Greetings for the final time of the 2012-2013 school year. I can't believe I'm saying that already. I've talked with so many friends who are excited the end of the school year is here and summer is upon us. I actually find this time of year to be bittersweet. Yes, I look forward to summer; but it also means another of the few precious years that I have with my children is gone.
I want to take this opportunity to thank the PTA membership for considering and approving the recent changes to the HCES PTA By-laws. These amendments were voted on and approved at the Tuesday, April 16 PTA meeting. The changes will now be incorporated into the by-laws and updated with the Alabama PTA this summer.
As we say goodbye to the year, we also say "Happy Retirement" to one of Hampton Cove Elementary School's 5th-grade teachers, Nan Freeman. Mrs. Freeman has taught at HCES since the doors first opened in 1998. She will spend time with her husband at the lake and enjoy more time with her six grandchildren.
Ready. Set. Go! The home stretch of this year is going to be a busy one, so please pay special attention to the calendar of events in this newsletter. First up next week is end-of-the-year testing. There will be few activities scheduled during the two weeks of testing, so please make sure your students go to bed early and eat good, protein filled breakfasts! I would also like to point out that the Teacher Appreciation Luncheon has moved to Wednesday, May 22. More information on that will come through Room Mom communications.
Please note the invitation in this newsletter for the PTA Volunteer Celebration set for Monday, May 20 at noon. The celebration will be held following Spring Fling, so if you have volunteered in any capacity this year, please plan on attending this event in your honor.
Keep your eyes on the HCES website and emails from the school over the summer. We will forward information regarding the new school year through these avenues of communication.
Until then, have a great summer and enjoy the time with your children and the rest of your family!
If you have any questions or concerns, please don't hesitate to contact me at seanandcindi@bellsouth.net.

Principal's Letter

As the school year moves from April into May, it seems as if all things begin to accelerate at exponential speed. May is an essential month for learning at HCES as we complete the coverage of our standards, review those standards covered earlier in the year, and administer our STAR, ARMT+, and the new ACT Aspire. May is also filled with celebrations and parties as we recognize the accomplishments of our students and the contributions made by our educational family. May is hectic, fun, rewarding, and heralds the coming of summer.
Our third and fourth graders are essentially done with their STAR tests, except for make-ups. First and fifth graders tackle STAR this week and second graders are "on deck" the week of May 6. Our K and PK are also getting in on the excitement and will be participating in the STAR Early Literacy exam over the next two weeks. Our students have realized great success on this reading and math exam this year, and we have no doubt their hard work will manifest in outstanding scores during this last administration. Please encourage them to do their best (many times they want to rush through the test), make sure your children get a good night's sleep, and make sure they are at school and ready to go by eight o'clock each morning. Attendance is particularly important this month as there are important things going on every day. Please communicate with us when there are unavoidable absences.
Our third, fourth, and fifth graders will begin the ARMT+ (Alabama Reading and Math Test) on May 6, and the testing window continues through May 14. This reading and math test (and science for fifth graders) is entirely a pencil and paper test and will begin each morning just after the last bell (8:00 am). Students are not permitted to enter the classroom after the test has begun, so punctuality is essential. Testing sessions will be completed by lunch each day, so out-of-school appointments should be limited to the afternoon.
The ACT Aspire exams (yes, the same ACT that does college entrance exams) are scheduled for May 15-17 for Grades 3-5. This is a very tight testing window and all exams need to be completed during those three days. The ACT Aspire exams vary in length from 20-45 minutes and cover English, math, reading, science, and writing. The ACT Aspire will be completed on laptops or in the computer lab. We are piloting this exam, so data will be used for means testing and give us a good idea where we are with the Alabama College and Career Ready Standards. It will also give us a good "first look" at what our exams will look like next year as the ARMT is replaced with this new generation of tests.
After the testing windows have closed, all student and teacher computers will be collected for reimaging and repair over the summer. Our computer collections will begin on the afternoon of May 20 and continue through May 23. Third through fifth grade students will be asked to return their device, bag, and charger. It is very important that each student's bag be tagged with the student's name, grade, and teacher. These tags were provided at the beginning of the school year. After reimaging, student computers will be returned to HCES around the middle of July and redistributed to students before the beginning of the 2013-2014 school year. Second and third graders will receive their "new" computers around the first of August. As you can see, the last week of school is very important, and it is our expectation that all students will be in attendance through May 23.
We will have our Kindergarten orientation (K for a day) on May 16. This day is set aside for all incoming Kindergartners for the 2013-2014 school year. There will be two sessions in the library, one at 8:30 am and one at 9:45 am, and parents will be notified as to which session to attend. We will have a general meeting with parents while our rising Kindergartners meet with the teachers and complete a few diagnostic activities. We will then reunite the parents and students for a tour of the Kindergarten classrooms and points of interest. It should be a very exciting day! At the general session, parents of new Kindergarten students to HCES will be asked to reserve a time on May 22 and May 23 for their little one to come back to school to take the STAR Early Literacy Assessment in our computer lab. This assessment will help us determine the best educational plan for next year and should take 15-20 minutes to administer. We will be happy to share the results with you.
Summer is such an important time in the educational process of our students. It is so essential that the learning process continue throughout the summer. Each grade-level team will provide summer educational opportunities, books to read, computer programs to access, and suggestions for summer activities to make sure we don't lose our "competitive edge" over the summer holidays. This will be a big help when we "hit the ground running" next August.
This has been such an exciting and rewarding year for us at Hampton Cove Elementary. We have taken the first steps on our journey to becoming a world class school. Next year, as we get into the Blue Ribbon process and continue to fine tune the Digital 1:1 Initiative, we will begin to take our rightful spot as one of the premier elementary schools in the nation and in the world. Our children deserve nothing less!
Please let me know if you have questions or if I can help in any way. I am available by phone or email, and always love the opportunity to meet with you in person. |

