I hope everyone is enjoying summer break!
It was such a great year at Hampton Cove Elementary School! We couldn't have done it without some key people. First, I would like to thank Mr. Landers for an incredible job well done! What an exciting place it is at HCES. Our students are learning, growing and having fun. There is an air of happiness and success and we look forward to great things ahead!
A huge thank you to the PTA board members for all of their hard work this year! Thanks to them we have wonderful programs for our kids to enjoy. A special word of appreciation to Kellie Salvo-Sanger. Kellie served as the fundraising chair and has been in charge of our book fairs for several years. Kellie is rotating off the board but will still work with the book fairs! And welcome to Toni Wessells, who is taking Kellie's place on the board. We look forward to working with Toni.
Keep your eyes out for orientation dates and times for the 2013-2014 school year. We will send those electronically as soon as they are confirmed. It will be a great year as Mr. Landers and the faculty work to earn Blue Ribbon recognition for HCES!
Enjoy your summer and we'll see you in August!

Principal's Letter
|
This has truly been an outstanding school year at Hampton Cove Elementary. At the beginning of the academic year, our leadership team, faculty, and staff set several lofty goals. We believed we could "benchmark" 98% of our students in math and 96% of our students in reading. I have stated these aspirations at all of our PTA meetings, in all of our faculty meetings, in all of our data level meetings, at principal meetings, in my newsletter articles, and to anyone else who would listen throughout the school year. It gives me great pleasure to report that HCES met both these goals during the spring administration of the STAR Assessment. HCES ranked 1st in the system in math (tied with Goldsmith Schiffman Elementary) and 1st in the system in reading! These rankings are a manifestation of the excellent instruction offered by our faculty, and the hard work of the students and parents. My congratulations to everyone for a job well done!
Another area the STAR Assessment measures is how our students rank according to other students across the nation who took the exam. These comparisons are expressed in percentile scores. In math, the mean percentile score for HCES was 91. This means that our school scored as well as or better than 91% of the students from across the country who took the test. This was the highest score in the Huntsville district. Another way of looking at it is that this score ranks us in the top 9% of schools in the country! Our mean percentile score in reading was 83. This was also the highest score in Huntsville and ranks us in the top 17% of schools in the country. We are so proud of these scores and celebrate these successes with our HCES family, our community, and our district.
As part of our end of the year luncheon, we recognized the achievements of our faculty and staff this academic year. Special recognition went to two grade levels and two individual teachers who had the highest SGP's at our school. SGP is the Student Growth Percentile that measures the growth of our students throughout the year. An SGP of 40-55 indicates a student has grown a full grade level during the year. Our third grade team of Mrs. Watson, Mrs. Ethridge, Mrs. Holcomb, and Mrs. Burwell led the school in reading with an SGP of 73! Mrs. Burwell's class led the entire school with a score of 83! Her score was also one of the highest scores in the district. Our second grade team of Mr. Miller, Mrs. Bell, Mrs. Stewart, and Mrs. Brumlow led the school in math with an SGP of 79! Mrs. Bell's class led the entire school with a score of 84! Her score was also one of the highest scores in the district! Each of these grade level teams, Mrs. Burwell, and Mrs. Bell received trophies to honor their accomplishments. Congratulations to all!
Our main office will be open each day from 8:00-3:30 p.m. through Friday, June 14. The office will close from Monday, June 17 through Friday, July 12, and reopen on Monday, July 15. As always, you can contact me at 256-428-7180, or through the school website. Best wishes for an enjoyable and relaxing summer! Be safe, have fun, encourage your children to take part in our summer reading program, and we will see you in August.

