in our Book Camp journals. We are also learning to add and subtract money in Math class. In Science, we are learning about weather and the water cycle. In Social Studies, we are learning about our nation's past. March is a busy month!

4th Grade:

4th graders attended the symphony on March 1. They are going to Nature's Classroom in Mentone, Alabama on April 24-26. A camp informational meeting will be held in the library from 6:00-7:00 pm on Tuesday, March 12.

5th Grade:

Fifth grade students put a modern twist on Black History Month! Students designed a Facebook page of a famous African American. Students were given a template and directions to include pictures and factual information. They then had to discern the most important information and display it in their own way. They even had to research "friends" of their person and display it on the page.

Playground:  2nd-5th grade students are enjoying their new tire swing in the playground!

Tardies:  A tardy is accepted as excused with a doctor's note, however, arrivals after 8:00 am are still counted as tardy.

From Your Art Teacher

 Jehanna Branch

Congratulations to Emma Saunders and Anya Schappell of Mrs. Romero's class. Their watercolors were submitted and selected for exhibition for Youth Art Month (YAM) at the Huntsville Museum of Art.  The YAM exhibit will be held at the museum from March 9-April 13, 2014. Great work girls!!

Students are currently working on the following art projects at HCES:

Fourth and Fifth grade have been doing two projects based on Optical Illusions. In the first project we looked at different optical illusions and artwork by M.C. Escher. Students created the illusion of movement by using lines to surround their name. The second project students are creating "Op Art Shading Blobs".  The lesson uses repetition of line but the illusion is created by shading in each blob with colored pencils and color pattern of choice.

Third and Second grade are in the process of finishing the "Crazy Hair" projects. This project combines the shape and pattern techniques used in previous lessons such as Warm/ Cool Hands and Zen Drawing.  Students use their creativity to make the craziest hair designs imaginable.

Kindergarten and First grade have recently completed "Kandinsky Circles".  This was a two- part lesson that introduced students to Wassily Kandinsky's very colorful abstract paintings.  We talked about the difference between realistic and abstract pictures. This lesson allowed students to practiced drawing concentric circles using oil pastels.

Pre-K students are also learning about Kandinsky paintings. Students viewed examples and tried to find as many shapes as they could.  We then practiced drawing shapes with oil pastels and later painted over with tempera paints.  Tempera paints are really awesome to use over oil pastels because the oil pastels resist the paint.  The students are able to see their drawings through the layers of paint.

Please contact HCES Art Teacher Jehanna Branch with any questions.

First Aid for Seizures

About 300,000 American children and adolescents have seizure disorders. Thanks to medications that prevent or reduce the frequency of seizures, most children are able to participate fully in school activities. However, seizures can and do occur at school. Non-convulsive seizures produce a dazed state and automatic behavior. The common symptoms are blank staring, chewing, fumbling, wandering, shaking, confused speech. Students previously diagnosed with this type of seizure usually do not require treatment other than observation, remaining with and keeping the student safe until it ends and full consciousness has returned.

Generalized tonic-clonic seizures, convulsions or grand mal seizures are the most easily recognizable. First aid for these seizures is basically simple. Following are the key things to remember:

*Stay calm and reassure people who are nearby

*Keep onlookers away.

*Don't hold the person down or try to stop his movements.

*Prevent injury by moving any objects out of the way.

*Loosen any clothing, etc around the neck that may make breathing difficult.

*Turning the person on their side will help keep the airway open.

*Put something soft, like a folded jacket under their head.

*Do not put anything in the person's mouth.

*Time the length of the seizure and call for emergency help if it lasts more than 5 minutes or the

person has never had a seizure.

*Stay with the person until the seizure ends and consciousness has returned.

* Be friendly, reassuring and supportive as consciousness returns.

Most previously diagnosed seizures usually last only a few minutes. Following these simple steps will help keep the person safe until the seizure stops by itself.

Come Dine With Us!

HCES/HCMS Cafeteria

Breakfast: 7:30 - 8:00 am
Lunch:
10:30 am - 12:30 pm

The HCES/HCMS Cafeteria will be emailing charge letters as a way to save costs for the cafeteria/school system, and we will try to get these letters out once per week on Wednesdays. You can send cash, check or pay online (if you choose) to clear up your child's charges. If you pay online and you are asked for the "STUDENT ID" this is your child's Social Security Number (different from the student's lunch number that is entered at school), without the dashes. Please note that you will be charged a fee to pay online. The cafeteria's recommendation is therefore to just send the cash or check with your student, as sometimes the online system will take up to three (3) days to deposit payments into your child's account. Cindy Green may update the system immediately upon receipt of cash or check.

See the city's lunch menus (including two months ahead of the current month) on the HCS Child Nutrition web page.

If you have any questions concerning your child's lunch account please contact HCES/HCMS Cafeteria Manager Mrs. Cindy Green at 256.428.7186.  Have a safe and happy Spring Break!

Dragon Box Algebra

This program is a fun way for children (and adults) to learn about algebra through colorful cartoon characters, other items and ultimately, letters. DragonBox Algebra 5+ (recommended for ages 5+) is an introduction and DragonBox Algebra 12+ (recommended for ages 12+) is a more advanced introductory lesson. Both applications are available for Apple products at a cost of approximately $6.00 and $10.00, respectively.

Moby Max

Moby Max has a differentiated curriculum with progress monitoring. With the help of diagnostic placement tests, MobyMax is able to create a unique curriculum foreach student. Moby targets areas where students are struggling and doesn't waste time reteaching concepts that students have already mastered. Student data is continually updated as students progress, so you know exactly how each student is performing on all standards in the common core.