Spring Fling

Spring Fling
Monday, May 20
8:30 am - 11:30 am
All grades will participate during this time period, however, the grades will be rotating through the games. Parents and guardians are encouraged to attend, however, we ask for two things in order for the event and our school to run smoothly on the day of the event:
- Wait outside of your child's classroom before walking with the class to their first event
- Please do not bring younger siblings to Spring Fling. The activities are for HCES students only.
This "field day" is always such a fun event for the students, and we need many volunteers on that day to help us with safety and supervision. If you can help on this day - even an hour or two, please contact Lynn Brady at: lbrady@comcast.net.
We also need approximately ten volunteers to help us bag up the popcorn for the students on Sunday, May 19 at 2:00 pm. Spring Fling runs more smoothly if the popcorn is pre-bagged prior to the event. Please mark your calendars and contact Lynn Brady if you can help on this day.
Thank You!

Financial Update

Thanks to the success of the Support Our Students program, our generous Community Partners, book fairs and other events, and excellent stewardship of so many volunteers throughout the year, the PTA will end the year with a comfortable bank balance. Remaining funds will be carried over and appropriated for the next school year. The PTA Board will begin working on next year's budget this summer, and the membership will vote on that budget at the first meeting of the 2013-2014 school year.
As expected, most of 2012-2013 budget went towards academic support. The PTA provides the computer teacher's salary, and we offer each teacher up to $350 for classroom supplies. Including some special large purchases to improve the HCES Library, we spent roughly $60,000 on academic support this year. That is money that has a direct, tangible impact on the education of our children.
Thank you to all of our members who support the work of the PTA. If you have comments or suggestions about the budget for next year, please feel free to contact Stephanie Ortel.

Bottle Caps

Our school collected
110,506
bottle caps this school year, and we surpassed our goal by 10,000 caps! On April 30, several PTA Board members and students attended a reception to honor local schools that collected bottle caps this school year. For our efforts, Hampton Cove Elementary was presented with a check for $500! Thanks to Operation Green Team for sponsoring the reception, and to Boeing for contributing $16,000 in prize money.
Do you know why we collect caps? It is because they cannot be recycled in our blue bins. Instead, Operation Green Team picks them up at local schools where they are collected and puts them on a Republic truck traveling to Troy, Alabama. The caps are then turned into paint cans for Lowes and Home Depot! All of the schools who participate are entered in a competition to see which school can collect the most, so collecting caps helps our environment and earns money for our school. It is a WIN-WIN!
So please don't stop collecting those caps. You can still turn them in to the two drop locations all school year. One is outside Mrs. Sonia Parker's room (towards the end of the 5th grade hallway) and the other is outside the lunchroom. You can even collect caps over the summer to turn in once we get back to school. Keep those caps coming so we can get a jump start on our collection for the citywide contest next year!
*Caps must be clean plastic, screw or twist-off type with no metal. Examples are caps from plastic bottles of juice, milk, ketchup, laundry detergent, water, soda, peanut butter, shampoo, etc.

