FEBRUARY 2013

Greetings!

Happy Chinese New Year! On February 10, 2013, the Chinese lunar calendar celebrates the transition from the Year of the Dragon to the Year of the Snake. According to the Chinese zodiac, the Year of the Snake promises to be a more grounded, calm and peaceful year, abounding with opportunities for great prosperity.

This year, OCOM is pleased to announce many new exciting opportunities to engage with Chinese medicine, whether as a patient, prospective student, supporter or curious community member: our 30th anniversary and inaugural Cherry Blossom Dinner and Awards event, quarterly Saturday Seminars on Traditional Chinese Medicine, upcoming Weekend Specialty Clinics, Admissions deadlines, and the launch of our new online Chinese herbal medicinary. And, in case you missed reading up about 2012, you can download our recently published annual report.

Yours in good health,

Director of Community Relations and Giving

Next Clinic: February 24, Thyroid Conditions

Each year, OCOM offers a series of Weekend Specialty Clinics that focus on treating individuals with complex, chronic conditions. At these special appointments, patients are seen by a group of licensed acupuncturists who draw upon their collective experience to tackle particularly complex cases; the patient is then treated by a doctoral graduate practitioner using acupuncture and herbs.

On Saturday, February 24, OCOM faculty member Dr. Zhaoxue Lu will lead a Weekend Specialty Clinic on thyroid conditions at OCOM's downtown campus, focusing on conditions such as hypoglycemia, obesity, lipid disorders and metabolic syndromes. These clinics fill quickly ---- make your appointment as soon as possible by calling the OCOM Clinic: 503-445-0951.

eliotsittOCOM's Eliot Sitt Wins $6,000 Integrative Medicine Scholarship

At the 4th Annual Integrative Medicine Day on January 26, OCOM master's student Eliot Sitt won First Prize and a $6,000 scholarship at the Bob's Red Mill Integrative Medicine (IM) Scholarship Cup.

In his winning speech, Food As Medicine: The Promise of Whole Grains, Sitt said "the more we decide to eat grains, and the more we slow down to make sure that we get them right, the better able we'll be to make the right choices in our food to best support our own health. To me, this is the promise of whole grains, both as good food and as powerful medicine."

New Year Marks Launch of OCOM's Online Medicinary

OCOM Herbal Medicinary ---- the largest Chinese herbal medicinary in the Pacific Northwest ---- has been doing brisk in-person and mail-order business since opening its doors in September on the ground floor of OCOM's new campus. All the while, staff have been hard at work behind the scenes to create a comprehensive, easy-to-use online herbal medicinary for practitioners both here and across the country.

A resource for anyone seeking Chinese herbal remedies, both the online and physical store carry a wide array of ingredients and formulas: bulk dry Chinese herbs that are lab-tested with organic options; gluten-free granule extracts for greater ease in taking a customized formula; patent formulas in pill, tablet and capsule forms; tincture formulations; herbal pain patches; oils, salves and liniments; and cough syrups.

OCOM Herbal Medicinary services include:

  • Filling herbal formulas for licensed practitioners and the public (over-the-counter options are available);
  • Shipping custom orders anywhere in the United States; and
  • Online ordering from the OCOM Herbal Medicinary Online allows views of product inventory, and gives licensed practitioners the opportunity to order their patients' herbal formulas, with online payment for quick, convenient pick-up or shipment.

Haven't tried Chinese herbs to support your health and well-being? The OCOM Clinic offers a $5 herbal consultation with interns and a licensed practitioner. During this consultation you will discuss your health concerns and be prescribed a formula designed specifically for you. Call the OCOM Clinic to schedule your consultation: 503-445-0951.
