The Fort Worth Club

Program Title:
The Formula vs. The Art of 'The Ask'

How does one become comfortable asking for gifts?

How do you prioritize 'asking' versus 'the other tasks' we must do?

Is it a myth that there is a *formula* for when is the appropriate time to make 'The Ask' and is this myth intimidating to development professionals?

Presented by:

President's Message

July 2016

I joined AFP in 2006 because my boss at the time told me to join. I also joined the National Philanthropy Day (NPD) Luncheon committee because, once again, my boss told me to do it. That was in 2006 and today, without any boss telling me to, I have the honor of serving as President of our chapter.
In 2006, I was new to fundraising in Fort Worth. It took the encouragement of a supervisor for me to join an organization I knew little about but I could see would offer me insight into the fundraising world. I knew I wanted to be a fundraiser for years to come, even run my own organization one day, so I got involved with AFP. Through the years, I remained involved with NPD, even chairing the event one year. I moved around into different positions on the board, self-nominating myself most of the way, including checking the box saying "President-Elect."
As I hear so often, tell me what YOU want to do. If YOU don't self-nominate to join a place in our chapter leadership, how do we know you are interested? If YOU don't step up and join the DFW Philanthropy Conference Committee, how do we know you want to be part of one of the largest local philanthropy conferences in the US? If YOU don't join us at our monthly meetings, how do we know what interests you have regarding fundraising in our community?
Everything our chapter does relies on YOU!
The YOU that graduated college and knew that
fundraising was your calling.
The YOU that has been around fundraising for 30+ years.
The YOU that recently made a career change
and moved into the non-profit world.
The YOU from the corporate sector who works daily
with the non-profit world.
This email includes information regarding board nomination - I encourage you to step up.  Let's hear from YOU and what position YOU want to play in making our AFP Chapter a success in 2017.

Is AFP Board Service Calling Your Name?
We are planning for our chapter's future leadership.  Even though it's only June, we're already looking ahead to the 2017 chapter Board.  Serving on a chapter committee of the board of directors is a great way to network with other development professionals and sharpen your own leadership skills.

YOU, yes, YOU can be part of the leadership team that is the Fort Worth Metro AFP Board.  Also, let us know of others you think would be good additions to the 2017 Board.  If you have questions - we have answers!

Please download the nominating form.  Job descriptions for board positions can be reviewed here.  Responses are due by July 15, 2016.

You can contact Lyn Downing, CFRE, Chair of the Committee on Directorship for more information.  Onward!!! | (817)336-4949