Thank You

A very special THANK YOU to our amazing principal, Mr. Ray Landers. You came into a school that was tired from so many transitions and helped it find its way back into a thriving, beautiful place. Thank you for breathing life back into HCES. Your energy, excitement, passion, and vision are so welcome and appreciated!
Anonymous would like to THANK Lucinda Johnson, Cindi Williamson, and Betsy O'Halloran and their committees for all of their work on the recent Sock Hop.
Anonymous would like to THANK Jeanne Kruza and Sharon Stephenson for their great work on the front lobby and bulletin board this year. Your efforts really helped to brighten up our school this year!
Anonymous would also like to THANK Debbie Tetrault and her committee for an outstanding job on the monthly newsletter each month. All of your hours editing and re-editing to keep us informed is so appreciated.

Without the PTA Board there would be no PTA Welcome Packets, Grandparents Breakfast, Teacher Luncheons, Book Fairs, Fall Festival, Sock Hop, Math Superstars, Book Club, After-school activities, and SO many more activities that the PTA plans throughout the school year.
Elena Barbre would like to THANK Trisha Carter for the great job she did organizing this year's library volunteers and the extra effort she made to accommodate individuals' needs in creating the monthly library schedule. Her positive energy and willingness to help are much appreciated!

Debbie Tetrault would like to THANK Kindergarten teacher Sharon Lakin for consistently submitting Kindergarten articles for the HCES PTA Newsletter, and being one of the first to submit articles each month.
Debbie Tetrault would like to THANK Anita Beatty, Elena Barbre, Diana LaChance, and Missy Logan for all of their help in editing the HCES PTA Newsletter this school year.

Grandparents Breakfast 2013

Grandparents, like heroes, are as necessary to a child's growth as vitamins.
~Joyce Allston
Grandparents hold a very special place in the heart of a child! And, that is one of the reasons that Hampton Cove Elementary honors grandparents each year with our Grandparents' Breakfasts. This coming school year (2013-14), the breakfasts are scheduled for:
Thursday, September 5: Pre-K - 2nd grade
Friday, September 6: 3rd - 5th grade
7:00-8:00 am
HCES Cafeteria
The HCES PTA is looking for a person(s) to coordinate these important breakfasts for the upcoming school year! It's actually a fairly straightforward event - we have all the details/ordering/setup from previous years - and even if you work, but still want to be involved - this event may work with your schedule since it concludes early each morning. Please, please consider volunteering for this very important event for our kids and grandparents -- they all LOVE it!
Anyone interested, please contact Missy Logan, VP Membership, at missyandbrent@comcast.net or 256.415.0994.

School News

Kindergarten News: Hello from Kindergarten! Thank you for all of your support this year. We have had a year full of learning and growing both socially and academically. This month we continued learning how to read new sight words and consonant-vowel-consonant (CVC) words through our reading series and small group readers. Our writing continues to improve each day and we love to use our sight words in our written work. In math we learned about the attributes of flat shapes and solid figures and different ways to sort. In science we spent much time discussing Earth Day and how we can help keep the Earth clean. (We are so proud of our students and how well they did on their Earth Day PTA program. We hope you enjoyed their show!) In social studies we continued learning about transportation and the different geographic regions of the world. With only a few weeks left of our school year, we look forward to a wonderful end of the year!
1st Grade News: The first grade has been working on learning about the earth that we live on. We will be learning more about our country, its history and patriotism as we look forward to a field trip to the Folk Life Festival at Constitution Village. We will learn about American landmarks as each class shares their findings in a patriotic program for the parents.
2nd Grade News: Second grade has been using some new technology this quarter with the ScootPad website along with incorporating more apps into the daily instruction. We've been learning about our country and its history in Social Studies, and about sound and weather in science. The students are getting ready to make the big leap into third grade!
Cafeteria: The last day to charge (exceed the amount in the lunch account) lunches or breakfast in the cafeteria was on Friday, April 19. All charges need to be cleared before Thursday, May 23, 2013. Note: money may be added to the account through the end of the school year, and will be carried over into the next school year if there is still unused money in the account on May 23.
May menus may be accessed through the Huntsville City Schools website. If you have any questions, please contact Tarsha Surles, HCES Cafeteria Manager or Joseph Vaughn, HCS Child Nutrition Program at (256)428-6957.
Maintenance: If you see anything at our school which requires repair work, please let Teri Pape or Mr. Landers know, so that one of our office staff can put a work order in to have this item replaced or repaired.

