OCOM Bulletin
MAY 2011

I know I've mentioned spring in my last two e-mails, but I can't help but celebrate the beauty of spring's bloom and the promise of summer that I see around us! As daylight increases, and we have the chance to bask in the long-awaited sun, many of us find we have more energy to be out and about. From a Chinese medicine perspective, more sun equals more yang, a concept that can be expressed as movement, light and/or energy.

Engage this energy and learn more about Chinese medicine and yang by joining OCOM at the Lan Su Chinese Garden, each Tuesday through July, and hear how others are cultivating their yang by serving Portland communities and practicing graceful aging. Enjoy!

In good health,

Gretchen Horton

Director of Community Relations and Annual Fund

Roberto Masferrer

OCOM students bring to their Chinese medicine studies a variety of wide-ranging backgrounds. Some come from biomedicine fields: biologists, radiologists, pre-med students; others from majors in sociology, anthropology and philosophy. But all share one thing: a belief that the 4,000-year-old medicine offers great healing opportunities for our modern world.

Roberto Masferrer is no exception. Recently highlighted in The Oregonian for his volunteer service in the Peace Corps, Roberto chose to earn his Master of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (MAcOM) degree after working closely with indigenous communities in Peru. "I always knew I wanted to be a healer," says Roberto. "At first I thought that meant becoming an alopathic MD. My martial arts instructor introduced me to the idea of acupuncture and my time in the Peace Corps convinced me that acupuncture, rather than Western medicine, would be a much better fit for me and the communities

I hoped to serve."

Dr Gaeta and Sister Joeine

Chinese medicine and other forms of complementary care offer each of us, no matter our age, proactive invitations to age more gracefully while leading healthier, more balanced lives. Last month, Michael Gaeta, EdD, OCOM's president and gerontologist, presented at the 35th Annual OSU Gerontology Conference. "The secret to aging gracefully, says Dr. Gaeta, "is to die young at as old an age as possible." We can learn much from centenarians who, through their years of living in "Earth school," point the way to a healthier and longer life through lifestyle and "mindstyle" practices designed to help us maintain balance, promote health and prevent disease.
