OCOM Bulletin
AUGUST 2012
Greetings!

August is truly one of my favorite times of year. It's a month that feels like the bounty of summer is at its peak, and we seem to live larger knowing fall is just around the corner. A beautiful time that is both an ending and a beginning of the next season of life.

Life at OCOM's no different this time of year ---- students prepare for exams, graduation and next steps, final-year master's students get ready to enter our clinics as interns, and, come September, the college will gear up to welcome a new class of master's and doctoral students from all across the United States.

This fall marks an even more momentous occasion than the endings and beginnings of terms. Heading into our 30th year of existence, OCOM will move our campus and main clinic to Old Town Chinatown. In celebration of our relocation, we'll be hosting and participating in a number of events in our new neighborhood ---- in this issue, check out our new campus updates, read up on the fun-filled National Night Out event by OTCT Neighborhood Association, and the upcoming Mid-Autumn Festival celebration at Lan Su Chinese Garden. Remember, too, to save the dates for OCOM's Capstone project presentations as well as our October ribbon cutting, dedication ceremony and clinic open house. We hope to see you there!

The event kicked-off with a tour of the new building followed by the main event, hosted at the Floyd's Coffee Couch Street patio space, featuring food donated by local restaurants Alexis, Red Robe Teahouse and Portland Sandwich Company, among others.

Learn about Chinese Medicine at OCOM's Annual Capstone Presentations

On August 30, OCOM's Class of 2012 Doctor of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (DAOM) students will present their graduate theses at the Capstone Project presentations. This annual event will be held at our new downtown campus in Old Town Chinatown, 75 NW Couch Street, and is free and open to the public. Presentations begin at 8:45 AM with Brendan Walker Kosik on Approaching Mindfulness in Medicine, and will conclude with a presentation by Alicia Hill at 5:45 PM.

Capstone Projects, a key component of the college's DAOM program, are significant original research works that contribute new ideas and perspectives to the canon of Chinese medicine. Each year, student projects focus on the application of Chinese medicine and herbs to support better health and wellness.

OCOM's doctoral program is a clinically focused postgraduate degree program. It was the first of its kind to be offered in the United States and represents the highest formal educational credential currently available in the U.S. field of acupuncture and Oriental medicine (AOM). Established in 2003, the doctoral program has enrolled seven cohorts of students and has 75 DAOM graduates. Learn more about the DAOM degree program online or contact Director of Admissions, Anna Lewis  at 503-252-9383.
