Joe Wolter 2
Upcoming Joe Wolter Clinic
August 3 - 5

We're excited to announce that we're hosting a cow-working clinic in August, with clinician Joe Wolter. Riders have the opportunity to learn key elements of working livestock, including positioning, timing, pressure points, control, and horsemanship. Joe says, "The ability to work stock is secondary to the team work required between rider and horse. Horsemanship allows the horse and rider to blend together into one mind and work as a team. Putting the horse and rider up against a free thinking animal like a cow challenges both to work together to manage the cow in a manner quiet and pleasing to all involved, including spectators, the livestock owner, and most importantly, the rider and their horse."

To find out more or to sign up, contact Mary.

Fitness Training for Riders

The Adult Horsemanship Workshop in late April focused on Fitness Training for Riders. Riders started in the classroom, learning different ways to strengthen their core muscles at home. Then the class moved into the arena and riders did more exercises that Mary designed to help strengthen their core. Mary also came up with several exercises that challenged rider's balance and involved rotating the upper body left or right while keeping the pelvis and lower body still and stable. These movements mimic what they need to be able to do when mounted. Then everyone worked with their horses and rode through various fun and challenging obstacles that Mary had set up. It was a full and very educational day.

As a reminder to those who attended the workshop, here is a description of just one of the safe, simple core exercise taught that day, that you can do at home. When done right, this exercise helps to strengthen the core muscles, and also keep the lower back flexible, which is so important for riding.

Pelvic Tilt

Pelvic tilt

  1.  side or crossed in front, as shown above.
  2. TigLie on your back with your knees bent and your feet flat on the floor, arms athten your glutes and abs, and then press your back to the floor as you roll your pelvis up, so that your tailbone just barely lifts off the floor. (To understand the pelvic rotation that you want to feel, imagine that you have a long tail and someone is standing above you, pulling your tail straight up between your thighs.)
Be sure to breathe out as you press your back to the floor.
  3. Relax to the starting position, and then arch your back slightly, as if someone were pushing a towel under your back (or pulling your tail the other direction) while keeping your butt on the floor.
Be sure to breathe in as you relax and arch your back up off the floor.
  4. Repeat steps 2 & 3 about 12-20x, being sure to tighten your glutes and abs and breathing rhythmically.
