OCOM President Dr. Michael Gaeta Announces His Retirement
After serving as president of Oregon College of Oriental Medicine for nearly a decade, Dr. Michael Gaeta has announced his retirement, effective in July 2015.
"After much thought, reflection and careful consideration, I have decided to take the next step in my life," said Dr. Gaeta. "OCOM has experienced steady growth and development as an institution of higher education, and I'm confident it will continue to flourish as a leader in our field. I look forward to my own opportunity to spend more time with family and to explore our world."
Since arriving at the college in 2005, Dr. Gaeta has overseen an impressive list of accomplishments, including:
- Completion of the college's move to its current home in Portland's Old Town Chinatown neighborhood;
- A doubling of the number of full-time faculty members;
- Success in the Research Department procuring large grants from the National Institutes of Health.
"Dr. Gaeta's work over the past nine years leaves the college poised for a strong future," said Peter Martin, OCOM's Board Chair. "His successor will take the helm of an institution with a state-of-the-art facility, increasing enrollment, and a stellar reputation in the acupuncture and Oriental medicine community."
The college's Board of Trustees has established a succession planning committee, which is working in close cooperation with Director of Human Resources, Helen Smith, in a national search for OCOM's next president.

This year's Capstone projects featured topics ranged from end of life care to integrative medicine for women's health, Chinese medicine and oncology, and treatments for traumatic brain injury, among others. These projects are a key component of the college's DAOM progr s that contribute new ideas and perspectives to the canon of Chinese medicine. Our doctoral program is a clinically focused postgraduate degree program. It was the first of its kind to be offered in the United States and represents the highest formal educational credential currently available in the field of acupuncture and Oriental medicine (AOM) in this country. Established in 2003, the OCOM doctoral program has enrolled 10 cohorts of students and has 114 DAOM graduates. Fall Weekend Specialty Clinics Focus on Women's Health
Through December, OCOM's Weekend Specialty Clinics will focus on the personalized treatment of women's health issues. The next clinic will take place on Sunday, September 21.
Weekend Specialty Clinics focus on treating individuals with complex, chronic conditions. At these special appointments, you are seen by a group of licensed acupuncturists receiving their doctoral training, who draw upon their collective experience in Chinese medicine to address particularly complex cases. You are then treated by a doctoral graduate practitioner using acupuncture and herbs.
Weekend Specialty Clinic visits cost $25, and last approximately 90 minutes. Schedule your appointment at our downtown OCOM Clinic today: 503-445-0951.
