OCOM Bulletin
JULY 2013
Greetings!

Happy Summer! The summer months are a great time to reconnect with your health and wellness goals, while building your reserves for the coming year. OCOM is pleased to help support your health - and the health of our community. We do this through our direct health care services, and through our students and graduates who research, practice and advocate for Chinese medicine in the greater community.

July's OCOM Bulletin highlights the many ways we are engaged in building community health, including our new public qigong class, clinic service insurance billing, our Weekend Specialty Clinics, and the use of research to help expand acupuncture for Oregon Health Plan participants. We are also pleased to share two stories about student and graduate leadership in the health care world: our 2013 Fall scholarship winners and alumni leadership in OAAOM, the statewide acupuncture advocacy group that supports the Chinese medicine profession in Oregon.

Here's to your good health,

Director of Community Relations and Giving

Influencing Oregon Health Policy with Acupuncture Research

A collaborative effort between OCOM's Research Department and the Oregon Association of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (OAAOM) is resulting in a steady expansion of coverage for acupuncture under the Oregon Health Plan (OHP), which provides health care coverage to low-income Oregonians. Each month, more than 600,000 people receive health care coverage through the OHP.

This ongoing work shows the valuable role research can play at the public policy level in validating acupuncture's clinical effectiveness, expanding access to low-income citizens, and supporting the expansion of the acupuncture profession.

September 22 - Traditional Chinese Medicine for Aging

October 20 - Gastrointestinal and Liver Conditions

November 17 - Gastrointestinal and Liver Conditions

December 15 - Musculoskeletal and Joint Conditions

Weekend Specialty Clinics are part of OCOM's doctoral program and focus on treating individuals with complex, chronic conditions. At these special appointments, patients are seen by OCOM's doctoral interns, a group of licensed acupuncturists who draw upon their collective experience in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) to address particularly complex cases using acupuncture and herbs. TCM supports healthy, successful aging as well as the treatment of specific health issues.
