The Word, Cat de Leon
Up You Go, Little Smoke -
'The Holy Hipness of Jack Kerouac'
Oct 10th - Nov 1st, 2014. Reception: Oct. 12, 7pm.
After celebrating Kerouac in poetry and spoken word for many years, 119 Gallery is excited to host a multi-media installation about the poet by Lynn artist Cat de Leon, opening October 10th. As part of Lowell Celebrates Kerouac! Festival weekend (October 9-13th), de Leon pays tribute to one of New England's finest writers with her show "Up You Go, Little Smoke - 'The Holy Hipness of Jack Kerouac.'" On display will be a number of large collages, several triptychs, art on window frames, charcoal portraits, aged photos mounted on metal, assemblages, and more.

Kerouac and his Beat cohorts left us their words, which still resonate with the artist, and his readers. After immersing themselves in de Leon's spiritual offering, encompassing painting, collage, sound and more, gallery visitors will have more than words to call to mind the next time Kerouac's name is evoked in Lowell. They will have the recall of a full sensory broadside, and perhaps feel a bit of the rapture of the artist and her subject. "Up You Go, Little Smoke" opens October 10th and runs through November 1st.

The reception takes place during LCK! Weekend, on Sunday October 12th at 7pm. During the reception, Kerouac's unique connection to the beat of jazz musicians, will be celebrated with a special performance by his friend, and collaborator David Amram.
