OCOM Bulletin
MAY 2012
Greetings!

Lately I find myself picking up Chinese philosopher Lao Tzu's Tao Te Ching for inspiration. With the back-and-forth weather we've had, my guess is you're spending half your time outside enjoying the gorgeous blooms and greenery; the other half inside escaping the weather, like me, with tea, friends and, hopefully, good books. Reading during one of those rainy days, I rediscovered a quote from Lao Tzu that fits perfectly with our May newsletter:

"Kindness in words creates confidence. Kindness in thinking creates profoundness. Kindness in giving creates love."

Read about how Lao Tzu's concept of kindness is infiltrating our work: creating "confidence" at our White Coat Ceremony; creating sustainability "profoundness" in our new building with LEED Gold certification; creating "love" through graduate David Adler's service and healing; and the sharing of kindness all around through stories shared in our 2011 Annual Report and quarterly clinic newsletter, The Three Treasures.

Yours in good health,

Gretchen Horton

whitecoatOn the Practitioner Path: White Coat Ceremony

Over the years, OCOM's faculty have worked to more intentionally infuse professional development into the curriculum and experience of students. A step forward in that work took place at the end of Winter quarter, at the college's first-ever White Coat Ceremony.

leedgoldRelocation Update: OCOM Goes LEED Gold
OCOM's new campus and clinic in Old Town Chinatown combines innovative Eastern and Western design components ---- including a commitment to sustainability that will certify the building as a LEED Gold facility.

The Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design rating system, or LEED, was developed by the U.S. Green Building Council in 2000. According to their website, "LEED provides building owners and operators with a framework for identifying and implementing practical and measurable green building design, construction, operations and maintenance solutions."

The reuse of the 100-year old former Globe Hotel is itself a commitment to the goals of LEED certification ---- that is, sustainably renovating an existing building, rather than tearing down and creating a new building from scratch.

davidadlerCreating a Community of Service and Healing: OCOM Graduate David Adler

In many ways, the seeds for our September move to Old Town Chinatown were planted years ago. One such seed blossomed in David Adler, DC, LAc ---- OCOM alum, supervisor and Central City Concern (CCC) acupuncturist ---- whose work at the CCC Old Town Clinic has helped build a foundation of health and wellness in Northwest Portland.

"I wanted to be more in service to people," said Adler. "And at CCC, I can do that: we do a lot of good for people. It's good work."

AR2011Celebrating 2011: OCOM's Annual Report

Each year, OCOM selects stories that illustrate how our students, faculty, supporters and partners are transforming health care through acupuncture and Oriental medicine. Our just-published report highlights a number of inspirational stories, including the June groundbreaking ceremony for our new campus and clinic in Old Town Chinatown; Dr. Hong Jin, Chair of Oriental Medicine; OCOM patient Fred Noble; doctoral graduate Fujio McPherson; and board trustee Juliet Moran.
