Anglican Perspective: GAFCON II April 25, 2013
All Saint's Cathedral in Nairobi, Kenya will host the second Global Anglican Future Conference (GAFCON) on October 21-26, 2013. In this Anglican Perspective, Canon Phil Ashey is in Nairobi, where the leaders of GAFCON recently held a planning meeting and finalized plans for the upcoming event. The first GAFCON, held in Jerusalem in 2008, was a major step in an organized, global effort to refocus the Anglican Communion around a common confession including Jesus Christ as Lord, the Bible as the Word of God and other central beliefs. Christ Church, the parish home of George Washington, celebrated its first same-gender blessing April 21.
"As an Episcopal faith community, we witnessed and asked God's blessings upon the lifelong commitment Melissa Capers and Brunilda Hernandez have made to one another," said the Rev. Ann Gillespie, Christ Church senior associate rector who officiated at the service....
This is considered an important event for Christ Church and the Episcopal Diocese of Virginia, said a church spokeswoman. When Bishop Shannon Johnston granted permission for this specific blessing, according to Christ Church, he offered his "thanksgiving for Christ Church's leadership in our diocese as we continue to move forward in this new aspect of our liturgical life... I am no less thankful for Melissa and Bruni."...

South Carolina: African bishops endorse Bishop Mark Lawrence
| Source: Post and Courier April 21, 2013
Four Anglican bishops from East Africa announced their support last week for the Diocese of South Carolina's disassociation from the Episcopal Church and praised Bishop Mark Lawrence, according to a news release.
Lawrence left the Episcopal Church in October because of disagreements over theology and governance. He and others who disassociated from the church contend their diocese predates the national church and is the only real "Diocese of South Carolina."
Both sides have taken to court the question of which has right to the assets, property and diocesan name....

The Woodlands, Texas: Anglican church pastor named bishop of new [ACNA] diocese
| Source: VirtueOnline April 23, 2013 By Jonathan Garris
When Clark Lowenfield, senior pastor at HopePointe Anglican Church in The Woodlands, learned he would become Bishop of the Anglican Diocese of the Western Gulf Coast, he had a couple of reactions.
"First, it was a very humbling experience," Lowenfield said. "Then all of the sudden, you realize how much you don't know. There's a sense of amazement that God will use anybody, even me."
The newly formed diocese will consist of 12 churches throughout Louisiana and Texas. Lowenfield's responsibilities as bishop includes overseeing these current and future congregations.
At his consecration inside The Woodlands United Methodist Church Saturday, priests, bishops and deacons from around the world gathered to celebrate and welcome Lowenfield as a leading member in the Anglican congregation. Lowenfield received prayers from his fellow bishops, as well as a staff to act as the shepherd to his congregation.
As another form of ordination, the event centered around communion, and Lowenfield took vows of faith and service. Among those in attendance included Robert Duncan, archbishop of the Anglican Church in North America, and chief consecrator Rev. Nathan Gasatura, representing The Most Rev. Onesphore Rwaje as the archbishop of the Anglican Church of Rwanda.
Lowenfield served under Gasatura prior to joining the Anglican Church in North America....

Belgium: Catholic Archbishop prays while topless gay activists shout curses and douse him with water

Archbishop Leonard
| In an astonishing display of gentleness in the face of a vile attack, the head of the Catholic Church in Belgium, Archbishop Andre-Joseph Leonard, remained calmly seated with eyes closed in prayer Tuesday as four topless women attacked him with shouts and curses and doused him with water.
It's not the first time the bishop has been attacked for standing up for the Church's teachings on homosexuality and expressing his concern for those who live the homosexual lifestyle.
The incident took place at the ULB University in Brussels where the archbishop was participating in a debate on blasphemy laws....
According to FEMEN, Tuesday's attack was spurred by an interview three weeks ago where Archbishop Leonard said that when speaking to Christians who are inclined to homosexuality he suggests celibacy, as is required for all single persons....
