Bishop Michael Nazir-Ali on modern marriage

In this Weekly Update, we have included an article by Bishop Michael Nazir-Ali on the current state of marriage in Western cultures. What the Simon Cowell affair tells us about modern marriage - and how to save it

The news that Simon Cowell is about to have a baby with the wife of his best friend has astonished even a world-weary media. While one newspaper has congratulated the father-to-be, in spite of the somewhat tangled circumstances of the child's conception, others see it as a betrayal of the basic values of loyalty and trust amongst friends. Whatever the particular details of this sorry tale, we have to see it against the background of a widespread breakdown of marriage and family life. Rather than thinking of others first, we are now encouraged to think first of ourselves. The rather amusing discovery that we increasingly use our mobile phone cameras to take pictures of ourselves just about sums up the situation. It is not just selfishness, however. In the last 50 years there has been a full-scale ideological attack on marriage by activists and academics determined to undermine the institutions of society, of which the family is the most basic. It is where we first belong: the first school, the first church, the first community. Instead of the commitment and stability of marriage and family, regarded by these chattering classes as bourgeois, they have advocated and practised "pure relationships" which last only as long as either partner wants them to last.... Appeals court grants, then retracts HHS mandate stay for Liberty University
|
Source: LifeSiteNews August 8, 2013 By LifeSiteNews staff
Yesterday, the Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals issued two conflicting orders in Liberty Counsel's ObamaCare case, Liberty University v. Lew (formerly called Liberty University v. Geithner).
The court of appeals first issued a stay of the Mandate. But, last evening, the same court reversed itself and issued another order denying the stay of the Mandate.
"Denying a stay while awaiting a petition for cert is not unusual, but it is unusual that conflicting orders are sent on the subject. The conflicting orders from the court of appeals do not have any relevant bearing on this case. We are preparing the petition to ask the Supreme Court to review the case," said Mat Staver, Founder and Chairman of Liberty Counsel.
Liberty Counsel is preparing a petition for cert for the Supreme Court, which will be delivered this fall.
Liberty Counsel's challenge to ObamaCare is the most comprehensive case pending, challenging (1) the employer mandate; (2) the abortion mandate for religious employers; (3) the abortion mandate for individuals; and (4) the entire law because tax bills must originate in the House....

"Indaba" continues: Conference on sexuality held in Kenya
| Source: Chicago Consultation
A group of 27 African Anglicans, 16 Episcopalians and several ecumenical friends gathered July 29-August 1, 2013 at the Jumuia Conference Centre in Limuru, Kenya, to explore issues of sexuality in dialogue with scripture. The consultation continued conversations and relationships begun two years earlier at a similar consultation in Durban, South Africa.... The framework of the consultation - a liberation theology methodology called See, Judge, Act - encouraged participants to listen to the experience of those who are marginalized due to their sexuality and read scriptural texts in which biblical figures are similarly marginalized; evaluate how scripture is being interpreted and whether the church is responding with love and compassion to marginalized people; and then act in solidarity with those who are marginalized. One of the principle themes of the consultation was how the Bible has been translated and interpreted in African and North American contexts and especially how it has been used both to oppress sexual minorities and other marginalized people and to provide hope for liberation and equality. Christians from nine African countries and the United States attended the consultation.

Editor's note: One of the conveners of the conference was The Chicago Consultation, whose principal focus "is on strategies for advancing the inclusion on GLBT people in the sacramental life of the Church while resisting further discrimination."

Archbishop Justin has spoken of the "joyful" work of building Christian-Muslim relationships in his first annual message to Muslims on Eid Al-Fitr, which marks the end of Ramadan.
He encouraged the "hard" but also "joyful" work of building "deep and long-lasting relationships" between the two faith communities, which he said he had experienced during his time working in Nigeria.
The Archbishop also praised the work of the Christian Muslim Forum, which he became patron of earlier this year....

Egypt: Al Qaeda Flag Flies Above Christian Churches
| Source: Gatestone Institute August 7, 2013 By Raymond Ibrahim
Days ago, al-Qaeda's Egyptian leader, Ayman Zawahiri, portrayed the overthrow of Muhammad Morsi and the Brotherhood as a "Crusader" campaign led by Coptic Pope Tawadros II who, according to Zawahiri and other terrorists, is trying to create a Coptic state in Egypt.
Since then, not only are Egypt's Christians and churches now being attacked in ways unprecedented in the modern era, but new reports indicate that al-Qaeda's black flag has been raised on some of them, specifically St. George Church in Sohag....
