Leather Craft Project Days
Friday, July 13th
Friday, July 20th

These two craft days are for summer camp helpers and hoofbeats members. We will be doing more advanced crafts, using quality leather, stamping tools, dyes, stains, and beads, and we'll be making bracelets and a custom leather belt treat-bag. We will learn about the history of leatherwork, patterns, and stitch-work, as well as how to maintain, clean, and condition tack, boots, and leather goods with the help of Barton's Tack and Boot Repair. Each craft workshop will be about two hours long. Cost $25.

Joe Wolter 2
Upcoming Joe Wolter Clinic
August 3 - 5

We're excited to announce that we're hosting a cow-working clinic in August, with clinician Joe Wolter. Riders have the opportunity to learn key elements of working livestock, including positioning, timing, pressure points, control, and horsemanship. Joe says, "The ability to work stock is secondary to the team work required between rider and horse. Horsemanship allows the horse and rider to blend together into one mind and work as a team. Putting the horse and rider up against a free thinking animal like a cow challenges both to work together to manage the cow in a manner quiet and pleasing to all involved, including spectators, the livestock owner, and most importantly, the rider and their horse."

My Time at Horse Camp
by Flora Sullivan
Flora Sullivan and Comet

One of the things we got to do at horse camp was learn how to take care of the horses. We learned how to clean the horses hooves.  It was fun to pick the dirt out. There was a special tool that picked out the grass and dig in the hooves.  I also learned about the sensitive part of the hoof called the frog. The special tool that picked the grass out doesn't touch the frog.

We got to brush the mane and brush the tail of the horses.  We also would sponge them and get all the dirt out of the fur so they were not all dirty.

I really liked working with my helper Maggie. She was fun. When we would make the horse trot. That was fun. I liked doing that because it was bouncy. I also learned how to direct the horse, to turn them, to stop, and to go backwards.

We also got to do different crafts at horse camp.  We got to make a pouch to put the carrots in to feed the horses. I made a necklace for the horse. I also learned how to make horse cakes out of mush, carrots, flowers, clovers, and something else that was gooey, and we got to lick it. We put it all together and it makes a horse cake.

At the end of each day we got some super pretty horse cards.

I liked getting ready for the parade.  We sprayed the horses to clean them off. We got to put some flowers in the mane and the tail.

My favorite thing about horse camp was riding the horses. I love horse camp and want to do it more.

~ Flora Sullivan