Clinic News

Floyd Broussard
To best meet your child's needs during the 2013-2014 school year, it is imperative that the Student Health Assessment Form (green sheet) and Student Emergency Record (white card) be completed fully and returned to HCMS/HCES at the beginning of the school year. Please pay close attention to the Medical Alert Information. If your child has or has had a history of asthma, seizures, allergy, heart or other organ system condition, hypoglycemia, fainting, or other potentially health threatening conditions, please make us aware by filling in this section. If your student's time is divided between different residences, please list the contacts in the order they are to be contacted.
Per HCS policy, if your child has asthma, diabetes, epilepsy, or severe allergy to food or insects, a Student Specific Emergency Plan and other forms will need to be on file in the clinic. This requires physician and parent documentation and signatures. All health information will be held confidential, available only to personnel who are directly involved in the management of your child's medical needs.
If your child is on medication that needs to be given at school, a School Medication Prescriber/Parent Authorization Form must be on file in the clinic. This requires physician documentation and physician and parent signatures. Please remember, the school nurse cannot and will not accept any medication without the properly completed forms. All medication must be brought to school by a parent or legal guardian. DO NOT send any medication to school with your child. It will be confiscated and a parent will be called to retrieve the medication. Except for prescribed emergency medications, students are not allowed to have medication in their possession. If medication is needed on field trips, medication authorization forms will be required for each medication sent. Students with medications already in the clinic have the appropriate forms. Out of county and/or overnight student field trips will require a notarized Out of County/Overnight Student Trip Medical Release Form.
Medication in the clinic must be picked up at the end of the school year by a parent/guardian or authorized adult. Medication not picked up on or before the last day of school will be destroyed in accordance with federal and state guidelines. Medication and medication authorization forms must be renewed yearly.
Blue Cards must be current and up to date prior to the beginning of the school year. An extra Tdap is required for children entering the 6th grade. Periodically throughout the year, the staff will monitor your child's immunization record. If you are notified that your child's card needs to be updated, please take the notice to your physician or the Madison County Health Department for the needed immunization. Information on state-required yearly scoliosis and vision screening will be provided later in the year.
All forms are available online at the HCS website, at the school's front office, and in the clinic. Further information is available in the HCS Official Student-Parent Handbook received by parents yearly. Forms for the 2013-2014 school year will be provided when you pick up your student's medication.

Walk for Autism
Event Update
I would like to extend a very special thank you to the Hampton Cove Community for your support of this year's Walk for Autism. With close to 2000 people in attendance, this year marked our largest event in Huntsville. While the tallying process is still underway, we expect to have raised over $50,000 that includes our sponsorship drive, registrations and puzzle piece promotions.
Special thanks to Hampton Cove Elementary and Middle School principals Mr. Ray Landers and Dr. Debi Edwards for allowing us promote our AWARENESS project in the schools.
In addition, thanks to Olivia and Trevor Cole for the hot dog and lemonade stand at Across the Pond. Not only did they raise awareness, they raised over $1,300! Thank you both so much.
HCES won the largest school team award. Thank you, Tracey Inman, for all of your hard work and enthusiasm.
This walk shines a much-needed light on the prevalence of autism, a neurological disorder that disproportionately affects our city's residents. Children, teenagers, and adults on the spectrum are part of our community and we need to support them, include them, teach them, and educate them as our own. With your help, and with events like the Autism Walk, we can.
Sincerely,
Jenny Morris
