Late Season Rabbit Hunt

It had been too long since I took to a snow-covered forest in pursuit of cottontail rabbits. So when Jim Low, the recently retired writer from the Missouri Conservationist, asked if I wanted to go kick some brush for bunnies, I excitedly agreed.

"There's no need to go too early," Jim said. "Let's meet up around 10 in the morning and hunt for a few hours."

This was music to my ears. After countless forays into the predawn darkness of the white-tailed deer woods over the last few months, the idea of sleeping in, and having breakfast and coffee before venturing out on a hunt sounded perfect. Turns out it was.

Small game hunting, specifically rabbits and squirrels, is a sporting tradition suffering serious decline. With the excitement of a trophy aspect eliminated from the equation, small game hunters are left to find highlights in the experience of hunting and the enjoyment of table fare collected from their efforts. Advertisers aren't too interested in promoting these oldest of outdoor traditions and therefore new hunters often lack exposure to the overall...

Eighth Annual Governor's
Youth Turkey Hunt
The Governors Youth Turkey Hunt has been a successful event for years. It serves as a celebration of Missouri's role in providing outdoor recreational opportunity as well as recruiting and retaining  outdoor enthusiasts. This hunt is a cooperative effort between Governor Nixon, the Conservation Federation of Missouri, National Wild Turkey Federation, the Missouri Department of Conservation, elected officials, private landowners and other volunteers.

Qualified applicants should be youth ages 11 to 15 that are interested in giving hunting a try but have not yet had the opportunity. Second priority, if openings exist, will be given to youth that have previously hunted but are giving turkey hunting a shot for the first time.

Successful applicants will be invited to attend an orientation Friday afternoon that will include hunter safety, regulations and a chance to shoot their shotguns. Friday night, the hunters and their chaperones will attend a dinner at the Governor's Mansion hosted by the Governor and First Lady. After the meal and a few words from the Governor, the hunters will depart for their hunting destinations. The youth hunters will be guided on a turkey hunt Saturday and Sunday.