HCPTAs Character Counts Contest |
Character Counts
It is going to be a SUPER SUMMER where CHARACTER COUNTS! The Huntsville Council of PTAs in partnership with the Huntsville offices of the Better Business Bureau and the Huntsville City Schools Positive School Climate Committee, are sponsoring a contest for students who will be enrolled in a Huntsville City School in 2013-2014.The contest is modeled after Reflections, the fine arts program sponsored by National, State and Local PTAs.
|
What does an entry consist of? Reflections is the fine arts competition held by PTA every fall. Winners at the local level move on to state judging and winners at the state level move on to national judging. Huntsville City Schools has had numerous state and national winners in the past. We are a creative bunch! This contest is based on the Reflections model, however we will only be including two of the categories: literature and visual arts. For the purpose of the Character Counts contest, visual arts will include painting, drawing, and photography. Literature will consist of essays or poems, and should be 1-2 pages; typed, double spaced, with a 12 font size.
|
How does a student submit an entry?
The entry form can be found on the Huntsville Council of PTAs website under the SUPER SUMMER tab. CLICK HERE to download the form. Entries can be scanned and emailed to Huntsville PTA at huntsvillepta@gmail.com, or they can be dropped off in a SUPER SUMMER box at the Huntsville Madison Library. We are working on more drop-off locations, so stay tuned!
|
What are the age groups? We have five categories for our participants. They are also modeled after Reflections. All the age groups indicate the rising grade, the grade on the first day of school, August 20, 2013. Primary - pre K-2 Elementary - 3-5 Middle 6-8 High School - 9-12 There is also a category for Special Artist for those students of all ages who have an IEP and are receiving Special Education services.
|
Who are the judges?
Judges are from all areas of the community. We will have military personnel, doctors, seated judges, fire fighters, police officers, the business community, and maybe even an astronaut or two, judge the entries.
|
What are the prizes? The top entry in each age category will receive a medal and certificate to be presented at the summer school board meetings. There will also be drawings from all the weekly entries where we will be giving away fun summer activities for families. At the end of the summer there will be a grand prize drawing from the all of the entries submitted. Winners of the essay and visual art contest will be notified through email or phone based on the information given on the entry form, so make sure it is correct. We will also announce our winners on our Facebook page and website.
|
When do we start?
NOW! Deadlines for submission for all the character words will be on Fridays throughout the summer. Below are all the character word groupings and their deadlines: May 31 - Honesty & Integrity Jun 7 - Diligence & Perseverance Jun 14 - Generosity & Compassion Jun 21 - Patience & Self Control Jun 28 - Citizenship & Patriotism Jul 5 - Self Respect, Respect for Others & Tolerance Jul 12 - Creativity & Courage Jul 19 - Courtesy & Cooperation Jul 26 - Punctuality & Loyalty Aug 1 - Cleanliness & Respect for Environment Aug 9 - Cheerfulness & Kindness Aug 16 - School Pride & Sportsmanship

HCES PTA Summer Reading Program
|
Join Hampton Cove Elementary's
Summer 2013 Reading Program
What's the best way to help your child succeed in school and in life?
That's right, READ! Read to your child early and often! Reading together helps build vocabulary and literacy skills, boosts listening comprehension, and sparks imagination!
Take a trip to the library or bookstore this summer and encourage your child to pick up a good book! It's fun, and something you and your child can do together!
Hampton Cove Elementary's Summer Reading Program
Friday, May 24 through Sunday, August 18
How does your child participate?
* Record minutes read on the HCES Summer Reading Log that came home on the last day of school.
* Turn the HCES Summer Reading Log into your child's 2013-2014 HCES teacher by Friday, August 23.
* The reading goal for all participating grades (K-5) is 20 minutes per day of grade-level
material. You may read more, or you may read less. The goal is 20 minutes per day
or 140 minutes per week. Note: this reading program is optional and participation is not
required, only suggested.
* All students who turn in their reading log, regardless of the number of minutes
read will be invited to celebrate their achievement with Mr. Landers. Students
who meet or exceed that goal will receive additional recognition!
* Grade-level reading suggestions and the HCES Summer Reading Log will be made
available on the HCES website.
If you would like to help with the program or have questions, please contact Jeanne Kruza.

Help Wanted - Reading Programs |
Call for Reading Volunteers!
We need co-chairs and committee members for Book Camp Club, our genre reading program. We are making some exciting changes in this program this year! Students will focus on writing about books they read from the different genres and will earn dog tags to wear on a chain instead of patches to sew on a shirt. The co-chairs will work closely with Reading Coach Pam Barnes and Librarian Suzi Ellett, as well as PTA Board Academic Support V.P. Elena Barbre. If you're interested in helping or want to learn more, please contact Elena Barbre at ebarbre@comcast.net.
We also need a co-chair and committee members to help Jeanne Kruza with our new HCES PTA summer reading program, including planning and preparing for our recognition ceremony in the fall. Please contact Jeanne at jeanne.kruza@gmail.com if you're interested in learning more.

Help Wanted - Grandparents Breakfast 2013
|
Call for Grandparents Breakfast
Chair/Co-chairs!
Grandparents, like heroes, are as necessary to a child's growth as vitamins.
~Joyce Allston
Grandparents hold a very special place in the heart of a child! And, that is one of the reasons that Hampton Cove Elementary honors grandparents each year with our Grandparents' Breakfasts. This coming school year (2013-14), the breakfasts are scheduled for:
Thursday, September 5: Pre-K - 2nd grade
Friday, September 6: 3rd - 5th grade
7:00-8:00 am
HCES Cafeteria
The HCES PTA is looking for a person(s) to coordinate these important breakfasts for the upcoming school year! It's actually a fairly straightforward event - we have all the details/ordering/setup from previous years - and even if you work, but still want to be involved - this event may work with your schedule since it concludes early each morning. Please, please consider volunteering for this very important event for our kids and grandparents -- they all LOVE it!
Anyone interested, please contact Missy Logan, VP Membership, at missyandbrent@comcast.net or 256.415.0994.

