Dear Friends,

I would like to start the New Year giving thanks for all the blessings we have enjoyed here at Freedom Farm. Thanks you for stepping up to make Freedom Farm a wonderful place to love horses, and to all like you who are working to co-exist with nature.

Thanks to Pam Cunningham for starting us out fresh this year with new Freedom Farm sweatshirts. And a special thanks to the little fairy who keeps the farm bathrooms stocked with TP and towels.

We are collecting pictures and starting a new Natural Balanced Rider photo album. If you have special pictures that you would like to display in the classroom please bring them by.

Our 2013 schedule will be done and posted on the web site soon, so you can plan your activities.

As we move into 2013, I would like to focus on how we are developing and make as much of my experience available to you as possible through a new section of the newsletter called Lesson Notes. Please take advantage of what you find there, because it may help you with what you are working on with your horse in the moment.

I wish you success and well being in all your endeavors!

Mary

Introducing New Riders

We want to introduce a couple of new folks you'll be seeing around the farm. Marilyn Crimmel and her husband Rick, have written a little bio below, and Mary Tulin and her husband Kip, whose bios we will include in the next newsletter. Both Marilyn and Mary are Adult horsewomen riding on Friday. They have been sharing Danny for lessons and think he is the greatest.

Both husbands share photography as a hobby and are capturing some amazing pictures of our horses and students, as you will see!

Rick & Marilyn Crimmel

Rick & Marilyn Crimmel
Hello everyone. My name is Rick Crimmel and my wife, Marilyn, is the equestrian. Marilyn has ridden most of her life. Her first horse was a Quarter Horse she got when she was fourteen. From there, her riding experience became more extensive. In Massachusetts, she rode and taught at a hunter jumper stable for several years, was a working dressage student of Karl Mikolka, and worked and rode with Bill and Susan Woods, currently in Florida. Marilyn and I met later in life. We moved around quite a bit because of job demands. Although Marilyn rode whenever we could locate an appropriate riding establishment, she hasn't ridden much in years.

Marilyn's daughter, Pam, is also an accomplished equestrian currently living in the San Francisco Bay area.

We first fell in love with Sequim while we were living in Scottsdale, Arizona. We vacationed here each year and became determined to live in Sequim one day. Through life's twists and turns, we finally made it to Sequim in 2010. We bought a lot and built our home that year. We have been landscaping our property ever since! It is amazing how things grow here. Since we moved here Marilyn has had the horse bug, especially during those wonderful 50-60 degree days. She kept doing searches on the internet for riding establishments and found Freedom Farm. It was probably six months later that we took a drive to see where it was and the rest is history. Marilyn loves riding with Mary. Mary's patience and knowledge is unparalleled.

I started in photography as a hobby dating back to the 60s while in the Air Force in Japan. My website contains quite a few shots I took during the 11 years we spent in the southwest. I love photography and now that we are retired I have enjoyed taking pictures of the incredible scenery and wildlife that abounds in this area. I never had much opportunity to capture horse photos but always dreamed of doing that someday. Needless to say, I now have that opportunity.

My website is at Rick Crimmel Photography, and upon getting there, simply click on Freedom Farm at the top of the page. Feel free to also browse my other work.

Thanks,
Rick Crimmel

 Rider Fitness Class

Rider Fitness Boot Camp-Mary, Colton, Jerry

The Rider Fitness Class (Boot Camp) helps riders balance their horses by working on their own balance off the horse. In only a few short weeks of working out, we have seen riders make significant changes in their riding that would normally take months, if not years. Dedicated riders come for a morning work out at 7 a.m. on Saturdays at Anytime Fitness, in Sequim (gym membership not required). Our coach is Exercise Physiologist and Personal Trainer, Kenny Hall. The routines he developed for the circuit focus on core stability, balance, and strength training specific to riders. Workouts last approximately 50 minutes, and whether you are a beginner or advanced rider, this program will help you achieve your riding goal. Cost is $40 for the month of February, if at least 10 riders sign up.

 Lesson Notes

Why are horses' legs long?

I know you know the answer to this, but I will spell it out anyway. To fly away from fear. Those long legs on your horse were meant to outrun predators. And linked to those legs are emotions, which are hard-wired in the horse's brain for survival. So, that being said, can we use that natural flight instinct to produce a more emotionally fit horse that can be more comfortable in the human environment?

Lets start by considering two attitudes:

  • Immediacy
  • Relaxation

Both exist in our horse's natural state. The combination of exercising these two emotions together can bring us to a new awareness in the emotional fitness of our horse. This means that if we concentrate on exercising these two emotions together--at the same time, in whatever time we are spending with our horse--we will be working on his emotional fitness. So when you see the opportunity of Immediacy arise go with it, and then also look for the opportunity to work Relaxation into the equation as well.

Conclusion:
While you are out working around the farm, watch the horses interact with each other. See if you can pick up on these two attitudes as each member of the herd positions him or herself around the feeder or during playtime in the pasture.

Wishing you the best in horsemanship,
Mary
