The Winter Bird World

Guest post by: Ethan Duke Missouri River Bird Observatory

It's winter and a great time to be in the field. The uncomfortable chill in the clean, crisp air melts away once we put one foot in front of the other and get moving. All you need is warm dry layers and a love for the outdoors.

Going afield in the winter has advantages over other seasons. First, even some of the most popular places are devoid of distractions created by others. This helps you spend more time focused on the natural experience and also increases the chance of wildlife being undisturbed. Also, when lucky enough to have snow on the ground, wildlife is often easier to spot.

Nature is fascinating and if you haven't yet had a change to explore your warm weather haunts in the winter, you are missing out. From determining how hungry the deer are by examining what they are choosing for winter browse or looking for...

CFM Annual Convention
March 18-20, 2016

Please make plans to join us March 18-20, 2016 at our 80th CFM Annual Convention in Jefferson City at the Capitol Plaza Hotel. We are making preparations for our biggest and best convention ever.

Each year many businesses, affiliates and individuals contribute to our success by underwriting part of our costs for the weekend. We are deeply grateful for this incredible generosity. If you are planning to attend and have any items for our auction please get them to us at your earliest convenience. This will allow us time to plan for their effective use.

So, mark your calendar, and plan to join us as we celebrate conservation at our annual convention.

Eighth Annual Governor's
Youth Turkey Hunt
The Governors Youth Turkey Hunt has been a successful event for years. It serves as a celebration of Missouri's role in providing outdoor recreational opportunity as well as recruiting and retaining  outdoor enthusiasts. This hunt is a cooperative effort between Governor Nixon, the Conservation Federation of Missouri, National Wild Turkey Federation, the Missouri Department of Conservation, elected officials, private landowners and other volunteers.

Qualified applicants should be youth ages 11 to 15 that are interested in giving hunting a try but have not yet had the opportunity. Second priority, if openings exist, will be given to youth that have previously hunted but are giving turkey hunting a shot for the first time.

Successful applicants will be invited to attend an orientation Friday afternoon that will include hunter safety, regulations and a chance to shoot their shotguns. Friday night, the hunters and their chaperones will attend a dinner at the Governor's Mansion hosted by the Governor and First Lady. After the meal and a few words from the Governor, the hunters will depart for their hunting destinations. The youth hunters will be guided on a turkey hunt Saturday and Sunday.
