Purpleheart (Peltogyne spp ) is native to Central and South America. When freshly cut the heartwood is a light brown, but within minutes it turns to a bright purple. It is known for its strength and durability and was originallly used for boat building and heavy construction.
Because of its beautiful color, it is now used for making fine furniture, cabinetry, inlay work, guitars, turned items and flooring.
