Use the right tool for the job
I've been doing a lot of presentations and speeches on social media, content marketing and using new tools for business development and crisis communications. It seems as though a new "must use" social media option crops up almost daily. It can be overwhelming, and many people ask me "how do I choose?"
My answer is always the same. Pick the tool that's right for your job.
Here's what that means:
1. Choose the platform that fits your strategy and corporate culture. (You do have a strategy for social media, right?) If immediate responses are not possible in your company, Twitter may not work for you.
2. Know your audience and choose the platform where they live. If you're looking for business executives, think Linkedin, for example.
3. Understand how people use each platform and carefully consider if that's going to get the results you want.
4. Make sure your content is suitable for the site. If you don't have good visuals, don't use Pinterest.
5. Beware of resource drain! Evaluate your in house or contract resources and make sure you can make the kind of commitment a platform needs to make it worthwhile.
Remember that content marketing is critical. You need good content to get engagement - and engagement is more important than likes!
Always remember, social media is just another tool in your overall strategic marketing effort. Use it wisely and it can help you reach your goals.

Why even pros hire pros for their jobs
|
I've long promoted the idea that companies really need to hire professional help for their marketing and communications efforts. This year, I've been personally reminded of that truth in a project of my own.
I'm running for Harford County Council, District C, and I've learned two important things:
1. A strong communications strategy, executed according to plan, works. I'm a total newbie to politics, but I'm getting a good response, thanks to treating my campaign like a client and having a strategy and plan.
2. Don't try to do it all on your own. I've had to call in help from other professionals in crafting my message because I'm just too close to the project (me!). Getting another professional's insight was invaluable.
If you want to see what I mean, you can follow my campaign here. It's certainly an interesting experience!
