OCOM's Dr. Mitchell Bebel Stargrove Receives 2012 Vis Award
 Long-time OCOM faculty member Mitchell Bebel Stargrove, ND, LAc was awarded the coveted Vis Award at the closing gala of the American Association of Naturopathic Physicians (AANP) 27th Annual Conference, "Physicians and Patients Integrating Health and Healing," this past August. The AANP's Vis Award was developed in remembrance of Bill Mitchell, ND, one of the founders of the Washington naturopathic school, Bastyr University. The highly selective award is granted to individuals who represent the "Vis" ---- the profession's Latin-derived term for the healing power of nature ---- as demonstrated through their work, life and community service. OCOM Named Number One Acupuncture College in U.S. In September, Oregon College of Oriental Medicine was named the number one acupuncture college in the United States by thebestschools.org. More than 60 accredited acupuncture schools currently operate in the across the U.S. The ranking factors included:
- Quality of faculty, not only as practitioners of acupuncture, but also as researchers advancing the field;
- Success in training students who can lead the field;
- Having not merely a master's, but also a doctoral program in acupuncture;
- Comprehensiveness of the training program;
- How long the school has been in existence and its reputation for excellence during that time.

Hundreds Attend OCOM's Grand Opening Celebration
On October 5, more than 200 people attended the Grand Opening and ribbon-cutting ceremony for OCOM's new campus and clinic in Portland's Old Town Chinatown.
Emceed by OCOM's Board of Trustees chairman, Peter Martin, the program featured speakers including Mayor Sam Adams, Portland Development Commission Chair Scott Andrews, Northwest Health Foundation President Nichole Maher, Coalition of Community Health Clinics Director and recently elected Metro Councilor Sam Chase, Portland Business Alliance President Sandra McDonough, OCOM Acting President Dr. William Keppler, Nanjing University President Dr. Mian-hua Wu and internationally recognized Feng Shui consultant Alex Stark. A ribbon-cutting ceremony concluded the event.
"It's amazing to think," began PDC Chair Andrews, "that just a little more than a year ago we stood in the parking lot next door to celebrate the groundbreaking and start of construction. Now we are all witness to the transformation of the Globe Hotel into this incredible facility. This historic building, built in 1911, has been revitalized and returned to its past glory."

Visiting Research Scholar, Dr. Dawn Upchurch
This past October, Dawn Upchurch, PhD, LAc, served as OCOM's first Visiting Research Scholar.
Dr. Upchurch is a professor in the UCLA School of Public Health and is a health demographer and epidemiologist. She received her AB at Stanford University and her PhD at The Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. She has conducted research funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in women's health, employing biopsychosocial models to better understand women's health and well-being over the life-span, including reproductive health. Under an NIH-funded career development grant, Dr. Upchurch completed the master's program at Emperor's College of Traditional Oriental Medicine in Santa Monica, CA, and is now a licensed acupuncturist in California. She is doing research on complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) and women's health, with a particular focus on traditional Chinese medicine and women's reproductive health during mid-life.

OCOM Honored with Spirit of Portland Award
On October 29, Oregon College of Oriental Medicine was honored by City Commissioner Dan Saltzman with a 2012 Spirit of Portland award.
"The Spirit of Portland awards are a wonderful tribute to the many amazing community and neighborhood leaders who contribute to our thriving civic life in the city of Portland," said Commissioner Amanda Fritz, commissioner-in-charge of the Office of Neighborhood Involvement.

OCOM in The American Acupuncturist
The Fall 2012 issue of the journal, The American Acupuncturist, features two articles by OCOM faculty, staff and students. Recent doctoral graduate Jack Handlin, Dipl OM (NCCAOM), LAc published an article on infertility and Chinese medicine, and OCOM staff and faculty members Susan Sloan, Jamie Reeves, Miles Sledd and Jason Stein authored an article entitled, "The Changing Demographics of Acupuncture."
The American Acupuncturist is the official professional publication of the American Association of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (AAAOM). It features a wide variety of academic and professional articles informing and focusing on the Oriental medicine professional. lt has a circulation of more than 15,000 and is distributed quarterly to AAAOM members across the country
