Greetings! ,

Those mortality questions....keep them coming!

After completing the publication of our initial research on applicant laboratory tests in 2012, we have had a slight hiatus in publishing additional research results. Some of our attention has been directed to developing and implementing CRL Smart Score and CRL PLUS® automated underwriting solutions for several clients, but the rest has been focused on expanding the size of our research database to include a larger number of both tested individuals and deaths. Calculating reliable and usable mortality ratios for lab tests and physical measurements needs lots of applicants, deaths and test results. Our research has used a variety of datasets over the last 8 years that cover different periods of time in various ways and contain some test results but not others.

We have just assembled our largest and most comprehensive dataset ever, covering applicants tested from 1991 to 2007, followed up with a check of the Social Security Death Master File (SSDMF) for their vital status in September 2011. That date is key because, just after that, the state-reported deaths were retrospectively removed from the SSDMF without warning (leaving just federal-reported deaths).  This excluded many deaths for those under age 65.  It is not clear when and if this decision will change so this may be the last CRL data set capturing deaths we can create for a long time.

Our new data set contains almost 11 million applicants including over 350,000 deaths and a median follow-up of 9 years. It gains 28% more applicants and 42% more deaths as compared to our previous largest as well as inclusion of additional tests.  This includes an increase of 20% for applicant blood pressure and build.

With this research tool in hand, we look forward to a continued stream of client questions; now we can provide you with even more precise answers.

Smart Score™ Study Results

   What Did Smart Score Find?

Ernesto has no risk for cholesterol because his ratio is

OK, but has a small risk for this level of HbA1c at his age.

    What Did Smart Score Find?
Michael has a small risk for his chol/HDL ratio of 6.2 in
men of  this age, regardless of the cholesterol.  Smoking
risk is simply additive to lipids or HbA1c (and already
     priced into smoking classes.)

Overall, their relative risk is equal.  The risk for each would exclude them from preferred classes, but they would fall under a typical "standard class" range.  Chol/HDL and HbA1c risks are not black and white, but shades of gray, varying by value, age and sex, but not smoking status.
