Celebrating OCOM's 27th Commencement
On August 30, more than 450 family members and friends attended Oregon College of Oriental Medicine's 2013 Commencement ceremony at Portland's Newmark Theatre. Forty-nine Master of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (MAcOM) degrees and fourteen doctorates in acupuncture and Oriental medicine (DAOM) were conferred at the ceremony. This year's ceremony marks OCOM's 27th commencement since the college was founded in 1983.
Keynote speaker Sam Chase, a Metro Councilor and the Executive Director for the Coalition of Community Health Clinics (CCHC), spoke about the importance of forming alliances and building partnerships to maximize health care transformation ---- and the important role Chinese medicine practitioners play in that transformation. "In my years of serving as an advocate for providing vulnerable community members with equitable access to health care and as Executive Director of Community Coalition of Health Clinics," said Chase, "Chinese medicine has always been an important part of our service success. Our community members appreciate its healing impact and personal transformation potential." |

Guest ColumnEmbracing the Triple Aim By Beth Howlett, LAc, President of the Oregon Association of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine Six months into presiding over the Oregon Association of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (OAAOM), I see an organization in the midst of enormous transformation and professional opportunity... Today we are at a pivotal moment for balancing the needs of the future with the lessons of the past. I am proud to be an Oregonian; the state is at the forefront of a health care revolution. By embracing the "triple aim" of the Affordable Care Act (ACA) ---- better health and better care at lower cost ---- Oregon has created a robust and well advertised exchange to increase options, access and quality. This includes exciting options like the Oregon Co-op, which offers competitive prices and unprecedented access to complementary care. As a testament to the Oregon Exchange's efforts, the number of hits on the Cover Oregon website on opening day represented about 21 percent of the uninsured in the state ---- and that was in spite of a federal government shutdown! What does this unprecedented emphasis on health promotion, access and integration mean for Oregon's acupuncturists and their patients? |
