Company Picnics

Normally by this time in July, the heat wave would have been going full force.  We've been lucky this summer - so you can't use the heat as an excuse for not attending your company picnic!

These types of events provide a great opportunity for some family fun - with your "home" family and your "work" family. Often times, however, people will be a bit tentative about how to behave at a company picnic - it's not quite like a company holiday party or a meeting in the conference room. So keep the following tips in mind as you pack up your suntan lotion - - and head to your company's summer picnic!

Tip #1:  Introduce yourself.  This isn't the time to lay out your towel, fall asleep in the sun, get terribly burned, and ignore everyone!  You have the opportunity to meet your company's management and leaders from other departments.  You can meet their "other halves" and their families - and they can meet yours.   Remember that spouses, kids and guests may feel uncomfortable not knowing anyone - almost like the 5th wheel.  So, do your best to make them feel welcome - introduce your kids to others, make sure to introduce your spouse or significant other to your boss and colleagues.

Tip #2:  Use the event - don't just survive it!  Whereas company holiday parties are often perceived as networking events, a company picnic truly should be a relaxed, no pressure, fun, family event.  So don't avoid meeting others - seek them out and look forward to safe, family fun with your "home" and "work" families together.

Is it Time to Ban Bossy?
Bossy or Leader?

By: PayScale Blogger, Evan Rodd, 04/07/14

Are women called Bossy more often than men? If so, what impact does that have on the overall picture of gender equality in leadership positions? The gender wage gap and women's roles in leadership are popular, and sadly sometimes polarizing topics of conversation. Recently there has been a lot of buzz regarding Sheryl Sandberg's Ban Bossy campaign, which is "a public service campaign to encourage leadership and achievement in girls."

The core messaging behind Ban Bossy asks us to take another look at gender bias in the work place. The campaign states that terms like "bossy" or "aggressive" are often used to describe women (especially women in leadership roles), while men are more often referred to as "decisive" and "strong-willed." The Ban Bossy website features several other examples and solutions for workplace gender bias, but there seems to be a lot of focus on whether or not we should make a conscious effort to re-evaluate or replace certain adjectives at work. The campaign has received accolades from celebrities like Beyoncé, but other have stated that too much of a focus on language can detract from the bigger pictures, and sometimes miss the true issue all together.
