OCOM Bulletin
MAY/JUNE 2014

With the implementation of the Affordable Care Act (ACA) across the country, the million dollar question health care providers are asking is one that is three-fold: how do we provide better quality health care, with better patient satisfaction and outcomes, at less cost? Collectively, those three questions are known as the "Triple Aim" and reflect a movement toward patient-centered care that our health care system in Oregon, and the rest of the nation, is focused on achieving.

Chinese medicine is by its very nature built around this "Triple Aim." As a practice rooted in prevention and whole-body balance, Chinese medicine treats each patient as an individual, not a disease. Its goal is to support people in achieving greater health and balance to minimize chronic illness and disease, which is where the most expensive care becomes necessary. As research continues to confirm Chinese medicine's effectiveness for both acute and chronic ailments, Western medicinal institutions are seeing the advantages of adding services such as acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine to their clinics.

Read on for two national stories highlighting innovative examples of medical integration, and to learn more about a number of exciting upcoming presentations OCOM is hosting next month: a June 10 Navajo medicine presentation, our 2014 Lan Su Lecture Series, June 17's multi-disciplinary panel presentation on Cardiovascular Health, and a June 14 Weekend Specialty Clinic focused on Alzheimer's disease, dementia and Parkinson's disease.

Finally, an important announcement: If you are a new or returning OCOM patient, please note that in September we will be closing the OCOM Cherry Blossom ClinicThe sale of this property ---- our former campus ---- will conclude the strategic initiative that began with OCOM's relocation to Old Town Chinatown. To accommodate our patients, we will be re-opening the OCOM Hollywood Clinic on September 10. Watch for more information in future newsletters about a fall Open House event for our Hollywood clinic, as well as a goodbye ceremony honoring the many years and many stories from our southeast Portland clinic.

Yours in good health,

Hospitals Leading the Way: Integrating Chinese Medicine

The latest information on acupuncture use shows that a third of the U.S. population has tried it at least once. As one of the leading institutions in the education of Chinese medicine practitioners in the nation, OCOM believes that that's because Chinese medicine, including acupuncture and herbs, provides a patient-centered health care option that is not only effective for the treatment of certain diseases, but is also focused on preventative care and health maintenance.

With a growing base of clinical studies demonstrating the effectiveness of the medicine, a number of Western medical providers are leading the way toward integrative care by adding Chinese medicine to their in-house health care services. Two leading U.S. hospitals were recently featured in online stories highlighting their integration of acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine to better support their patient health needs: The Cleveland Clinic and University of Colorado Hospital.

You don't have to travel across the country to experience the healing benefits of Chinese medicine. OCOM's clinics offer $25 acupuncture appointments and $5 herbal consultations. Make your appointment today: call 503-445-0951!

At these special appointments, you are seen by a group of licensed acupuncturists receiving their doctoral training, who draw upon their collective experience in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) to address particularly complex cases. You are then treated by a doctoral graduate practitioner using acupuncture and herbs.

Fee for the session is $25, lasting approximately 90 minutes. Schedule your appointment at our downtown OCOM Clinic today: 503-445-0951.
