Welcome from HR Strategy Group
After a few days of Indian summer, fall has arrived. As the temperature drops - so do the leaves. So while you watch them twirl to the ground, you can read through our monthly newsletter - - our main article this month, provided by guest author Cheryl Brown, Esq., discusses the hot topic of Social Media in the Workplace.
Our Compensation Corner gives you some insights on how to reduce PTO abuse - and I don't mean in your child's school system. "PTO" in this case stands for "paid time off."
Finally, in Spot Check, we offer information from the U.S. Small Business Administration on why you should perform background checks on potential new hires.
We are always available to support you and your organization's routine, and challenging, HR needs.
Happy Fall!
Best,
 Amy Polefrone, President

Social Media in the Worplace
By: Cheryl U. Brown, Esq. / Davis, Agnor, Rapaport, Skalny,LLC
Most recently, the dominant users of social media, Facebook, MySpace, Twitter and LinkedIn, are between the ages of 35-44. This increase in social media brings employers new opportunities as well as challenges. Social Media can be used as an effective tool to engage potential customers, clients, job candidates, and other business contacts as well as support professional and personal development. It is important for employers to maintain a balance of business development and employee relations with the employment issues of hiring, firing, supervision, communication and discipline.
In considering Social Media in the workplace, there are some basic legal limitations and duties for both employers and employees. If employers and employees follow and understand these basic guidelines, it will help guide appropriate discipline and response to the use of social media in the workplace.

How to Curb PTO Abuse & Reduce Absenteeism with Compensation Planning
By Tess Taylor, PayScale Blogger
Is your company's paid time off policy becoming a joke around the water cooler? Maybe you are noticing above average call-outs from employees for frivolous reasons? Perhaps no other human capital issue has the negative impact that frequently absent and sick employees create for a business.
For the smart HR leader, PTO abuse and high employee absenteeism rates signal problems that are deep within the core of the business itself. This can be an opportunity to take action and make positive changes in the compensation structure.
The Cost of PTO Abuse &Employee Absenteeism
When employees fail to report to work or take too many paid days off, obvious staffing shortages and lower productivity occur. Studies have shown that the total cost of frequent employee absence and paid time off abuse can range from 20 to 35 percent of the payroll budget.
