OCOM Bulletin
AUGUST 2011
Old Town gate
Greetings!

As OCOM's new campus in Old Town Chinatown builds toward a Fall 2012 opening, exciting opportunities to engage in the downtown neighborhood from afar abound. This August issue of the OCOM Bulletin invites you to learn more about our new neighborhood by joining us at the upcoming Under the Autumn Moon Festival; we also celebrate the conclusion of a successful Lan Su Chinese Garden medicine lecture series, and welcome our new Admissions Coordinator, Teres Smith, to the OCOM staff.

I look forward seeing you at the Under the Autumn Moon Festival on September 10!

In good health,

Gretchen Horton

Director of Community Relations and Annual Fund

p.s. Share the health! Forward the OCOM Bulletin to family and friends, and encourage them to join our mailing list.

In China, Japan and Southeast Asia, as well as Asian communities around the world, friends and relatives gather in September to celebrate mid-autumn and a successful harvest with offerings of melons and round "moon cakes" in honor of the moon. The offerings turn in to a celebration of the autumn season and local cultures.

This year's Under the Autumn Moon Festival will be celebrated on Saturday, September 10 from 11:00 AM to 5:00 PM in Old Town Chinatown at NW Flanders and 3rd Avenue. The 2011 Festival is a coming together of East Portland's annual Mid Autumn Fest (organized by Portland Arts & Cultural Center and Portland Chinese Times) with the Old Town Chinatown Business Association's third annual Autumn Festival.

teresWelcome, Teres Smith!

Teres Smith joined the OCOM staff as Admissions Coordinator this past July. He comes to the college with experience as both an Admissions Assistant and Admissions Representative at the Le Cordon Bleu School of Culinary Arts.

"I was drawn to OCOM," said Teres, "for the established excellence in service and healing in the community, and a chance to build on my admissions skills in the nonprofit sector. The sense of community here is palpable and the education opportunity in Oriental medicine is the best of its kind in the Northwest."

At the end of July, OCOM students, faculty and guests of Lan Su Chinese Garden enjoyed the final installment of this year's 12-week series of Chinese medicine presentations in the garden's Scholar's Hall.

This year, 108 guests joined OCOM scholars for events ranging from a walking tour of Chinese herbs in bloom with our Herbal Dispensary Director, Mary-Ellen Katz, LAc, to a lecture on Chinese medicine within the context of global trade and expansion presented by renowned local scholar, Jeffrey Barlow, PhD.
