This is a great experience for young equestrians!

If you're looking for a fun birthday party idea, then try planning your party around a Mini Beats Ride & Charity Drive. The viewing room is large enough for parties and the horse games make a great activity for all the children attending. All proceeds benefit Peninsula Friends of Animal; please give what you can.

Introducing Sara de Jong
Many of you may have noticed Sara at the farm, or even met her already. Born in Curaçao, Sara - pictured here jumping Cherokee - has lived in many places, including Aruba, Miami, Texas, Arizona and Belgium.
Sara recently graduated from Verde Valley School in Sedona, Arizona and returned home to Belgium. Casting about for ideas of how to further her interest and education in all things equine, she learned about Freedom Farm. Sara's mother, Frederique, is working on becoming a Certified Barefoot Trimmer through Claudia Garner's program at Equine Soundness, and we can thank Claudia for suggesting that Sara stay with us for a few months.
Sara will be helping in whatever way she can (she was a great help during our busiest Farm Tour ever). An accomplished equestrian, Sara is doing groundwork and riding some of the horses, and is learning about trimming and other fascinating things from Mary, Jerry and Audrey. She also regularly joins us at the Rider Fitness Boot camp at Anytime Fitness on Saturday mornings.
If you haven't met Sara already, be sure to introduce yourself to her next time you're at the farm! |

Rider Fitness Class
The Rider Fitness Class (Boot Camp) helps riders balance their horses by working on their own balance off the horse. We have seen riders make significant changes in their riding that would normally take months if not years in just a couple of weeks. Dedicated riders come for a morning work out at 7 am on Saturdays at Anytime Fitness in Sequim. Our coach is Exercise Physiologist and Personal Trainer, Kenny Hall. The routines he developed for the circuit focus on core stability, balance, and strength training specific to riders. From beginner to advanced riders this program will help you achieve your riding goal.
Contact Mary if you are interested in joining us.

Hobbling Demonstration Report
It was very educational to watch Jessica Ware demonstrate how to hobble train a horse. She showed us how to prepare a horse to be hobbled by desensitizing the horse to a lariat rope around its feet and legs, how to get the horse to give each foot with the rope, and then how to put on the hobbles and support the horse as best you can as it first realizes its feet are confined.
Jessica also described the various hobbling options available to riders, depending on their goals for hobbling. One popular option is a three-way hobble, with a single hobble on the hind and a figure 8 hobble on the fronts, as shown in these photos:
