Program Topic: DONOR RETENTION:
Current Rates are Startling!  What Can Every Fundraiser Do to Reverse the Trend?

This session explores the Fundraising Effectiveness Project report commissioned by AFP and the Urban Institute. The dismal news in this report can and should be an eye opener for every nonprofit engaged in fundraising. We will focus on the root causes of poor retention rates, and offer tips for improvement based on the principles of Dr. Adrian Sargeant and Tom Ahern: two world renowned authorities on building donor loyalty. Sargeant and Ahern's principles are based upon years of research conducted in the sector and can be used by any organization, whether you are a one person shop or a large department. We will show examples of their principles in action. The results can be astounding when put into daily use!

Target Audience:  Senior Leaders / Executive Directors, Gift Officers, Donor Relations, Researchers (CFRE Credit approved)

About the Presenter:
Chris Painchaud, Bloomerang
Chris has been helping nonprofits increase efficiency and raise more money for over 13 years, both in his professional career and as a personal fundraiser. And he has worked in the nonprofit sector for his entire 30 year career. His experience ranges from managing small & midsize nonprofits (both c3 and c6) to personal fundraising, volunteering and board leadership for nonprofits in his community. Chris is currently a Regional Sales Account Executive at Bloomerang. With Bloomerang, he is helping to revolutionize how databases are used in the charity world and bringing focus on donor retention.  Prior to Bloomerang, Chris had spent seven years at eTapestry, where he worked on the ground floor of the then fledgling business, and eventually led the launch of the company's first "vertical market" specialization efforts, where he led the healthcare team. Before that, he was an executive with several trade associations in Indiana and in Ohio.  Chris serves on the Board of Directors of Safe Families of Indiana; is a youth mentor with Shepherd Community in Indianapolis, and is a perennial top fundraiser for the Indiana Chapter of the American Diabetes Association.  Chris holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Journalism & Communications from Ohio State University.

President's Message

SEPTEMBER 2015

Many of you are probably in planning mode these days for your upcoming fiscal year.  Whether it is finding good information on best practices, samples of materials or articles on a wide array of fundraising topics, I have just the source for you.  Your AFP membership includes access to the Resource Center, which hosts a wonderful collection of information.  Just log in at afpnet.org and go to the Resource Center tab at the top.

Another tool in your AFP toolbox is The AFP Ethics Assessment Inventory™ (EAI) and is available online for voluntary use.The EAI is based on research conducted by the Center for Ethical Business Cultures (CEBC) at the University of St. Thomas-Minnesota and on input from nearly 2,000 AFP members.

A 14-item online survey instrument, the EAI provides fundraisers and organizations the following:
  • A snapshot of their ethical performance.
  • A comparison of themselves with peers from across AFP.
  • A way to assess and strengthen ethical dimensions of their practice.
Check it out at HERE!

I've got one more tip to share.  A great article Advancing in Your Fundraising Career is available in the Hot Topics section of the Resource Center.  Here's a summary of the suggestions:
  1. It's critically important to develop and adhere to a personal mission.
  2. Think about where you want to be in 10 years and how you are going to get there.
  3. Take part in the CFRE and ACFRE credentialing process.
  4. Learn as much as you can from as many sources as possible
  5. Develop your own market niche.
  6. Keep a file documenting your accomplishments.
  7. Be committed to networking
  8. Practice interviewing.
  9. Learn to negotiate.
As always, thank you for your involvement with the Fort Worth Metro Chapter and I look forward to seeing everyone at the September 14th luncheon!

Onward,

Lyn Downing, CFRE

AFP Connection Circle
abstract-circles.jpg
The Greater Fort Worth Chapter is bringing back leadership circles. We will have a new AFP Connection Circle starting in October and going for 5 or six sessions, depending on need and interest. The Connection Circle will meet on a Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday from 3:00-4:30 p.m. or 3:30-5:00 p.m. at a location convenient to where the members of the circle work. We will meet in October, November, January, February and March, with an April session as a possibility.

This circle is open to AFP members with 7 or fewer years of experience and the cost is only $25
. The Connection Circle will be limited to a maximum of 10 participants, so each of us can get the best experience possible. During our time together, we will learn from each other, share our experiences, good and bad, make new friends and enhance our careers. The group facilitator will be Craig Schaefer, a past president of our chapter, recipient of the Ben Franklin Award and over 46 years of nonprofit experience. A co-facilitator will also be part of the group. If you are interested in signing up for this experience, you can register here. Registrations will be open until Tuesday, September 15. If the demand is high enough, a second group will be considered.