HCS Rezoning Plan & Schools Update

Huntsville City Schools has been under a desegregation order for the last 40 years. The district has been working for the past several years to satisfy many "green factors" outlined by the Department of Justice (DOJ) to have the order removed and achieve unitary status. One of the green factors left to tackle is student assignments through changing our school zone lines. Huntsville City Schools created a rezoning plan and submitted it to the DOJ. The maps were presented in January in a specially session of the School Board. You can view the presentation.

It was explained in the meeting that the DOJ had reviewed the plan and responded with a separate plan. The district cannot release the details of the DOJ plan due to a confidentiality agreement. The district is currently negotiating with the Department of Justice to come to an agreement on the new rezoning plan.

There are many unknowns about how long this process will take.  The district's attorney feels that it will be months not years.  Dr. Wardynski stated that no changes to the zone lines will take place next year.

The school district hosted community meetings at six high schools in January and February.  Please see the HCS website for the latest information on this case.

The new zone lines impact many schools. Keep in mind the plan presented by Huntsville City Schools is the "proposed" plan. It has not been accepted by the DOJ.

Huntsville Afterschool Labs

Huntsville Afterschool Labs launched in the Huntsville City Schools on Monday, February 3, 2014. The District, along with Appleton Learning, will introduce students to a new extended learning experience. The new Program titled Huntsville City Schools' Afterschool Labs will offer students access to fun recreational games, hands-on STEM activities, assistance with homework and studying, tutoring when needed, and popular extracurricular activities.  The new program was approved at a recnt Huntsville City Schools' Board of Education meeting.

The Huntsville City Schools Extended Day program currently operates in 19 sites through the District and provides safe and affordable after-school care for roughly one thousand children daily.

Recently, Huntsville City Schools engaged Appleton Learning to evaluate the Program in an effort to identify opportunities for expansion and improvement commensurate with the caliber of educational programs characteristic of Huntsville City Schools.  During the course of the evaluation process, the opportunities that were identified centered around the idea of transitioning the existing Extended Day Program to a true extended learning environment by incorporating fun, hands-on activities, homework and academic assistance, and access to extracurricular activities such as dance, music, and karate.

Huntsville City Schools' Afterschool Labs Program will leverage the existing facilities and structure provided by the District and the professional instructional services provided by Appleton Learning to deliver the type of afterschool program desired by the parents, students, and school leaders.

Huntsville City Schools' Afterschool Labs, powered by Appleton will offer parents and students access to the most cutting edge afterschool experiences available and will enable Huntsville City Schools to become a leader in extended learning.

Parents/guardians who currently do not have a child enrolled, but would like to learn more about Huntsville City Schools' new Afterschool Labs offerings can also visit HuntsvilleAfterschool.com. Inquiries may be directed to 256-382-1057 or info@huntsvilleafterschool.com

There is currently a bill in the Alabama State Senate, State Bill 380, calling for the revocation of the Alabama College and Career Ready Standards. It also forbids any changes to our standards until 2017. There is also a bill in the works that would give each local school system the ability to opt out of standards adopted by the State Board of Education. Both bills would change the authority of the Alabama State Board of Education.

Please contact your state senator to let them know how you feel about these bills. Not sure who your state senator is? Please visit this link to find out: http://www.legislature.state.al.us/misc/zipsearch.html

Community Partner Spotlight: Mathnasium

At Mathnasium, we "make math make sense." Because children all learn differently, Mathnasium takes a customized approach to build students' skills from wherever they are starting. Every student starts our program by taking a comprehensive math skills assessment. We use those results to build an individualized curriculum where every child has their own one-of-a-kind binder with work that supports their challenges and enhances their strengths.

With understanding comes confidence. When children understand math, confidence grows, attitudes improve, and they enjoy engaging in math. As the school year winds down and end of the year grades pressure starts, Mathnasium supports children with their math homework and dealing with stress. In addition, summer is fast approaching. During the summer we continue to build on classroom skills as well as look forward to the new school year and work on getting ahead. Also, new to this year, we will be offering a "game hour" and robotics activities. Students will have the option of attending morning or afternoon sessions June through July.

Walk for Autism

2014 Walk for Autism

Hampton Cove Schools Campus

Saturday, April 12

8:30am - 12:00pm

It is that time again.  We are working hard in preparation for the 2014 Walk for Autism.   The event will be held again this year at the Hampton Cove Schools on Saturday, April 12 from 8:30 am until 12:00 pm.

There are several ways to be involved in raising awareness of autism and to help raise funds for the Autism Society of Alabama.

  • Registering for the Walk - $30 per person - www.walkforautismal.com -team Hampton Cove Hawks  ($35 day of)
  • Buying puzzle pieces ($1 each) at school - to be hung with child's name in school
  • Building a walk team - largest team prize available again this year
  • Volunteering to help on the day of the Walk

As many of you know that this event and cause are close to my heart. I have been working with the Autism Society of Alabama for 9 years to raise awareness and funds.  I have a 5th grader this year at Hampton Cove Elementary.  Many of you know Jack Morris.  He is an amazing kid with Autism. We have been blessed to be at this wonderful school surrounded by sweet, kind and tolerant children, your children.  As a parent of a special needs child I couldn't be happier with his education and the community that surrounds him every day.  The parents in Hampton Cove are doing a wonderful job of raising kids that realize not everyone is the same.  I am proud to say I live in Hampton Cove.

Our city, which is grossly affected by this Neurological disorder, is becoming aware of the times ahead of us, realizing that we have to support the Autism Community.  These children, teenagers and adults on the Spectrum are part of OUR COMMUNITY.  We have to include them, teach them and educate them as our own.  They will do great things.

If you have any questions or thoughts feel free to contact Jenny Morris.

Sincerely,

Jenny Morris
