Greetings!

Welcome to The OCOM Bulletin

Happy New Year! Like many of you, Oregon College of Oriental Medicine (OCOM) has embarked on the exciting journey of making meaningful resolutions for 2011. This year, one of my resolutions includes creating dynamic opportunities for you to learn more about OCOM, and for us to learn more about you.

Starting with this issue, The OCOM Bulletin will be e-mailed to you at the end of each month. It will appear much like what you see in this initial e-mail: A short-and-sweet handful of stories ranging from timely OCOM news, campus relocation updates and community partner highlights, as well as a monthly calendar of events.

If at any time you wish to opt-out of receiving this newsletter, please contact me directly or simply follow the "unsubscribe" link below. Or, if you know someone who would benefit from learning about OCOM and traditional Chinese medicine, please use the "forward email" link below to send them this newsletter.

In good health,

Gretchen Horton

OCOM Library
library user

Our expanding library services are a valuable resource both to the college and the community at large, though few people are aware that the OCOM Library is open to the public. The OCOM library website provides free access to streaming videos, online research tutorials, and student papers; for a $35 annual fee, local practitioners can apply for a library card, giving them access to interlibrary borrowing privileges through the Oregon Health Consortium's catalog.

Candise Branum, MLIS, recently stepped into the role of College Librarian. Nyssa Walsh joins her as Lead Library Assistant and Veronica Vichit-Vadakan has come aboard as Systems Librarian. This group is overseeing significant upgrades in library services in the form of two major initiatives:

First, as a result of last year's grant from the Library Services and Technology Act, OCOM has completed an update of its entire catalog and holdings to join the Consortium, allowing OCOM Library patrons to access and reserve materials from any of the partnered libraries (Oregon Health & Science University, National College of Natural Medicine and University of Western States).

The development of an online archive of videotaped Continuing Education lectures is another milestone for the Library. Ongoing additions to its growing collection include enlightening presentations such as An Integrated Approach for the Treatment of PTSD. An RSS feed makes the streaming videos available to the public at no charge.

Visit the OCOM Library website for additional information and library hours, or contact Candise Branum at 503-253-3443 x121.

New Dean of Clinical Education Announced

Martin Kidwell_2011

OCOM is pleased to announce the appointment of Martin Kidwell,  DAOM, LAc as the college's new Dean of Clinical Education. He will begin work in his new role at the start of Spring Quarter in April.

Dr. Kidwell has been affiliated with the college for several years, most recently as a full-time faculty member and clinic supervisor. In 2007, he was awarded a doctoral fellowship to pursue his studies at OCOM. Kidwell brings a wealth of clinical knowledge and teaching experience to this important role, and has been acknowledged for his superb professionalism, excellent judgment and highly collegial nature.

"I am very lucky," says Kidwell. "I have a great team of people to work with, and I'm excited to build on the historical strengths of OCOM, identify those places where we can do even better, and continue to deliver the quality education and exceptional patient care that makes OCOM one of the best Chinese medicine colleges in the country."
