It may feel like mid summer but schools are revving up for a new school year. Whereas summer may mean a more relaxed schedule, time to explore different interests and meet new friends; school brings more structure, routine and a steady pace. If you haven't already, you will soon be receiving school supply lists and other important information from your child's school. Now is the time to prepare. An "ounce" of preparation can go far! Lets take a look at supplies, routine and dress before you start out to school this year so you can send your kids back to school with sensory smarts and sensory power!

1. Do your research
First, find out as much as you can about your child's next year. Will they need extra support? Is the school aware of their challenges? Can you meet with your child's teacher(s) before school starts so you can set a game plan that is comfortable for everyone?

The user-friendly LAJAC virtual resource center offers two paths for accessing information-one for adults who are advocating for themselves, and one for parents and caregivers. Each path serves as a how-to guide and offers 80 resources and 10 fillable/printable forms to help guide the decision-making process. It also directs clients to employment, education and social opportunities, promotes self-advocacy and independence, and answers questions about rights and responsibilities. And, best of all, it's available online 24-7.

California's New
Self-Determination Law for Regional Center Consumers and Their Families

In October 2013, California Governor Jerry Brown signed SB 468 into law creating a statewide Self-Determination Program that offers regional center consumers a voluntary alternative to the traditional system and more control over the services they receive and the individuals who support them.

What is self-determination?
Self-Determination is a voluntary program that provides participants with an Individual Budget they can use to purchase the services and supports needed to implement their Individual Program Plan (IPP).

What Kind Of Services Can You Get Through Self Determination?
  • You or your family member can set up a wide range of services that help you meet your IPP goals.
  • These could include many services that you currently receive from your regional center, however, you are not required to use agencies that are vendored with your regional center.
  • You can also choose unique services and supports that are not traditionally funded by your regional center to help you meet your IPP goals.
  • You can also access some suspended services such as social and recreation programs, camp, non-medical therapies, and respite.
