Cow Working and Hobbling Demonstration
Our next cow-working date is set for
Sunday, October 21
10 am - Noon 1 pm - 4 pm
We are excited to announce that horsewoman, Jessica Ware, will be joining us on this date, to demonstrate how to hobble train your horse. She will show us how to prepare a horse to be hobbled, how to first hobble a horse, and the various hobbling options available to riders, depending on their goals for hobbling. We will also have a chance to move some cows around, and Jessica will take that opportunity to talk about rider etiquette when a horse is hobbled in a cow pen, to keep horses, riders and cattle calm and safe.
This fun day is open to all riders and auditors. Space for participation may be limited, so please contact Mary as soon as possible to reserve your spot.

Rider Fitness Class
We are excited to announce that we have started a Rider Fitness Class, and the first session was a great success. Twelve riders showed up bright and early at 7 am on Saturday, Sept 29th at Anytime Fitness in Sequim. Our coach was Exercise Physiologist and Personal Trainer, Kenny Hall, who has been working with students from several barns in the Sequim area with great success. The focus of the workout was on core stability, balance, and strength training specific to riders. Our next class will be Saturday, October 13th, starting at 7 a.m. Cost is about $10 per person. Space is limited. Please contact Mary if you are interested in joining us.
Improving our horse's ability to carry us by improving our own fitness, and increased energy are just a few of the many benefits we can look forward to by participating in this class and exercising regularly. Here are a couple of photos just giving you a taste of a few things we will be doing at the farm to help riders build their strength, balance and confidence:

Trail Riding Adventures
written by Grace Lambert
Jess Crouch, Isolde Chae-Lawrence and I have recently had the opportunity to ride on some of the wonderful trails on the Olympic Peninsula. In mid-September, Jess, shown at right letting her horse Tucker get a drink, took me up to Mt Muller. The trail switchbacks up through forest for several miles, traverses on an exposed ridge, and then descends to sea level. The last three or so miles are flat with the trail winding through beautiful rainforest. The entire 13 mile ride was breath-takingly beautiful. Click here to see more photos.
Jess does a great job preparing the horses that she has in training, and she likes to take them out on the trails as soon as they are ready. In this way, they learn how to carefully place their feet to safely step over holes in the trail, and to bend their bodies as needed when walking through the narrow gaps as the trail passes between two trees. I was at ease on the Mt Muller ride with Jess as my guide, and I felt confident in my horse's ability to handle himself on the terrain.
Later in the month, Isolde and Jess, pictured above, accompanied backcountry horseman and master trail-maker, Tom Mix, on a spectacular ride in the Buckhorn Wilderness, called the Tubal Cain Mine Trail. Click here to see photos of their ride. |
