Archbishop Gitari

Anglican Church of Kenya (ACK) died Monday at 2:10 pm. He was 76. Gitari was one of those larger than life figures. He was absolutely courageous, brilliant, and committed to the implications of the Gospel in everyday life. He was marked for death by government hit squads and three times had to escape in the middle of the night when they came to kill him. One of the times, he escaped through the roof of his house and slipped into the jungle. When I first met David Gitari, I expected to meet a giant and I was not disappointed. What I did not expect, however, was how hysterically funny he could be - and regularly was. He would smile with a broad grin and then succumb to the volcanic laughter that was rising inside and erupt with belly laughter. One day we were sitting in his office with our feet propped up. We were surrounded by great piles of papers arranged in some cryptic filing system known only to him, when he commented, "President Moi used to try to kill me. Now he prays for my health and safety because he knows if anything - even an accident - befalls me, he will be blamed!"... Read the rest of Bishop Atwood's article here.

Anglican Perspective: 39 Articles, Article 2 Part 2
|
This week Canon Ashey continues discussing the second article in the 39 Articles of Religion. He specifically focuses on the uniqueness of Christ. II. Of the Word or Son of God, which was made very Man.The Son, which is the Word of the Father, begotten from everlasting of the Father, the very and eternal God, and of one substance with the Father, took Man's nature in the womb of the blessed Virgin, of her substance: so that two whole and perfect Natures, that is to say, the Godhead and Manhood, were joined together in one Person, never to be divided, whereof is one Christ, very God, and very Man; who truly suffered, was crucified, dead, and buried, to reconcile his Father to us, and to be a sacrifice, not only for original guilt, but also for actual sins of men. George and Barbara Witness a Wedding - When a Private Act Sends a Public Message

George H.W. and Barbara Bush
|
October 1, 2013 By R. Albert Mohler
Former President George H. W. Bush and his wife Barbara attended a wedding a few days ago, and it made national news. According to The Washington Post, the elder Bushes attended the wedding of Bonnie Clement and Helen Thorgalsen, held at Kennebunkport, Maine. The two lesbians, co-owners of a general store in neighboring Kennebunk, were married in an outdoor celebration attended by family and friends. The 41st President of the United States was present, along with the former First Lady....
The news coverage of the Bushes' attendance at the same-sex wedding points to a reality that must be understood - and fast. Attendance at a wedding is not a neutral act. The history and context of the wedding ceremony identify all those present as agreeing to the rightness of the marriage and acting as witnesses to the exchange of vows. This is why the venerable language of The Book of Common Prayer, used in the overwhelming majority of Christian weddings, calls upon anyone with knowledge that the proposed union is invalid to speak, "or forever hold his peace." Anyone remaining silent at that point is affirming the rightness and validity of the marriage, and all who are present are counted as both witnesses and those who celebrate the union....

South Carolina Judge Denies Episcopal Church Request to Expand Lawsuit to Include Diocese Standing Committee Members and Trustees
|
Source: Anglican Ink October 3, 2013
CHARLESTON, SC - South Carolina Circuit Judge Diane S. Goodstein released her decision yesterday that the Episcopal Church (TEC) and its local remnant, the Episcopal Church in South Carolina (ECSC) cannot expand their counterclaims against the Diocese of South Carolina to include almost two dozen parishioners who voluntarily serve as diocesan Trustees and members of the Diocese's Standing Committee.
In her decision, Judge Goodstein wrote, "This court finds that the individual leaders whom Defendants seek to join as Counterclaim Plaintiffs are entitled to immunity" under state law. She also wrote that "adding the additional defendants would be futile."
In the spring, TEC and ECSC had sought to broaden their lawsuit against the diocese to include dozens of diocesan volunteers, threatening to hold them financially liable. They filed to add these additional defendants to their lawsuit after attempting to move the entire matter to U.S. District Court, where a federal judge decided the issue would best be heard in South Carolina circuit court....

Pentagon refuses to turn over records of communications with controversial anti-Christian activist

Mikey Weinstein
|
October 2, 2013 By Kirsten Andersen
Washington D.C. - The government watchdog group Judicial Watch has sued the Pentagon after it failed to respond by the June 18 deadline to a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request it filed in May demanding the Department of Defense turn over all records of communication between the Pentagon and Mikey Weinstein, a controversial atheist activist who has been meeting with Pentagon officials in an advisory role since the earliest days of the Obama administration.
Weinstein, whom Defense News called one of the "100 Most Influential People in U.S. Defense," is the founder and president of the Military Religious Freedom Foundation (MRFF). According to Defense News, the organization "Advocat[es] for secularism in the military" and "campaign[s] against public prayer and proselytizing by Air Force officers." He has compared practicing Christians to Nazis and terrorist groups, called for a ban on Christian prayer in the military, and said that soldiers who attempt to share the Gospel with others are guilty of "sedition and treason" and "spiritual rape."...

To the Faithful of the Global Fellowship of Confessing Anglicans and friends

30th September 2013
'Finally be strong in the Lord and the strength of his might. Put on the whole armour of God, that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil' Ephesians 6:10, 11
My dear brothers and sisters,
Greetings in the precious name of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ!
Today we are just three weeks away from the first day of GAFCON 2013 and I am eagerly looking forward to welcoming many of you from around the world to Nairobi and All Saints Cathedral. Last week our General Secretary, Archbishop Peter Jensen and our Executive Director, Bishop Martyn Minns, were with me here in Nairobi on a planned visit to review our preparation and we are so thankful to God for his blessing and provision.
I know however that, like me, you will have been very distressed by the callous and violent attack on the Westgate shopping centre here in Nairobi last week. It seems that this was an exercise carefully designed in cold blood to create a climate of fear and break the spirit of the Kenyan people. We have seen a manifestation of evil in this city, but my prayer for our conference is that it will be a manifestation of the presence of God in the power of the Holy Spirit. We are gathering to be inspired afresh from the Scriptures by the love of God which has triumphed over evil by the power of the cross and compels us to reach all nations. Nairobi will become the focus not of bad news, but of the good news of the gospel of God.
Terrorism is of course a global phenomenon, as those brothers and sisters joining us from Pakistan and Nigeria know only too well. Likewise, but more subtly, the spiritual crisis of secularism and pluralism is also becoming a global threat through the spread of mass communications. To meet these challenges we need to become a Communion which is confident and courageous in its witness because it is making strong disciples who are securely grounded in the truth of God's Word.
GAFCON 2013 builds on the outstanding achievement of our first meeting In Jerusalem five years ago. Now, as we meet again in Nairobi, we look forward not only to a time of refreshment and inspiration, but we also prepare ourselves to give careful thought to the action we need to take so that we can sustain and strengthen our fellowship for the future.
It is a very big encouragement to me that so many of you will be here in solidarity with us, standing 'strong in the Lord and the strength of his might'. I want to assure delegates that we are of course taking every step possible to ensure your safety and security, and ask all of us to join with me in earnest prayer in seeking the face of the Lord as we prepare for this great gathering.
The Most Rev Dr Eliud Wabukala
Primate of Kenya and Chairman of the Global Fellowship of Confessing Anglicans

Archbishop Welby delighted to be christening Prince George
| Source: Anglican Communion News Service September 30, 2013
The Archbishop of Canterbury is delighted to have been invited to conduct the christening of HRH Prince George.
Kensington Palace announced this afternoon that the Prince will be christened on Wednesday 23 October at the Chapel Royal, St James's Palace.
Archbishop Justin said today: 'I am delighted to be invited to conduct the baptism of HRH Prince George. It is a great privilege and honour and will without doubt be an occasion of immense joy and celebration. I am looking forward to welcoming him into the family of the church.'
Editor's note: According to Anglican Ink, Archbishop Welby was invited to the GAFCON gathering but declined on the basis of a prior commitment, presumably the christening of Prince George. Archbishop Welby's spokesman said that he will be sending a pre-recorded video greeting to GAFCON.
