OCOM Bulletin
OCTOBER 2011
Greetings!

In Chinese medicine, fall represents a time of transition from outward-moving energy to inward-based reflection. As the weather cools and the leaves turn red, gold and orange, the season offers each of us the opportunity to harvest the literal and figurative fruits of our warm-weather adventures, and enter into a journey from the busy fun of summer into the quiet reflections of autumn -- all in preparation for the winter months ahead.

This month's Bulletin marks the OCOM journey from student to graduate with a highlight of graduation keynote speaker, Dr. Fujio McPherson. We also touch on two important new initiatives that impact the future of Chinese medicine in meaningful ways, both locally and state-wide: the opening of our new Hollywood clinic location (and Open House) , and an update on how OCOM is working with Oregon Association of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (OAAOM) to support the integrity of the practice of Chinese medicine in the state.

Enjoy! In good health,

Gretchen Horton

Director of Community Relations and Annual Fund

OCOM Hollywood Clinic Open House

We invite you to celebrate our new OCOM Hollywood Clinic by joining us Wednesday, October 12 for an Open House celebration. The event begins at 4:30 PM, and features a short program at 5:00 PM, along with free acupuncture demonstrations, qigong and shiatsu massage. Download the invitation.

In September, we relocated our Hollywood area clinic to 2029 NE Cesar E Chavez Blvd, at the corner of NE Tillamook and (formerly) 39th Avenue. This beautiful, vibrant new space offers the same clinic services to the community as our southeast Portland campus clinic: $25 acupuncture treatments, shiatsu massage appointments and herbal medicine prescriptions.

Graduation Keynote Fujio McPherson

"If you had told me 20 years ago that the Army would be seeking to hire an acupuncturist," said OCOM keynote speaker and 2010 doctoral graduate LTC (Ret) Fujio McPherson, DAOM, MSN, ANP, LAc, "I would never have believed it."

Dr. McPherson came to OCOM's Doctor of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (DAOM) program in 2008 as a U.S. Army acupuncturist and nurse practitioner with a vision and personal goal: to create a holistic and preventative complementary medicine-based approach to maximize healing for anyone seeking foundational health and wellness. On September 2, he shared his vision with OCOM's 2011 graduating class, highlighting the exciting opportunities that exist for acupuncturists to lead the way in the transformation of health and health care. Seventy-one OCOM students were awarded degrees at the ceremony -- the 25th class since OCOM's first graduates in 1986. Fifty-six earned their Master of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (MAcOM) and 15 earned their Doctor of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (DAOM).

At the end of 2010, Oregon Association of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (OAAOM) began to mount a challenge to a proposed expansion of the scope of the Oregon chiropractor's license to include the "dry needling" procedure. Oregon College of Oriental Medicine quickly supported the position of OAAOM by formally objecting to the proposed expansion. Since the July request for injunction filed by OAAOM, and the subsequent Stay Order issued by the court, acupuncturists in Oregon have stepped up to support their profession and the advocacy work of OAAOM. At its September board meeting, OCOM recognized the work of the group and the importance of this case, and approved a $10,000 contribution to the OAAOM Legal Fund.

The donation from OCOM marks the most significant gift toward the legal fund, and symbolizes the college's support of the profession in Oregon and beyond. "At OCOM, we're not only educators. We believe in supporting the profession, and we believe that it's critical for practitioners to receive the comprehensive training that fully accredited programs such as OCOM's offer," states OCOM Board Chair Peter Martin.