Staff Retirement |

Best Wishes to Mrs. Nan Freeman
HCES 5th Grade Teacher
We want to say best wishes to one of our fifth grade teachers, Nan Freeman, on her retirement. Nan has been a longtime employee of Huntsville City Schools and has been at HCES since its opening in 1996. She taught fifth grade and was an integral part of the grade level. She taught all subjects, with Social Studies being her specialty. We will always be reminded of her when the fifth graders present their annual Colonial Fair. Not only did she earn a master's degree, but she also earned her National Board Certification. Nan will enjoy her retirement with her husband Gary, her three daughters, and her six grandchildren.

Financial Update
|
Thanks to the success of the Support Our Students (SOS) program, our generous Community Partners, book fairs and other events, and excellent stewardship of so many volunteers throughout the year, the PTA will end the year with a comfortable bank balance. Remaining funds will be carried over and appropriated for the next school year. The PTA Board will begin working on next year's budget this summer, and the membership will vote on that budget at the first meeting of the 2013-2014 school year.
As expected, most of 2012-2013 budget went towards academic support. The PTA provides the HCES computer teacher's salary, and we offer each teacher up to $350 for classroom supplies. Including some special large purchases to improve the HCES Library, we spent roughly $60,000 on academic support this year. That is money that has a direct, tangible impact on the education of our children.
Thank you to all of our members who support the work of the PTA. If you have comments or suggestions about the budget for next year, please feel free to contact Stephanie Ortel.

Box Tops for Education
|
Please continue saving Box Tops, and if you have any that will expire over the summer, these may be turned in to the office (see office schedule in the calendar above), and the Box Tops Committee will submit them.
|
Bottle Caps
|
 Please Continue Collecting Bottle Caps
this Summer!
Caps collected over the summer may be turned in once school starts again in August. Although this city-wide contest doesn't officially begin until October 2013, by saving early we can get a jump start on our collection. We would like to surpass HCES' 2012-2013 collection of 100,000 bottle caps by collecting an additional 50,000-100,000 caps during the 2013-2014 collection.
*Caps must be clean plastic, screw or twist-off type with no metal. Examples are caps from plastic bottles of juice, milk, ketchup, laundry detergent, water, soda, peanut butter, shampoo, etc.

Clinic News
|
Floyd Broussard
To best meet your child's needs during the 2013-2014 school year, it is imperative that the Student Health Assessment Form (green sheet) and Student Emergency Record (white card) be completed fully and returned to HCMS/HCES at the beginning of the school year. Please pay close attention to the Medical Alert Information. If your child has or has had a history of asthma, seizures, allergy, heart or other organ system condition, hypoglycemia, fainting, or other potentially health threatening conditions, please make us aware by filling in this section. If your student's time is divided between different residences, please list the contacts in the order they are to be contacted.
Per HCS policy, if your child has asthma, diabetes, epilepsy, or severe allergy to food or insects, a Student Specific Emergency Plan and other forms will need to be on file in the clinic. This requires physician and parent documentation and signatures. All health information will be held confidential, available only to personnel who are directly involved in the management of your child's medical needs.
If your child is on medication that needs to be given at school, a School Medication Prescriber/Parent Authorization Form must be on file in the clinic. This requires physician documentation and physician and parent signatures. Please remember, the school nurse cannot and will not accept any medication without the properly completed forms. All medication must be brought to school by a parent or legal guardian. DO NOT send any medication to school with your child. It will be confiscated and a parent will be called to retrieve the medication. Except for prescribed emergency medications, students are not allowed to have medication in their possession. If medication is needed on field trips, medication authorization forms will be required for each medication sent. Students with medications already in the clinic have the appropriate forms. Out of county and/or overnight student field trips will require a notarized Out of County/Overnight Student Trip Medical Release Form.
Medication in the clinic must be picked up at the end of the school year by a parent/guardian or authorized adult. Medication not picked up on or before the last day of school will be destroyed in accordance with federal and state guidelines. Medication and medication authorization forms must be renewed yearly.
Blue Cards must be current and up to date prior to the beginning of the school year. An extra Tdap is required for children entering the 6th grade. Periodically throughout the year, the staff will monitor your child's immunization record. If you are notified that your child's card needs to be updated, please take the notice to your physician or the Madison County Health Department for the needed immunization. Information on state-required yearly scoliosis and vision screening will be provided later in the year.
All forms are available online at the HCS website, at the school's front office, and in the clinic. Further information is available in the HCS Official Student-Parent Handbook received by parents yearly. Forms for the 2013-2014 school year were provided when you picked up your student's medication.

Did you know you can see the International Space Station (ISS) from your house? As the third brightest object in the sky, after the sun and moon, the space station is easy to see if you know where and when to look for it.
NASA's Spot the Station service sends you an email or text message a few hours before the space station passes over your house. The space station looks like a fast-moving plane in the sky, though one with people living and working aboard it is more than 200 miles above the ground. It is best viewed on clear nights.
To sign up for the free messages and to learn more about the ISS, visit: http://spotthestation.nasa.gov/. This is a fun activity to do with your kids, especially on a warm summer night!
